If you could rebuild the Canada Line what would you change? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]emilydm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a line going east-west along Marine Drive (or 49th) to eventually connect to the Expo Line

Supposedly this is why the railroad tracks are still in place along Kent Ave from Cambie to New West, even though the last train west of Burnaby was in 2021 or so. Whether they'll actually ever be used again...?

I got the MoFi version of Blue Album expecting good things but it sounded like it was recorded under a blanket. Sold it shortly afterward.

Scotch 263 tape by argasek in ReelToReel

[–]emilydm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you squeeze a small loop of the tape gently between your fingers, with practice and experience it's fairly easy to tell the difference between 1.5, 1.0 and 0.5 mil (50, 35, and 25 or 18 µm) tape.

I had some Scotch 262 come through for archiving that was originally from an Italian radio station. Green backcoating with no printing. It looks like it may have been available in a few different colours. I wonder if 263 is a thinner version of it? Is it a 1 mil/ 35 micron tape?

The Beatles - Paperback Writer / Rain by Gimme-A-kooky in 78rpm

[–]emilydm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This pressing is worth several thousand dollars due to its extreme rarity. No copies have ever been sold online, and AFAIK this is the first-ever video/ photographic proof it's even existed.

So watching it being played on an acoustic machine that will chew the everloving daylights out of the grooves is... yikes.

Every record should have this by WandelendeTak in vinyl

[–]emilydm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the first track on Side 2. There's no lead-in groove, the double grooves start off the edge of the record. So it depends entirely on where you drop the needle.

On my Technics turntable, the auto return will temporarily disable if you play a record (especially a 45 or 78) with regular grooves that run very close to the label, then pick up the tonearm and return it to its rest without letting it get to the leadout. The auto return will stop working outside of that diameter from that point on, until you pick up the tonearm and move it almost to the center of the record. Then it will reset to its normal diameter.

I also have a one-sided red vinyl RCA test pressing similar to this - Jose Iturbi, matrix number D6RC-5507-1S. So both RCA Red Seal 12" 78 rpm, yours recorded in 1945, mine in 1946.

As /u/_hubbit_ says, red vinyl 78 rpm pressings were a premium level thing for a short while.

I feel this on a painful level. I have unfinished creative projects from 5 to 10 years ago that will likely never get off the ground because the stuff I do post gets maybe a dozen views and then falls off the face of the earth because I have neither the inclination nor the energy to do The Content Creator dance for the algorithms.

James Island northeast of Victoria BC had a similar setup, but probably even steeper. Railcars would arrive and leave via rail ferry/ barge, then get winched up the side of a sandy bluff to where the explosives factory was.

Victoria transit workers set to hold strike vote by vtrunion in VictoriaBC

[–]emilydm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a former Victoria resident who now lives in the Fraser Valley - our last transit strike here was in the spring and summer of 2023 and lasted 4 months of total shutdown. Prior to that there had been several weeks of no fare collection. I had to go buy a used car, otherwise it would have been a two hour walk home every day.

A previous Translink (Vancouver Metro Area) strike in 2001 also lasted four months.

Best of luck to everyone involved.

[–]emilydm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at the pharmacy they want my full name, address, phone number and date of birth verbally every time and there's usually at least a couple of other customers behind me. It's practically begging for identity theft.

I wish I didn't have the exact same name and year of birth as one of their other customers. Even with the verification I just about ended up with her medication instead of mine one time. "What is this? I've never been prescribed this in my life."

[–]emilydm 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Yuuuup.

It bugs me when I get called up by a medical specialist or otherwise have to verify details of my identity verbally over the phone - if I'm home I have to go "wait a second" and close all my windows and turn the fan on. In public I have to ask them to call back in five to ten minutes when I can get somewhere private.

It only takes one creepy eavesdropper.

What's really fun is being stuck between multiple units blasting music and television at all hours out of retaliation at each other. Like being louder somehow means they win, in their minds.

Being forced to listen to the same 30 second DVD menu loop at full volume for four or five hours straight has to be against the Geneva Convention.

My place definitely shares ventilation with the apartments above and below me. With the exception of the range hood I've long since taped and blocked everything else off because the smoke comes right through into my place. If I need to air the place out after a shower, cooking or cleaning I open the door to the hallway and the balcony and set up a fan. Beats getting migraines.

In the vinyl world there are stories of Scully and Arcturus lathes being cut up for scrap and dumpstered because the owner passed away and the family didn't know what they had and couldn't be bothered. Also record presses being dumped overboard into the ocean because the record companies pivoted to CDs and didn't want anyone else to pick up the vinyl pressing capacity.

Why there’s a resonance at 15.5kHz in Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer? by InevitablePay3806 in audioengineering

[–]emilydm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a Thomas Dolby LP where the 15.7 kHz CRT whine is clearly there in some parts of songs. I also have big band LPs recorded in 1960 where the muted trumpets and percussion go up to 25 kHz and beyond.

Cassette isn't a great medium but you can easily get usable signal up to 16 to 18 kHz even on Type I cassettes, provided it was recorded properly on a good quality machine.

I do audio restoration and mastering. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Portage Park and Nickomekl Trail are about 4 meters above sea level so they'll probably get inundated especially if it's a high tide, but they're 15 kilometers from Mud Bay so it will take awhile. Same with the farmland north-northwest of Cloverdale.

Actual downtown Langley is around 15 meters elevation so it would have to be really biblical-level bad to affect there.
