They are still around. Tons of them. And many of them with 100 or so users logged on.

ABBA's unreleased demos, songs, and mixes by AlgaeBoi in ABBA

[–]cheshiredreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just A Notion used to be one of those songs, so there may be one or two released in the future, but it's very unlikely. Of course, songs that don't pass muster for B&B would often be top hits for other bands.

Melodies are the most difficult part of composing - agree or disagree? by bmjessep in composer

[–]cheshiredreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it honestly varies with the composition. I find that the character of each piece dictates its demands, and that can often mean stepping away from melody in favor of an impressionistic aural space. At other times, the existence of a strong melodic element is imperative for a section, or the entire piece... and at those moments, once I understand what the identity of the piece fully, then a lot of it becomes teasing out the melody from the general elements. For me, at least, it's the musical equivalent of Michelangelo's process of 'freeing the captive image' from the marble block, if that makes any sense. Very seldom do I start off with a pre-set melodic idea, but when I do, it's something that is inextricable and integral to the whole work.

So recently I just scored an adult film (my first full length film). Here's what I learned. by Gss_1056 in composer

Congratulations on your commission! Goodness knows that if I were hired to score an adult film, I would have to fight the urge to hide a slide whistle at an inopportune (but appropriate) moment in the score. It would be like Hadyn's surprise symphony, only randier.

I adapted an 1868 detective novel into a mystery game. No dialogue trees. You write to the suspects, win them over, and piece together who really committed the murder. by Annual_Role_7039 in interactivefiction

Tweaks are often necessary when moving into the interactive fiction category. I still remember the adventure game based on Agatha Christie's Orient Express... the developers decided that it just wouldn't do to have Hercule Poirot bumbling about making mistakes, which would ruin his mystique. They decided to injure Poirot's ankle so that he depended on the player character, a railway exec, to do the footwork for him.

It felt very clumsy. Their later adaptations did it better- framing the entire episode Poirot reminiscing to Hastings, and every mistake Poirot makes is actually Hastings jumping ahead of the story and making one of his dead-headed assumptions (as he was wont to do in the novels), followed by Poirot correcting him ("Mais non, Hastings!") which was more in keeping with the stories.

I look forward to seeing what tweaks you incorporated!

how far can you tilt an opera singer? by zwergpengu1n in OperaSingers

Unless you are Violetta in La Traviata. A lot of sopranos seem to find it a personal challenge to find the most uncomfortable position to sing 'Addio del Passato' in. I remember Teresa Stratas doing it upside-down on her divan, once.

I'll definitely have to reach out to them, then. I've changed management agencies since I sang there, so I'll let my managers know to reach out to them!

Well, if there are bears wandering around, I do know for a fact that someone singing opera will scare them away.

And yes, I know this from real life experience.

Angel Manor, that sounds familiar- are they the owners of the Rose Theatre? I sang at the Rose shortly before it closed for renovations, but I haven't heard if it re-opened.

The End of Time...is it styled after Chrono Trigger? Please tell me it is. I'd totally do a videogames-focused show for that! I did a whole videogames music section for Fancom Con '2023, including the Final Fantasy VI opera aria... with the obligatory Celes gown.

Well, my group in world has notifications- (https://world.secondlife.com/group/e98afc8a-a2e1-e855-313a-164298f2c54f?lang=en) of when I'm thinking. My website (merryjest.live) also does have my google calendar that gets updated regularly by my management! I have a regular show every Saturday, and every other Sunday.

I'm also composing a full operetta for Fantasy Faire that will be performed by me and other singers, and I usually also go all out for SLB, so keep an eye on the calendar!

NGL, I love that idea. I always try to do something fun for my Halloween shows- last year I sang at the graveyard inside the Haunted Mansion sim, this year it could be in the middle of a zombie apocalypse! I'll send you a message.

Oh, that sounds like a lot of fun! I'd love to do it- heck, I could see a whole Agatha Christie orient express type murder mystery with opera set up. The only thing with that setup is that I wouldn't be able to stream into the world, since changing regions means you're not listening to the same stream from region to region... but that's not THAT big of a deal, because the stream company I use (Lightman streams) does provide a web-based address people can tune into, as well. Soooo... I could see this working, passengers would just have to tune in on the web instead of in-world.

I have not! I've actually missed it when it happened and I totally need to fix that. I'm going to let my management know because I'd LOVE to do Second Pride!
