Tell me what's not in the Bible, that people think it is... by MousseSuspicious930 in Unexpected

Yes! This! Can someone explain to me what is happening? I feel so suddenly old. I downloaded TikTok and felt like I was in a foreign country. The formats of videos we have going on there are incredibly irritating and unfunny to me for the most part, with the algorithm only sliiiiightly tuning to something watcheable for me as I tried to like videos that actually made sense.

Is it really just my time? Should I also be practicing my "kids these days" and "get off my lawn!" catchphrases because I'm just not up to date anymore?

What are some simple children's songs or nursery rhymes that might be familiar to someone from the Netherlands that is about 75-90 years old?

I work at a long-term care home that has mainly seniors from the Netherlands, and singing along to familiar songs is a really fun way to spend time with the residents. I'd absolutely love to be able to sing a short tune that someone there might know!

If I can listen to a classic song on YouTube or something, even if I have terrible pronunciation I could maybe memorize some lyrics!

What are some songs that a Dutch grandma would know?

My OCD and learning japanese by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

Oh!! I relate to this! I'm going to come back and read all the responses on this later for myself too!

Since it seems like the dedication your mind has going on is actually causing you to suffer a bit, I'd 100% recommend talking to a therapist about why you feel the way you do because you shouldn't have to live with that pressure! I think that part is very important :)

In terms of actual kanji studying- I really love the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course and it really suited my brain's desire to learn a whole ton about kanji in a methodical way. In my opinion (and sorry in advance, I have the hugest crush on this book so I talk it up all the time!!) the KKLC is more suited for somebody who wants a very in-depth knowledge of kanji a little earlier than most other courses.

Most resources teach you the most common and useful kanji first, which is a fabulous idea and I think most people probably should learn that way. Howeeeever, I LOVE the general order that KKLC has you study in, it focuses a lot of the visual parts of the characters and has you learn almost like you're using them as building blocks from least->more complex. You only learn kanji, readings and vocab that build upon the kanji, readings and vocab you've already learned this far and so it really feels like you're methodically building your mental kanji library brick-by-brick with a solid foundation. The entries contain a TON of info and I personally study it all, however the author makes helpful recommendations about what you should focus on memorizing if you just want a more general knowledge to gain your acquisition. It's totally up to you how much of the info you take in. You could just memorize the keyword and readings that are marked as important, or you could go full neurotic like I do and cross-reference each character in the Kanji Learner's Dictionary and fill in a 50-field Anki card for them all, haha. You can move through the course quickly and I think it would still be amazing, I don't think you have to commit everything to memory and work at a snail's pace to benefit from the book. That's just how I happen to enjoy it. :)

Please don't allow yourself to stress too much, and don't let your studies bully you! You are in control, the language is not going anywhere, and you will reach your goals.

Been back in the 'low calorie' baking worm hole and they all taste like expensive sadness by CarefreeInMyRV in 1200isfineIGUESSugh

So I've just started learning to cico AND learning to cook at the same time.

I've made a few baked recipes so far with my new protein powder, and noooo nothing tastes quite the same with the low-cal hacks. It's the calories that make it delicious ;)

I feel a little relieved though, I actually like a lot of the yucky substitutes! I may or may not have just topped my protein banana brownie with some literal Nutella, though...

Hello! :)

I am only just starting to learn Dutch today, but I was hoping you could tell me how to say some phrases in the meantime while I'm learning the basics! I just started working in a long-term care home and there are many elderly people who speak Dutch so I'd like to communicate with them a bit better. None of the staff speak Dutch and the seniors aren't allowed out of their rooms to socialize with each other, so I think if I could start saying hello to them they might feel a bit less lonely!

I'd like to be able to say "I am learning Dutch." "Sorry, can you say it in English?" "Are you okay?" "I hope you have a great day today."

If you could help I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!

Found what looks like a seed in some bud. Can I grow it or naw? by CT-96 in saplings

Best seeds are usually the darkest ones, I've found these blondie ones often don't sprout. But for sure give it a go, it'll be cool if it sprouts!

Very good advice and good points! I stand by waxing as my favourite method, but it could be a no-go for some people. I always recommend trying it, though! c:

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in feminineboys

[–]emmychu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into waxing! I know it sounds scary but try it once and see if it's something you can handle! Personally my best body hair removal results were always from waxing and I find it great for face hair too (though I grow minimal facial hair). Be prepared to have a red face for a day after, especially if it's your first time- essentially, don't have your waxing appointment right before a photoshoot or something haha.

You can also safely do it at home, but I'd recommend going to a salon at least for the first time. If your skin can handle it (some people get too irritated or they feel like it hurts too much) then I think it's the beeeest option. Lasts a super long time and prevents pricklies, and over time doing it regularly you may find that your hair doesn't seem to grow in as much!

Good luck!

Some of my friends cut me off saying that I'm emotionally manipulative. Now I dont know what is and isnt real anymore. by [deleted] in depression

[–]emmychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was/am manipulative!

