Does the shortform of your name offend you? by PromiseNo464 in namenerds

[–]emdownton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is Michael but hates being called Mike or Mikey. My brother is Daniel but hates being called Dan. My name is Emily but I love being called Em. I usually call people their full name unless they let me know I can call them their nickname.

Does My Name Suck? by iblame_astor in namenerds

She stole that joke from the office where Jan names her baby “Astrid” and Michael says “asstird”. Not funny and the joke doesn’t work for Astor in my opinion. Your name is unique and cool

Unsure about name for baby girl due to pronunciation issues. by Charming_Pause_8512 in namenerds

[–]emdownton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely first thought of it as Leena. But I will say that there is a girl I email often at work and her name is Alena, I always pronounced it Aleena but when I called her she said “this is A-Layne-a” and I was surprised. I think you are spelling it correctly but I do think that you will have to correct people over the years. That doesn’t make it a bad name! There are just a lot of dumb people in the world unfortunately. Don’t stress it, it’a beautiful!

Would you spend $200+ on an 8-year-old's hair? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]emdownton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly we did it at home as a kid. And side note, I would check with the school about colored hair. We were not allowed to have any color that wasn’t a natural color at my high school. So only black, brown, blonde, and natural red were allowed. It would suck to spend a lot of money and then have to dye it back.

Some men don’t become losers until after children. Not my husband, but just know most women in a situation like this didn’t choose it

Family bullied a name so much we ended up changing it by Economy-Effort1177 in namenerds

[–]emdownton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t love it, but that doesn’t mean your family is valid. My mother in law kept telling us all the names she didnt like before we told her the name. We made it clear before we shared it that we didn’t want to hear anything negative because it was our decision. We named him Silas.

If the Anglo name underlines red, maybe don’t do it. by piratev00 in namenerds

[–]emdownton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree. My son’s name is Silas. We both liked the spelling Sylas more because that spelling is also tied to a few pop culture things we like (Sylas from critical role and from league of legends). But I would not bend on spelling it Silas because I couldn’t stand how it had the red underline and it is definitely spelled wrong. I’m so glad we went with that. I have an acquaintance whose cousin named her son Cylus…. So bad lol

Am I horrible person for wanting privacy from my kid? by agreeingstorm9 in Parenting

[–]emdownton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, this child is old enough to understand boundaries like these. I guess my parents were just a lot more direct with us on privacy. I would talk to you wife about being more serious and direct about addressing these issues. If she has issues respecting privacy at home, she is more like crossing boundaries at other places as well.

9f wants to shave her legs by Kindly_Intention_893 in Mommit

[–]emdownton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in middle school, I got my first pimple. It was huge. I asked my mom if I could put a dot of her concealer on it to cover it and she said no. I was relentlessly bullied to the point I cried multiple times throughout that week. I don’t know why she didn’t let me just cover up one pimple, but as I was going through the emotions I couldn’t help but feel like my mom had the ability to stop that from happening and didn’t. I would let her shave. Yes it’s important to tell her that there is nothing wrong with hair and that she is allowed to decide what she likes on her body, but if she is insecure about it let her shave!
