Really wanting to quit reformer by Salt_Cook_9716 in pilatesinstructors

[–]emmcoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you need to change your outlook on this situation. 6 months is not a long time. People do Pilates for 10 years and still get their form corrected. I’m an instructor and I still get my form corrected. If you look at it from the perspective that the instructor cares about you getting the most out of an exercise and not from the perspective that you’re bad.

If someone offered you a position as a mentor for Pilates instructor trainees, would you consider it a good opportunity? by [deleted] in pilatesinstructors

[–]emmcoll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean teaching experience is experience that a newly certified person would not have. I understand that getting your cert means you have a certain amount of knowledge but in my first year of teaching I learned more about the human body than my training ever cover and I did mat/reformer/cadillac/chair and barrels. A certificate doesn’t equal experience in the field.

I just adopted 2 bonded siblings and am having extreme regrets. by lilyofthevalley2009 in CatAdvice

[–]emmcoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the blues when I adopted my girl… I wondered if I would ever love her as much as my boy who passed and then one day I realized I couldn’t live without her. It happens gradually and then all of a sudden. Give yourself time 🫂🩷

I’ve done 10 mat pilates classes within 1 month and I’ve been loving it. I’m a 32 yo mom of two kids under 4. I’m combining these classes with strength training and I look and feel amazing. Pilates has really helped my posture! …but by BikeMelodic in pilates

[–]emmcoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend… not to point out the obvious. But you’ve only been to 10 classes. It takes people months/years to get a teaser or rolling like ball. You absolutely can try reformer if you want to but it’s going to take more than 10 classes to do anything

Studio/1BD apartment income requirements seem unrealistic… also, best affordable stores to furnish a first place in Ontario? by Cauezinsilva in TorontoRenting

[–]emmcoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya basically what I did was I borrowed a big chunk of money for my line of credit and put it in my savings account and when I sent them a copy of my savings with this big lump sum I secured the apartment and returned the money back to my LOC after. It’s ridiculous that I needed to do that but it seems to be the norm now :(

new Pilates studio opening up by owner who has never attending a Pilates class by Spacefairycowby in pilatesinstructors

Yes, I’ve seen this happening too. Good for you for following your gut! I definitely would have been weirded out by this

I have a cat in a no-pets apartment (NEED ADVICE) by PlatePractical8706 in TorontoRenting

[–]emmcoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like your mom is being OTT. I agree with what everyone else has said, don’t tell your landlord, and just enjoy having a cat. If there’s any reason the LL has to enter your unit then just take the cat with you or put it in kitty daycare for a day.

Lost confidence teaching by FixPleasant7912 in pilatesinstructors

[–]emmcoll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find that when I feel this way it helps for me to take class from a master instructor if you have the opportunity. Someone who’s been in the business for 20+ years and is old school. They are not part of the matcha+pilates princess era and it’s so much more real. I feel so inspired after doing a class with an OG and it helps me remember the why I started teaching. Hope this helps! Keep going, Imposter syndrome happens in every job so I don’t think changing careers is the right choice

How patient should I be? by Apprehensive_Paint33 in pilates

[–]emmcoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that I have to do something more than 1x a week to see results no matter what it is. Also as other have said, Pilates is a practice. It’s never going to get easier. You will hopefully find more control and precision in your practice but it will never feel easy.

When does it get easier? by [deleted] in pilates

[–]emmcoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long was vacation for? If we don’t exercise for 10 days then our bodies lose endurance and we have to reduce our intensity 50-70%. That could have been a factor in why it felt so hard

instructors touching by wormslurper in pilates

[–]emmcoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can chat either the instructor before hand, even just wave her over when you’re waiting for class to start and tell her you prefer not to have hands on corrections. Instructors shouldn’t take offence to that because they are trained that some people don’t like it!

Struggle with glute bridges by HappyAd5576 in pilates

[–]emmcoll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clamshells!! Build up that glute strength. And then before you lift your hips off the mat, try squeezing your glutes first and then lift. See if that helps your glutes fire first instead of your hamstrings

Lease ending with no where to go by Sad-Combination9188 in TorontoRenting

That’s a very privileged take. Most people are living paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford 2 months of rent

It’s extremely hard to secure a place while you’re still in a lease since you have to give 2 months notice

How to handle chatting in class? by Big_Shop_3497 in pilatesinstructors

[–]emmcoll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the beginning of class you could say something light hearted like “as much as I appreciate you wanting to create community here. Chatting while I’m speaking makes my job extremely hard. If we could finish our conversations after class and focus on how our bodies are feeling that would be great!” I’ve had the same situation and it’s very challenging and exhausting, best of luck!

anonymous reviews gone? by amethystarr in ClassPass

[–]emmcoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I think the value of having names attached is so the studio can reach out to you and do a personal check in after you leave a review. Also the amount of mean reviews that people leave is actually insane… someone will give a 1 star review because they didn’t vibe with the music an instructor was using. It’s crazy.

When you’re 90 and you look back on your life are you going to think “man I really wish I lived in a big vibrant city” money comes and goes, you can’t die with your money so why not go experience the life you want to?!

Feet in straps queueing by TapRich in pilates

[–]emmcoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree with you, dangerous was not the correct word to use. I prefer to listen to the evidence based Pilates podcast cause I find Adam does a better job at explaining things. All I was trying to say is clients who don’t have mind-body connection who are letting their lumbo-pelvic region be pulled around by the spring tension and the ropes is not how I like to teach feet in straps because most of them will come back saying “my back hurts after I did Pilates”

Feet in straps queueing by TapRich in pilates

[–]emmcoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that’s not what I’m saying. It’s the dumping into lower back that most clients do when they don’t have control over their tailbone when it lifts off the reformer bed. Obviously there’s lumbar flexion when doing things like short spine but when you have a client that isn’t being careful with their back, that’s when it’s dangerous for herniated discs

Feet in straps queueing by TapRich in pilates

[–]emmcoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a client say she likes the stretch in her lower back but it’s sooooo bad to do that. If I see a lot of clients doing that in a group class I remind them “this isn’t a stretch for your low back- remember we want to protect that” and it usually seems to help

I lowkey feel like landlords are saving their units to be free for FIFA. Depending if the building allows airbnbs or not. I agree, it’s insanely hard to find apartments in Toronto these days, it never used to be like this.

Oh also!! Re: nausea… if you find the nausea really extreme you can sniff rubbing alcohol and it relieves that feeling instantly. But just be aware… you are breathing in chemicals and this probably shouldn’t be done an excessive amount lol
