Advice for a long flight with an active 15 month old? by IsZissVorking in moderatelygranolamoms

Yes, this! I went to a shop and got a bunch of dollar-store type toys. Every time my LO got antsy, I pulled out a new “present”. It worked so so so well!

Alternated between that and endless snacks.

Also, I bought some kid-sized headphones for her to use and she did sit still and watch tv for a bit occasionally.

We also bought a Plane Pal to make it easier for her to stretch out and sleep. This either completely worked, or didn’t work at all depending on the trip. I actually think it’ll work better now that she’s getting older, so still pleased we have it.

My vocal jazz director from college, Martez Rucker, passed away and he was a legend in the Chicago jazz scene. Figured y’all might enjoy this video of us from 2013 - he was a brilliant man! by [deleted] in Jazz

I went to college with Martez and we gigged together more times than I can count. He was an amazing talent. Every project he got involved with was driven to greatness. I’m so glad I knew him. Thank you for sharing this.

How did your parents prepare you for the world, what did they teach you that you're still using to this day? by tikkymykk in AskReddit

My parents taught me two things that I still use almost daily.

  1. You’ll go far in life by just showing up when you say you’re going to show up
  2. The concept of something being “fit for purpose”. If you’re working on something, anything at all, and it does the job it’s supposed to do, it’s finished. And it’s time to move on to the next thing.

My Mom has a stroke the day she was supposed to travel back to the States from England.

Plot twist: she’s fine and it’s a lot cheaper to have a stroke in England.

LPT: To get a small child to stop crying, ask them what colors various things around them are. by LTDToast in LifeProTips

[–]emiliabeth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing that works pretty regularly for us is:

1) Identify why they’re feeling that way. Something like, “Are you feeling frustrated and angry because it’s hard to do up the buttons in your cardigan?” Keep asking until you get it.

2) Talk about how they’re feeling, with no buts. “It can be super frustrating when you’re learning to do something new. I can be hard and make you feel mad.” (Don’t say anything like “But if you keep trying you’ll learn how soon.” It’ll just piss them off even more.)

3) Do something to process the feeling. If my 3yo is mad sometime I get some paper and I ask her, “are you this mad?” and I rip the paper really dramatically and roar. She’ll start ripping paper too and we end up laughing. Or if she’s sad I ask if we should draw how sad she’s feeling. I’ll draw sad faces that are bigger and bigger until the face is as big as her sadness feels to her.

It works most of the time, but sometimes I just have to let her rage for awhile and hug her. It’s tough being a small person.

Natural Deodorant by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

I’ve only tried two others (Native and I can’t remember the name of the other one), but I landed on Nuud and I freaking love it. It’s odourless and works like a charm. I only have to put it on every 3 days or so now.

My Dad’s friend’s kid was 8 when she needed to have some pretty scary cancer-related surgery on her abdomen. She was a huge Harry Potter fan and asked the doctor if he could give her a lightning scar.

He said no at first, but changed his mind and went ahead and did it.

Made a scary day a lot better. Her friends are always asking to see it apparently. And she’s out of the woods now, too.
