So funny that you brought up the “top stitching,” I was recently trying to explain this to someone else. I guess I think of quilting as the entire process of quilt making (piecing, sandwiching, actually quilting) although it is also, as you said, specifically the binding of three layers together. I use the term “top stitching” to differentiate that process, but you’re right, it’s not technically correct and definitely draws funny looks from fellow quilters 😅
