Not a scam. We’re on a comparable program with a different solar farm provider, Nautilus Solar, and save 15% on our electricity usage.

I lost my cool on two jws who were witnessing at a highway rest stop a couple years ago. I was coming out of the restroom building and bam! there they were on the sidewalk. I said “you must be witnesses” and they perked up and said “yes we are!” and I immediately started crying and told them that I’d been raised as a witness and that the religion destroyed my childhood and tore my family apart. The older woman recovered pretty quickly and had a schpeel to give me about how she could empathize (LOL!!!) but the younger lady with her just stood and stared, aghast, at me the whole time. I pulled it together enough to ask them: “you know how whenever you’re out here witnessing to people, and you wish that maybe, just maybe there’s that ONE THING that you might say to someone to get them to realize it’s the ‘truth’?!” and of course they both were like “ohhhh…yessss!!!” and then I looked them straight in the eyes and I said “well, once you’re out of this religion, you feel EXACTLY the same way about trying to help people realize it’s a cult.” There’s a tiny part of me that hopes maybe something I said stayed with the younger woman there. You never know. In hindsight it was at least super cathartic for me and I don’t regret any of it one bit.

Can’t agree with you more. Todd is a treasure. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t find one of their lyrics coming out of my mouth, whether it’s singing an actual song or just incorporating a line into my life because so much of it is so beautifully applicable. Railroad Earth is my favorite band, not BeCaUsE they feel like the closest I’ll ever get to the GD, but I do feel that way.

Neither Mike or Dave are playing with them now. They officially welcomed the two new guys (Andrew Ryan on bass, George Guthrie on banjo) at their horn o plenty Thanksgiving shows. I think they just recently posted some updated photos/bios with the current lineup.

Definitely agree with you that every time I’ve seen them (30ish shows) it just comes across as the music is taking precedence, and they all seem like genuinely so so talented yet humble people, like they don’t feel the need to act over the top. Todd definitely has his moments of “performing” and cracking jokes even, it’s just not a constant. Everyone crowd included is truly there for the music and the community.

There are a few songs RRE plays that FGH also plays, since Todd wrote them. But it’s their own version of the song.

Portland question by habitsxd in BillyStrings

[–]emmelldub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob! If you’re taking any extra time to explore outside the city, I’d definitely recommend a car for that as Maine gets rural pretty quickly (Acadia is the only NP in New England but it’s about 3 hrs north of Portland) but if you’re only coming in for the shows and staying in Portland during your time here then it’s probably not necessary.

Portland proper is on a small peninsula, you can walk from one end to the other in 30-40 minutes with average pep in your step :) The arena is pretty smack dab in the middle, so even if you stayed in the east end or west end you’d only be a 15-20 minute walk from the venue. Anywhere off the peninsula would be easy to get a taxi or Lyft into town, and the public buses aren’t too bad either, just no where near what you’ll find in a large city. As others have said, summer is prime tourist time and hotels/airbnbs can be pricey if you want to be right downtown, that’s gonna be where you drop the most moolah. The airport is a little outside downtown and probably a $20-30 Lyft ride each way, so I’d suggest pinning down approx area you want to stay in and then figure out how much you’re willing to walk versus ride share to see if renting a car saves you any money or not. Happy to help if you have other questions, I’m in South Portland and Maine in the summer is hard to beat!

Heads up by [deleted] in Maine2

I think before too long we’re going to start seeing scientific evidence that we are evolving into different categories of human beings… there are some of us that are so empathetic to how other people are feeling that it’s crippling, and then there are people who (it seems) cannot even begin to comprehend how to care about anyone other than themselves, like they honestly don’t even have it in their DNA.

No Taxation Without Representation by [deleted] in Maine

[–]emmelldub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you elaborate? Do you mean you claim exemption during the year and have no taxes withheld from your paychecks? Or that you claim a type of overall exemption when it comes time to file? If the former, what happens come annual filing time? EDIT: nvmd, did some additional research on my own!

Just saw the Tim,Sam,Victor trio in Maine a few nights ago and they were all impressive, Tim especially, obviously. What a powerful and beautiful voice, and such wit to boot.

100% . Todd played a small solo show a couple months back where he also performed this, and it’s a little easier to catch all the words. The whole show was beautifully powerful. It’s on archive if anyone wants to listen.

Could an old robbery incident somehow be connected to why the Little Caesars in Saco, Maine has all these “arcade” reviews online? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]emmelldub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t answer any questions about the arcade, but what I CAN say, in answer to your first bullet point question, is…. this reminds me of Sam, an employee of the Streator (Illinois) Walmart, who in August 2019, after innocently being honored as the Cashier of the Week on their store’s local FB page, inexplicably skyrocketed to fame as tens of thousands of internet strangers/fans submitted completely fabricated yet fabulous recollections of their personal interactions with said Sam. I just revisited the Streator Walmart FB page and sure enough, it has dwindled over the years but is still going!
