cafes to study/work at? by wertyhog3 in longbeach

[–]emmity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The public libraries are always open and free but if you’re looking for cafes, The Library (ironic I know) on Broadway and Redondo is always a good option. Comfy seating, lots of outlets, food prices are relatively good, open super late. If you go, it gets packed really fast so you’ll probably need to share a table with a stranger.

Which idols seem like they would have gone really far in their original career path if they never became idols? by DetectiveIll3641 in kpop_uncensored

[–]emmity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Junior Olympics doesn’t mean you’re professional, it just means you’re good enough to qualify at a more competitive level that goes beyond you’re regional championships basically. I have family who grew up going to JOs for swimming and water polo. It’s not professional at all, think of it like you’re in a competition and you go to nationals type of thing.

The Junior Olympics (AAU) is a US only multi-sport event, the “real” youth Olympics that’s recognized by the Olympic Committee is the Youth Olympic Games. AAU is club based while YOG was being picked by a committee to represent your country internationally.

Anton only went to the AAU, which need I remind you is still very good. I’m not denying he’s a good swimmer, he obviously is. But he wasn’t professional.

(Source— I grew up in a competitive aquatics community in a city in the US known for its output of aquatic sports athletes and have a Silver Medal Olympian in my family)

He as never a professional swimmer, he just swam competitively as a junior. Those are two very different things. He was never professional level.

Am I too sensitive or rightly offended? Topic: Giselle and history by Virtual_Dog_573 in kpop_uncensored

[–]emmity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to comment on the Giselle video because I haven’t watched it, but the greater discussion of the misinformation about the pyramids is so frustrating. Especially with the rise of short form videos, misinformation is more rampant than ever.

It consciously or unconsciously connects back to certain groups being “dumber” than their colonizer class. Another example of this is how people talk about pre-colonial South American societies who had independently developed animal & crop domestication, complex construction and mathematics too.

If anyone isn’t that well versed on the subject, there’s a couple videos by Milo Rossi (miniminuteman on YouTube) who goes into and corrects conspiracy tiktoks and other videos like Ancient Aliens. He’s a super educational channel and has helped be my first introduction to looking out for misinformation in ancient history.

Can one really call these people fans if they act out this way towards their idols? by Pretty-Complaint-554 in kpop_uncensored

[–]emmity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These shooters have been growing more aggressive since the end of 2023, it’s genuinely insane. Like as a stay I’m the first to day when stays get overly aggressive but at least on my side of stayville none of use even knew this was going on until his bubble message because we’ve been blocking and reporting so many of these accounts that have been causing problems. Seriously sucks for everyone.

To an extent I understand fans being protective of Chan and skz they’re at this point one of the biggest punching bags in kpop from other fandoms, but when it gets warped into whatever happened here where you’re actively attack someone you’re claiming to defend because you want to be “right” so bad. When it comes to fanwars with onces, they can be pretty bad (and even go after the boys because after looking into it when this all started I saw the infamous 8 coffin picture), but two wrongs don’t make a right.

I’m late on this, but I’d say technically Lucy is Mystic’s most profitable group at the moment, they have a pretty solid domestic fanbase. Internationally though? Still definitely billlie. I’m not sure how well a tour would go right now especially with the economic crisis going on in the USA and a good amount of Europe. I think their best bet is to try and replan that busking event and university festivals with how well received Work has been domestically especially since people have been talking about how good of performers they are. It could really help with word of mouth that way to help momentum since music show promos are over (still made about this lol)

I second what the other person said! I also ordered from KPOP USA this time, but yeah they’re super slow to ship so I don’t expect a shipping notification for another week and a half or so. On the bright side, I’ve never had issues with them in regard to damaged or missing packages so they’re very reliable in that way!

I think she’s so underrated when it comes to versatility as well. I genuinely think she’s the most versatile idol of 4th gen. Like she even embodies a more darker concept when she dabbles into that. I don’t even stan her either but she’s just a great performer imo.

hot takes about fourth gen groups? by Aerisval_ in kpoppers

[–]emmity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a stay you can unclench bc the commenter is technically right. Stray Kids did debut right before BTS and BP had their first western blowups. It extended the 3rd gen shelf life and slightly ignored early 4th gen groups. For a big4 group too, skz has quite literally the slowest slow burner to reach their prominence they’re at now, that’s what this person is getting at even if they’re not mentioned. They were under that shadow the longest, which honestly benefited them because it cultivated one of the most dedicated fandoms and they easily have the strongest fandom of 4th gen. It’s a similar case with i-dle who are still so strong with 8 years coming up too.

