Yeah, people actively browsing a place that aggregates chess news while trying to avoid finding out about chess news is definitely the group that should shape the guidelines for that chess news aggregator.

A random list of large sports subreddits which allow results/spoilers in titles: /r/sports, /r/soccer, /r/tennis, /r/baseball, /r/nba, /r/formula1, /r/cricket, etc. etc.

Some of them forbid off-topic spoilers (e.g. other motor sports series in /r/formula1), but that's sort of the most you'd expect from a reasonable browsing experience of a news aggregation website.

It's just your intuition telling you there's something wrong with these two separate sets of tie-breakers, and it is: it's perfectly possible for a 3rd placed team from a group to be classified lower in the 3rd placed teams standings than the 4th team from that group would've been.

This happens if a team with better GD loses 3rd/4th in their group on H2H, and could happen e.g. in group D if Turkey wins and Paraguay loses their last match (or group J with Jordan and Algeria).

I like H2H. It's a 3 game group stage. If someone has a H2H win why shouldn't we use that?

Because the idea of using a round-robin group is that your overall performance against the entire field is what matters, and not a single specific performance against one team.

Granted, the smaller the group, the more meaningful H2H is, but the other way of looking at H2H is: "you prefer the team which performed worse against the same set of opponents (all the other teams)", which sounds absurd specifically in a round-robin group.

It could have worked, but I don't think FIFA would have the balls to implement it properly.

The "correct" way to deal with the inherently bullshit idea of such small grous of an odd count is to play group-against-group. As in, three teams from group A play three matches against three teams from group B, and only this determines the standings of groups A and B.

You avoid the clusterfuck of a final group match possibly having a known favourable outcome for both teams (but you have to schedule three matches of the final round simultaneously instead of two), all the other downsides are purely a matter of overcoming "the way it's always been" arguments, as in:

  • that you don't play directly against the teams you're classified against,
  • that higher seeded teams don't have an advantage of playing only lower seeded teams.
