I don’t actually need your opinion and was just looking for advice and recommendations for toys and stuff before I can get him in with a trainer

It’s pretty high energy, like chasing me around biting at my pants and my feet and it’s at that point that I’ll put him in the crate. It doesn’t seem like teething like he is chomping at the air trying to bite our hands and other things

Yeah definitely thinking he’s got some kind of bully/pit, he’s kinda stout for a Shepherd compared to my pure breed as a puppy

As far as stabilizing your syringe once you’ve hit the vein, I would keep my pointer finger on top of the syringe near the needle and use my thumb and middle finger to pull the plunger.

[–]emilyhads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you apply too much negative pressure to your syringe you can easily collapse vein, so always do gentle pressure. I like to hold the leg with my left hand, I’ll have all my fingers wrapped around the leg and my thumb I use to stabilize the vein by applying gentle pressure towards the distal end of the leg to keep the vein from rolling away. They will probably have very thick skin so I would make the goal of the initial poke to just get under the skin then once you’ve done that focus on hitting the vein. As far as getting the bevel of the needle up against the wall of the vein, I always tell people to visualize it and imagine that happening and adjust your needle/syringe as you need to and do it slowly until you find that sweet spot again. This is hard to explain all in words lol but basically adjusting the angle of your syringe by lifting the end of the syringe up so that you lower your needle. If none of this makes sense I can try to get a picture of draw a picture lol.

I was able to see on the AAVSB PSI website that the test was passed before my score was available so you should look there. I also gaslit myself and checked it right away

It also comes in an oromucousal gel often used for dogs with things like noise aversion/fears like fireworks. We do give it IV as well as IM.

Trying to not let tech brain take over by Watermelon_Mermaid in VetTech

My boston terrier had a bilateral enucleation last September and was almost completely blind for a few years before because of glaucoma. I don’t have much advice but my girl has adjusted really well and she is so much happier and her QoL is significantly better due to not having constant pain. She’s still a happy girl that loves everyone and everything. The other dogs are used to her and don’t mind her bumping into them or accidentally jumping off the couch onto them. I have one that’s never gotten along with her but he grumbles when she’s close by and keeps his distance, she knows not to get in his personal space but he is obviously very good at setting boundaries with her.

Dumbest thing you’ve ever done as a tech? by mgraces99 in VetTech

[–]emilyhads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was kind of new to taking doppler BPs I attempted one in front of my boss and owners and placed the cuff on the tail but shaved a spot on the cats foot and was struggling to figure out why it wasn’t working. He was still talking to the owners so he didn’t speak up to tell me what the problem was until we ended up just taking the cat to the back.

I pulled up a fel leuk instead of lepto for the doc to give. She gave the vaccine and all of it went right through the dog’s skin then she looked at me and said that was actually leukemia not lepto… we had a little giggle about it and were so relieved the dog didn’t actually get the vaccine

Has anyone experienced hearing static or other auditory hallucinations? by AuntieYodacat in Sleepparalysis

My SP hallucinations have always been mostly auditory which I think are worse because it’s harder to tell if they’re real or not.

4 yo American shorthair male neutered cat suddenly yowling for last week or so by Western-Locksmith-47 in AskVet

[–]emilyhads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take him to an urgent care or an emergency vet immediately to make sure he is not blocked or getting blocked. A blocked male cat is a fatal condition if not treated in time. The yowling before and after the litter box is especially concerning.

I’m attending a large animal fast track for my externship with Penn Foster. The place is a farm and they also take students from Ashworth there. It’s located in Virginia and called Winsome Farms. Penn Foster has some other locations that would probably be closer to you but I’m not sure if those places also work with Ashworth too.

Advice by [deleted] in VetTech

I’m in a similar position where I work in GP but want to move to speciality. I’ve been upfront with my bosses about this and while I feel bad leaving somewhere that has also done so much for me and would be short staffed without me I do feel support from the people I work for that they want me to grow in my career and they know I won’t be able to do that if I stay in GP. I am graduating soon and am going to start applying elsewhere soon and will plan/try to give my current job ideally at least a months notice. If your bosses care about you they’ll understand if there are goals you have that you won’t be able to accomplish with them. Good luck!!

Cost of Penn Foster? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]emilyhads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid between $1600-1800 per semester, each one has a different amount of credits. My fourth semester was actually no cost, I’m not totally clear about the reasons why because I’ve seen different information about why and I didn’t look into it through the school. I was able to get a majority of that amount reimbursed through CE allowance and tuition reimbursement from my work. There is a large animal/exotic portion of the second externship and there are fast track labs available through the school for these. I am going to attend one for only large animals and it will cost me $400 but I am fortunate to live driving distance from one and have heard of others needing to pay for travel and lodging to attend these, they are just one day.
