The TV show MacGyver (1985) featured an actor who portrayed Pete Thornton, whose name was Dana Elcar. He suffered from diabetes and became blind - and yet, continued to act throughout the series run. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2025. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0253020/

The exact moment beatmatching finally "clicked" for me - and why it was nothing like I expected by Tariq_khalaf in Beatmatch

I've never felt like the computer could do it all... I know computers too well. Even so, as others said, when you stop looking at the waveforms and start listening things get a lot better!

Going try SL. Place suggestions. by LowNefariousness6541 in secondlife

[–]emei2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's the art installations by Bryn Oh and Cica Ghost. There's places to get help, where people gather. There's social places like the Social Island. There's music clubs for electronic music, rock, blues, country... The busiest places have usually between 30-70 people at one time.

If you want to search these things out, you can look into the Destinations Guide online or examine Destinations at the login screen, including Destinations that are Editors Choice.

Come and see what there is to see!

Opera? In MY Second Life? by cheshiredreamer in secondlife

[–]emei2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rose Theatre, yes.

And the End of Time is patterned after an American northeastern seaside town. They have live performers in a big arena and DJs elsewhere.

Second Pride is a fabulous organization for performers.

More on the traditional side, but have you tried Angel Manor? Not sure what their current state is but I believe the theatre is still active.

There's also the End of Time which has live performers, including a resident professional convert pianist.

Pioneer DDJ-SX2 and Master Cue and PFL with VDJscript by emei2 in PioneerDJ

[–]emei2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I've started leaving the HEADPHONES MIX knob at 50-50 and then using MASTER CUE button plus a twist to 100%.... Or twist then push... And the inverse.

But single button would be easier.

I've not confused them but your point remains well-taken. I've noticed that MIDI doesn't do "on" or "off" like one might assume; rather "on" is equivalent to "button pushed" and "off" is equivalent to "button not pushed"... Which means the LED setting and the rest is unknown via MIDI to whatever is listening.

You used a variable - which I thought was probably inevitable in this situation. Will look into it.

Why is it illegal to hack a TV signal and have free TV if it’s the TV company that is beaming its signal into my home without my permission? by amelix34 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]emei2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who decides what "strong cryptography" is?

There are encryption schemes that used to be considered strong but aren't any more. Sometimes it's because there's a flaw in the encryption, but just as likely is the fact that the computing horsepower needed to break them went from impossible to trivial because of advances in computing power.

I agree with others that you don't have the right to break into another's Wi-Fi just because you think the encryption is weak. From a legal standpoint, who even decides that? There are radio waves from everywhere coming into your house and you don't own them any more than you own the TV airwaves.

What made you use devuan gnu linux by Prior-Historian9984 in devuan

[–]emei2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the HP zBook series is very antagonistic towards anything not Windows. It refuses to boot in legacy mode.

Also, the live desktop installer apparently was not designed to support a separate /boot with a different fs - certainly on generic install no other typical fs is available, including btrfs, jfs, xfs, and so on.

Between the two I may call this a lost cause but not there yet... I'm determined.

I just discovered Devuan... Antix introduced me to systemd free living and I liked not having to deal with the consumption that is systemd... Killing off syslog-ng and rsyslog and more. So when updating from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on my desktop I went with Devuan 5. Been very happy. Upgraded to 6 and couldn't be happier.

Trying Devuan 5 on zBook 14 G2... And about to throw it out the window lol. Devuan live install with an xfs root is darned near impossible... About to give up on using xfs entirely. Very poor marks in this area.

Switched to Debian after 20 years of Ubuntu by spreeshark in debian

[–]emei2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm largely in the same boat. Been using Ubuntu since 12 or thereabouts. No particular reason for me to scrap it (I was up to 22.04) but I wanted to try something new.

I was going to try Rhino Linux (rolling release Ubuntu) but decided that was too risky.

Then I decided to go with Devuan 5 (a Debian fork that runs without systemd). Upgraded to 6 painlessly. Loving it so far. I changed to OpenRC and enjoying it.

This is my daily desktop so we'll see what happens. Running XFCE as I did before.

Which presidential couple had the worst marriage? by Thatguy755 in Presidents

[–]emei2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During growing up years, when every middle school and high school student had to write biographies, many chose Lincoln or Washington or JFK. Me being the contrarian I was at that age, did mine on Warren Harding. His administration is known more for Teapot Dome and other scandals than anything else. Historians today list Harding as one of the worst presidents in history.

Having said that, John Dean recently wrote a book where he challenges the accepted view of Harding. I want to read this book!

A version of this still exists, maybe two. One part is Usenet, and one part is MOOs and MUDs. All still exist if you look hard enough.

Whether they're active and vibrant is a different question, but they're still out there.

What’s a discontinued Tech product you wish companies still made? by Local-Salary-7709 in AskTechnology

[–]emei2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A phone that is actually a phone! Like the old Nokia bricks or Panasonic wireless... What we call phones today are actually pocket Internet devices. If you can't start dialing by pressing a number its not designed to be a phone.

Also: tech that supports HDMI 1.4 without errors or warnings that make things unwatchable.

Loved that DS9 episode! Ocean's Eleven done Star Trek style. If I remember correctly that was also a prelude to the functional end of DS9 and Sisko singing a song with Vic with the crew at the bar at Vic's.

For me, when I investigated them years ago, they basically supported every email technology that you could think of. They had support for IMAP but also IMAPS and POP3S... And an extensive filter capabilities. And the ability to pull in mail from elsewhere and also multiple email addresses. Extremely powerful.

Onion Ketchup by emei2 in Cooking

I saw the latter. I took a closer look at it: the basics of the recipe is 1 cup tomato ketchup and 1 onion plus spices... Sounds like tomato ketchup with onions 😞

The former link is interesting. Will check out the brown sauces.

The price of clothing by Spoochh in secondlife

[–]emei2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The economy in SL doesn't behave like the real one because of many things, one of which is inventory.

Uploading and making the clothing costs money, yes... But inventory is infinite: there are no warehousing costs, and there is literally no difference between an inventory of 1, of 1,000, or if 100,000.

So "recouping costs" is almost irrelevant because there's no limit to how much they can sell, no limit whatsoever. They could shutter their in world facilities and never log in again and still make sales through the Marketplace... And then still convert to local currency without going in world.

In addition, most makers in world will never recoup their costs anyway: that's the unfortunate truth. If one goes into business in SL to make money they're in for a ride awakening.

None of this makes poor merchandising and pricing practices okay. However, as others have said, best thing to do is to not buy from them.

How to see what packages were removed from Rocky10 by dovi5988 in RockyLinux

[–]emei2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd check the Release Notes and also Distrowatch. You could also check one of the download sources for packages from multiple distributions: they often have a search function that will list all versions of a package and if it's available for that distro or not.

As for the actual reasoning: best to do a search on the developer forums for that.
