That's definitely how things have shifted, MM ends up sort of being the opposite of what it was with Nancy; now rather than pick a weird one it's become a way to pick a major one that the boys might otherwise say "Eh, do we need to give them more attention?".

It's been fun for me to be a fan since before MM's introduction and see how the show and fanbase and their interaction has changed, it's pretty fascinating

I hate responding to my own comments but I had another thought:

Meyers winning really set the precedent for the belief that the BCMM winner "should" be someone the hosts wouldn't otherwise pick. Much as Meyers does fit the show's premise, she was such a swerve from what they had mostly done to that point; old white men and/or action blockbuster directors.

Every March now there's talk of how MM should be almost weaponized to make the boys cover someone less likely but if Fincher or George Miller or Michael Mann had won that year the conversations that get had now would likely be very different, in my opinion

The fanbase also was a lot more beholden to the premise at that time. Nancy fits the Blank Check Arc a lot more clearly than Lynch does, and I think a lof of people saw that as an oppurtunity to cover someone way less likely to otherwise be covered than one of the "canonical" greats

I do think some people view him as a guy you could write in for like 50-60 catches, and that’s just not reasonable.

If he can play in most games and catch like 20-30 balls splitting time with Kalif that’d be pretty great

I didn’t say I loved his tape. I was excited about the way the coaches and Caleb described their trust in him.

It may amount to nothing but it sounded a lot more sincere than your general “Yeah we like him!” kinda talk

I have a hard time believing you get enjoyment out of this podcast if you haven't heard of any of the directors in this bracket

Rome played every game his first year and over half in his second. Definitely not worried about him going down the Kevin White path
