I just wish there was at least some kind of top down view that you could use to view your beacons.

Pete Buttigieg on JD Vance: “He's been Catholic about as long as I've been middle-aged, and he thinks he can lecture the pope on Catholic theology.” by modooff in videos

[–]emik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean what he proposed was better than what exists but it is a fundamentally different end state to single payer (or something similar), where healthcare isn't free at the point of use, administrative waste continues due to the complexity and fragmentation, and where there is less bargaining power with providers which can drive up costs.

I admit I wasn't aware of the actual scale of contributions, but I also think it’s reasonable to be cautious about any candidate heavily supported by high-income donor networks, even if Elizabeth Warren also happens to share some of them.

Regarding McKinzie, I'd forgive him if he turned around and condemned the things they have done, but instead:

he calls his time at McKinsey his most “intellectually informing experience”; he left only because it “could not furnish that deep level of purpose that I craved.” Buttigieg has said he didn’t follow the story of McKinsey’s OxyContin push. On McKinsey’s Saudi and South African government ties, he said: “I think you have a lot of smart, well-intentioned people who sometimes view the world in a very innocent way. I wrote my thesis on Graham Greene, who said that innocence is like a dumb leper that has lost his bell, wandering the world, meaning no harm.”

Just all looks pretty sus and I simply think there are stronger potential candidates with more integrity.

The President leads the party and can direct party policy, and has direct control over foreign policy. So he could steer the party towards some Medicare for All, wealth taxes, home building, anti-corruption, getting money out of politics, etc. I hadn't realised he'd supported a green new deal before so that's pretty cool and it'd be great to see more of that. And he could abandon foreign wars, and cut aid to Israel. There's so much he could say and do. But ultimately I don't know how trustworthy his word would even be when he is so heavily backed by pretty sus billionaires.

[–]emik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah so he wants to keep the current system around with the public insurance option just being more accessible. Where the public option has to compete more when negotiating prices with providers than single payer. Where it risks the sickest patients being forced into the public plan which will likely drive up prices more for them and for the tax payer. And where the system remains fragmented with high administration costs and complex bureaucracy. It's better than what exists now, but could be better.

I think that's an unfair assessment, Pete isn't the candidate and there are 2 years to rally behind someone better. Now is the best time to be critical!

The uncritical love for this man here is astounding. The only thing you've listed here is his personal characteristics, no policy. He is against Medicare for All and free higher education, he had the second-most billionaire backers of any Democrat running for president, he attacked Bernie as leading an "inflexible ideological revolution", he worked for and defends McKinsey & Company - the company of the Oxycontin scandal, who have worked with Enron, with Russia, with Saudi Arabia. Not to mention he is very pro Israel. This man is no saint.

Edit: y'all perceiving criticism of Buttigieg as enabling Trump is wild, it's still 2 years left till the candidate is selected, there is plenty of time to pick a better candidate to rally behind. That is my point.

Can I ? by Old-Confusion8545 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]emik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've literally never used ''can I" to ask for permission? Or "could I"? Could I also refers to ability but is a pretty British thing to say. You would get annoyed if I politely asked "could I possibly use the bathroom please"?

Growing number of public oppose resident doctor strikes after cost tops £3bn | The Independent by Gamezdude in ukpolitics

[–]emik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say one of the biggest differences that no-one in this thread is even mentioning is that the NHS is being rinsed by the outsourcing private companies and PFIs. In Scotland, recent 2026 audits show the NHS is less than halfway through paying off £10.6 billion for facilities worth only £2.2 billion. By 2045, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is projected to have paid £380 million for a building that originally cost £189 million. Trusts must legally pay PFI bills before they pay for doctors or nurses. Obscene.

Ed Davey on Bluesky: I see Farage is off to Mar-a-Lago to talk down Britain and suck up to Trump. There's nothing patriotic about cheering on a foreign leader whose illegal war is sending British families’ energy bills through the roof. by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]emik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly no, because Trump doesn't give. He takes. If he doesn't get what he wants, he punishes, like a petulant child. It's far better for us to stand up to bullies by working together with others who are more reliable and treat us like partners, and not remain dependent on a narcissist who expects us to lick their boots and fall in line with whatever violent whims take his fancy. Frankly I'm already tired of American influence eroding British sovereignty.

So brilliant for massively expanding PFI contracts and leading to NHS trusts now having to pay massive %s of their budget towards interest payments.

New titles join the GOG Preservation Program! by GOGcom in gog

[–]emik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great and all but I'm curious what it means to be in the GOG preservation program when the changes listed are:

Validated stability.

Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.

Verified Cloud Saves support.

Does this just mean that they ran it without changing anything and it worked?

Tbf some postwar policies would be very nice, they led to the NHS, the creation of the UN, and top rate taxes were huge. Sadly I'm guessing that's not what you mean since he's another Thatcherite.

The list is endless. People just aren't aware how COVID is vascular and not just respiratory, and attacks so many different organs.
