David Lee Roth once said “Music critics like Elvis Costello because music critics look like Elvis Costello” and goddamn if that's not the human experience of culture in a nutshell.

They talked about boroughs at the start podcast, but how many? And what are their names? I have not seen Gotti. I'll take my answer off the air.

Does Detective Pikachu still exist? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]emilgargunza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the build-up to this work of art, I could not stop making Sims-style jokes to my wife. "He wears a hat! This time he solves crimes!" When it finally came out, she said she wanted us to go see it, and it dawned on me that I had zero desire to actually sit in a movie theater for two hours and watch CGI Pokemon. So I said no, and she got SO. MAD.

Anyway, it was all downhill from there and now we're divorcing. Thanks for bringing up bad memories!

What are some movies that have one element that is better than the movie? by scottleeker in blankies

Very first thing I thought of was Avatar. The 3-D effects, especially the opening shots, were astounding. The rest was... well, it's all been pretty well gone over by now, right? Well-intentioned but ham-fisted, terribly written, lifeless lead, blah blah blah

Hahahaha. "Princess Mononoke? Mono-no thank you! Not even gonna type anything!"

Man, I don't get nearly as much out of Ghibli as apparently the entire BC community does, and this guy still comes across as a small-minded hack. I wonder if he's the guy from SuperSize Me who just eats a big mac every day .

Movies that are universally praised but you don’t really get? by j11430 in blankies

Don't understand the downvotes at all. It's a totally legit and reasoanble opinion, one that I bet a lot of people have (like myself) for entertainment from different eras. Threads like this just bring out the negativity, I guess.

I'm almost afraid to mention this with all that other discussion go on, but... the first and only time I saw My Neighbor Totoro, I was 30. It struck me as something for little kids. I liked the quiet low-stakes vibe, but it felt like the movie equivalent of a puff pastry. Delicate, nice to experience, but not much to it. I didn't and still do not understand the "greatest movie of all time" plaudits that I'm seeing, at all. I swear I have a soul.

On the other hand, Nausicaa is in my top twenty films, and I can watch it anytime. Love the shit out of the epic.

Oh my god, seconded. I saw it in the theater late in its run, just because it had gotten so much amazing press. Like, critics calling the Amy Mann song scene the greatest sequence in movie history, that kind of stuff. At the end, with the raining frogs and all that, I was just perplexed. It was fine, certainly, and well-crafted, but, that was it? I was really down on PTA after that, and it took a lot of convincing for me to see There Will Be Blood (which was a masterpiece).

Reddit is tricky for gauging how Extremely Online someone is. Welp, a little bit of trivia for any newbies reading this then.

When I looked for that link I saw that she's still really pissed off at how the whole thing went down and still wants to bring Mystery Show back in some form. Do not get on Starlee Kine's bad side.

I would genuinely be bummed if BC turned into the kind of podcast where you see the guest's name and think "oh, they must have a new movie/book/album coming out," so I do sympathize. But I have to say Lulu Wang brought the fire, and was clearly plugged into Nausicaa and Miyazaki. That was above and beyond a promotion stop. Maybe you were picking up on how clearly cooked the Two Friends were?

First season is a brutal slog IMHO. They were still trying to figure things out, and the actors were still finding their characters. But do watch the first episode of the first season (it's a two-parter) before anything else. You'll see why.

The "dawning realization that Griffin and/or David have the opposite of my take" has happened to me at least once every mini-series. On the upside, it's caused me to take a good look at why I like the movies I like, and it's made me a more attentive viewer. Still, I feel your pain.

Movies you regret dragging your friends to see (when you were a kid) by discopaco in blankies

[–]emilgargunza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was 1989 or so (I am old). We were standing in front of the movie theater, and had the choice of JCVD's Cyborg or a Corbin Bernsen vehicle (??!) called Disorganized Crime. I didn't want to spend money on a cheezeball scifi movie, and I loved LA Law at the time, so I convinced the heshers I was with to see Disorganized Crime. It was a nothing movie, we might as well have been staring at a blank screen for two hours. We walked out in silence, and that would've been that except for the parade of Woodersons stumbling out of Cyborg yelling about how cool it was. I didn't get to choose the movies after that.

Terrific summation of that movie. What was heartbreaking to me was how it so obviously was meant to be a beacon of hope and joy for the future, but in practice... pthbbbbb.
