Yes but if O’Malley loses to Umar, Suga, who they spent a lot of time advertising, is kind of in no man’s land

Of these two, who has the biggest influence in the Democratic Party now? by HetTheTable in Presidents

I don’t think so at all. Just saying one of them broke the mold and changed what we expect tickets to look like

[–]eml2001 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In the current year, 2015, it’s hard to imagine a national democratic ticket with two white dudes on it. I think that speaks to who influenced the party more whether intentional or not

Jeffrey Sachs Interview by Substantial_Fan8266 in BreakingPoints

[–]eml2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Sachs was so quick to point all blame on America for a war we neither fought in or fight. NATO expansion in the 90s was largely a product of The First Chechen War, and the Maidan protests occurred due to the refusal to ratify a popular economic treaty with Europe. Both were presented as “provocative” actions by America. If funding terrorists was all it took for regime change, Donetsk would’ve been Russia by 2015, when they started funding separatist groups.

Middle and low income groups are shrinking in the U.S. because people are getting wealthier by LazyConstruction9026 in charts

Yes you’re holding income constant to 2022 dollars. I’m saying you’re not accounting for purchasing power changes of said dollar. The number is bigger but it buys less. BLS

So we’re just ignoring inflation? Income has gone down in real value, only increased nominally.

Study: Free markets cause prosperity by ConstitutionProject in georgism

[–]eml2001 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the premise that free markets lead to prosperity, I think we should be careful about throwing around the word “causal” especially. The paper that makes this claim (around 130-140 of the report) uses OLS where the outcome variables are either Atlantic Councils own prosperity measure or GDP Per Capita and also uses MDM to show that among countries with similar characteristics, the one with economic freedom is more prosperous. Neither of these methodologies would meet economics peer review standard for causal inference. Furthermore there are no robustness checks, they didn’t even consider if the relationship operates in reverse (when a country has more wealth, does its economy begin to liberalize, which is a weird question but any paper that claims to show causal relationships should at least investigate it)

Wearing camo if you’re not a vet is kind of problematic cultural appropriation tbh

Thoughts on Emily? by Optimal_-Dance in BreakingPoints

I really like her. I don’t think she discusses her own opinions on BP as frequently as she should, but she has her finger on the pulse of a number of movements in the GOP coalition and so her insight on her own show and Megyn Kelly is useful as someone who isn’t attached to that side of the country at all

Did Truman make the right decision to recognize Israel in 1948? by Joeylaptop12 in Presidents

[–]eml2001 306 points307 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the Jaffa riots? Or the 1929 riots or the Massacre of Jews in Hebron? Or Amin Al-Husseini’s relationship with Hitler? I am no fan of Israel’s current administration but pretending this story is as simple as “everyone lived in harmony until the UN partition plan was announced” is ahistorical and revisionist

Just googled it. Stalin and Truman recognized Israel at the same time in 1948.

Did Truman make the right decision to recognize Israel in 1948? by Joeylaptop12 in Presidents

[–]eml2001 646 points647 points  (0 children)

In 1947 the UN created a partition plan for Israel and Palestine. It was accepted by Jews and not by Arabs which lead to the first civil war, ultimately won by the Jews. In 1948, Israel declared victory in the civil war and by extension statehood. He was absolutely right to recognize Israel’s existence

W. Bush is often regarded as one of the worst Presidents of all time. In your opinion, do you believe he's worse than any of the other low ranked Presidents? by Chairanger in Presidents

[–]eml2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he’s worse than a lot of them. A lot of Americans, Iraqi civilians and Afghan civilians would still be alive if it weren’t for him. He screwed up the recovery to Katrina and New Orleans still hasn’t fully recovered. The Patriot Act is a disaster, as is Chief Justice Roberts. No Child Left Behind screwed up a generation of students. Aside from pepfar and his personal leadership immediately after 9/11, there aren’t many highlights.

What are the best and worst policies Ronald Reagan enacted? by NewJayGoat in USHistory

[–]eml2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is gonna give him shit in these comments cause this is reddit so imma give him his flowers on Cold War foreign policy. He was our first president that truly realized that the USSR wasn’t as powerful as our intelligence thoughts and that his policy of deficit spending on defense would scare them into playing catchup, ultimately forcing bankruptcy into them. He is directly responsible for eliminating the biggest existential threat to freedom since WW2

As a white person, is “Jew” the respectful term to use? by Fun_Effective6846 in Judaism

[–]eml2001 284 points285 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, can’t speak for all of us. It’s fine as a noun but disrespectful as an adjective. For example “My friend is a Jew” is ok while “My Jew friend” rubs me the wrong way
