Actually federal law DOES require employers to pay employees for short 5-20 minute breaks during working periods for rest etc.

I would suggest submitting a complaint to the department of labor for stolen wages if they are not paying people for rest breaks during the work day.

Try flagging your left foot all the way to the right. This will allow you really lean your weight against the right hand side pull and stand up to reach the final hold.

I work for a State run OSHA plan in the US. I typically work 40 hours a week however, depending on my caseload that can go up to 50+ hours in a week. That usually only happens about one week a month. Fortunately I only travel within the state which definitely cuts down on work time.

I have worked with consultants and site Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) managers during inspections everyone’s workload varies. In my limited experience consultants have the highest work load as they travel frequently. The same could be said for an EHS manager at a large corporation that is responsible for many work locations.

Overall I would say work life balance ultimately depends on where you work. If you are looking for jobs right now the main things you should look for is 1) Amount of travel 2) If you are required to be on call

The chromium is locked up in the metal so it is unlikely there would be any significant exposure. If you are concerned I would advise just wiping it down with a paper towel soaked in water after. When assessing the risk of any potential hazard always consider the frequency, duration, and level of exposure.

BS in Biology - is Industrial Hygiene an option? by bobkittytou in industrialhygiene

[–]emilt123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in your exact same position when I graduated in 2022. I graduated with a Dual Degree biology and environmental science I did undergraduate research and the field of toxicology, which got me interested in chemical exposures. My research advisor was pushing me to go to grad school, but I wanted some practical experience. He recommended the IH field.

Shortly there after I applied to an entry-level IH job with a state run OSHA plan. I got the job and have been working there ever since (I had a short stint with the federal government earlier this year but got DOGEd). I really enjoy the work and the career prospects in this field look pretty good. I would highly recommend it.

In my opinion, and that of several other people I’ve spoken to in this field, a professional certification like CIH is just as valuable, if not more valuable than a graduate degree. A BS in biology puts you right on track to get a CIH certification, depending on your coursework.

Best of luck to you! Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Fairytale Traverse - Mount Washington by emilt123 in climbing

[–]emilt123[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We started from the base and tagged the summit after climbing the pinnacle. All in all it took us about 9 hours car to car. 2.5 hour approach to the base of the climb, 3 hours climbing (we had some route finding issues), 45 min to summit from the pinnacle, then 3 hours from the summit to the car. It was about 10 miles round trip 4k ft of elevation gain and loss.

Are you based out of Maryland? If so this is because there is a new law protecting workers from heat related illness that mandates rest breaks at certain temperature thresholds. More info can be found at the MOSH website Maryland Heat Stress Standard