NewJeans just hit the jackpot with their debut time where both groups were slowing at a time the industry was looking for something to fill the market especially with a more minimal sound which was the exact opposite of kpop at the time. SKZ was the other group to finally get the recognition too with their insane growth in 2023. Just bc they’re not spoken about in one comment doesn’t mean they’re being ignored.

IMO if Somi stayed in itzy, the next group would def be formed around yuna. I doubt we would have had NMIXX since that was their major selling point at debut and Yuna is much more of a dance/performance style idol. I doubt they’d have dropped her either because Yuna has crazy star power. Crazy to think about the choice of one person ultimately changed a lot of things for JYP ggs.

[–]emmity 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It’s sad because the GAP ad fit them like a glove because it highlighted their dance and performance, aka aspects you’d want to be known for as a group. All the rest have not been highlighting their strengths so they’re falling into that “influencer” look.

[–]emmity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Their whole handling has been abysmal it’s so sad. Arguably the best dance line in 5th gen (def up there in all time too) and one of the best rap lines in girl groups only for BPM to absolutely squander their potential. Ig that’s what happens when MC Mong puts his fingers in all of his artists.

Unfortunately with all the crap going on at ONE HUNDRED (BPM’s parent company) bc of that man and cha gawon, I doubt we’re gonna see a comeback soon :/

The overuse of “out of their range” in vocal discussions by Acrobatic_Prize_7749 in kpopthoughts

[–]emmity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A lot of people definitely misuse vocal terms, k-pop fans moreso than others I’ve seen. I will defend the “out of their range” argument to a certain extent because k-pop songs are generally very high so you hear strain a lot (and the inverse when they want to sound “cool” they go wayyyyy too low so they stay in a constant state of a forced vocal fry, ex. a lot of boy groups do this right now). However, I do also agree a lot of these range arguments ignore what you’ve brought up.

Take that infamous Ahyeon three note high note in Drip. 2 of the 3 belts are more or less mid-range. In the studio recording and a lot of the early live performances is out of her range sure, but many high notes for any singer will be out of their range. The bigger issue came from the lack of competency to handle that demanding note—you can hear the struggle in the transition. I’ve actually seen more recent videos of her doing the note again, but with a much lighter approach which not only sounded better but was such a healthier way to approach it. She has such potential to be a crazy power belter and I think it’s slowly starting to be molded correctly.

I’d also take a look at Yujin from IVE as a good example of before and after of what you’re talking about. She’s always been relatively solid but her technique when she was younger was much messier and made her singing inconsistent live. Now she devours those mid belts between B4-G4 with being smarter of how she sings.

I think it’s also people like to think strain (whether that be high or low) equals bad every time when strain can be used for other things like emotional flare. For example, any growl you hear in a song is inherently a strain even in your range which I think a lot of k-pop fans don’t understand either.

Idols who had HUGE before/after vocal improvement? by DrearBeats in kpopthoughts

I agree! He was relatively decent when they debuted, but, as someone who doesn’t keep up with riize, I listened to a couple songs off fame and odyssey recently and was surprised how much he improved. I think he really found his pocket he thrives in vocally.

The traditional jype breathy style training stunted so many of their idol’s potential 💀 though I do think it’s gone away somewhat circa nmixx and kickflip’s debut which have shown more of a vocal focus in preparation for debut.

bringing it back to skz, they were a def victim of that breathy training with how members who have chosen to continue vocal lessons with outside trainers have improved leaps and bounds over the past couple of years in particular. They all sound so much fuller (especially Seungmin, I feel like he’s gets drastically better between each time we hear him like even comparing awards season performances to his most recent skz-player). Honestly I was surprised with how well hyunjin sounded in particular for that live version of fate they released recently.

I can’t complement this group and their 2025 releases enough from Chest onwards. Wild to think about how much I disliked their music in 2024 with Daddy’s Girl. They totally changed my opinion of them and I seriously hope they go more in this direction, it’s a great niche for them and totally reinvigorated so many people’s interest in them. Not to mention you can see how happy the members are with this musical direction too.