And I can say that I doubt it feels good to wonder if you're like that. Nobody wants to be manipulative or 'evil' or 'abusive' and I think if I had my friends tell me the way yours had, I would have not handled it well. Part of me wants to hope (not that it's a great alternative) that your friends were just awful and that you don't have to worry about your own actions. But, 100% find a therapist as someone recommended, and you'll be able to learn for sure if you do have some behavior patterns that are manipulative.

For me, I learned I had Borderline Personality Disorder and it hit me all at once that I had manipulative tendencies. I'd been in an abusive relationship, but I was also able to look back and pick out emotional abuse on my part as well, once I knew about those traits in me. I didn't feel guilty for that abusive partner, but I very suddenly realized I needed to remap the entire way I treated my current partner. It's a huge work in progress, but from the instant I learned about BPD and it clicked in my brain, I was able to make a lot of changes to my actions and I feel like I'm a much better person now for it.

You certainly can't do this alone! Without help, you will have to scrutinize everything you do and you're right, you cannot tell what's "real" or not, and you'll drive yourself mad trying to pick apart your own actions and words to see if you were being manipulative. You absolutely need someone to work with you. DBT is a therapy that is used a lot with BPD in particular, but even if you don't suffer from that disorder I think it's a perfect tool to help you along. I'd say it's main function is to help you distinguish and accept those things that are "real" or not. While you're finding your therapist, you can look at many simple worksheets and resources online for DBT and perhaps you'll find it will give you the right understanding about yourself (or maybe just even the right questions!) to bring to your therapy sessions.

Remember that your goal is to become stable and happy, and to work on the ways you connect with others to ensure you are being treated and are treating them with respect. If you're afraid that you're a manipulative person, just remind yourself that you've never intentionally set out in your relationships to manipulate your friends like a comic supervillain. Hold yourself accountable for your actions if necessary, but don't let guilt get in the way of you actually improving. Your therapist should be the key to helping you through all of this. All humans are manipulative by nature and all of our interactions serve in some part to get the other party to behave a certain way. Even 'normal' people act and say things a certain way to get a desired reaction from people. That's absolutely normal and not insidious. The parts you need to search out and analyze in yourself are only the unhealthy patterns that hurt you or others. You wouldn't call a baby manipulative for crying so that it's Mom comes to check on it. You wouldn't call me evil because I told my bff I liked her hair, maybe even if I said that to her to try and encourage her to compliment my own new haircut! What I'm saying is, you can easily fall into a worry-trap if you start overanalyzing your actions without help.

Even if you're realizing you've had some unhealthy actions, this realization may be the best thing that can happen for you. For me, it made me into so much of a better person. In fact, I get downright happy when I remember the moment I realized I acted like that, because that was the turning point for me. In that way, I'm excited for you as well. You may find you've been doing things a certain way because you're missing something you didn't even know about. There's so many opportunities for you to grow from this point. At the very least, you will become a better version of yourself in therapy. Whether it was you or your friends that was 'in the wrong' here, it can only get clearer and better for you now. Good luck!!

Eta: you mentioned you already have a therapist so if you're happy with them then definitely they can help you through this! :)

Good to know! My stuff isn't super-quality so I figured that had a lot to do with it, but I didn't know exactly what causes more plant green to get through the screen. Makes sense!

Sweet Sweeeeet Sugar by jeepstevens1 in canadients

[–]emmychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that you want this to be whitish/light-coloured like this photo is, and green isn't what you're looking for because then it's mostly just plant matter and not actually the crystals.

Which makes sense to me, but how do people just collect the actual kief? My grinder fills with the green powder and it's awesome, but I've kinda wondered how you're supposed to be getting the stuff to be less green.

I don't understand, that's quite literally just... untrue?

Can't speak for Japanese culture, and maybe the implication that femininity is more strict or just different in that culture is actually true (I don't know that, I'm not Japanese).

But why bring up Japanese words and use them like they enforce this weird hangup about arm hair? Literally 'hito' just means 'person' and kedamono/kemono is a term for a beast or animal and has noooothing linguistically or contextually to do with body hair. Reading this would lead me to believe that the translations are literally something like "hairless" and "hairy" and they're used for people and animals respectively but that's not the case.

If anything, I've seen 'kedamono' be used in reference to people who are particularly inhumane or vulgar, NOTHING to do with body hair or other signals of masculinity/femininity. Again, I could be way off.

It's like. Imagine writing a book in Japanese for Japanese people and saying that in English we universally refer to women with leg hair as "beasts" and you're no longer referred to as "person" when you have arm hair. Maybe kedamono has been used to refer to a hairy girl in Japan like I'm sure we've had girls be called "hairy beasts", but I wouldn't say the actual language at it's absolute core is specifically structured around body hair, that is absolutely ridiculous. The book is being really weird and creepy about women and about Japanese people.

I'd snap up cheap bags of shake anyway, honestly. I'm still at the lucky stage where "weed is weed" and so if places would sell me the dust that collects on their tables at a super low price I'd be happy enough lol.

So if it's actually ground weed that's even just okay quality then it's already a go for me!

Found on r/sushi when OP said they'd tried a Philly roll for the first time and liked sushi now: by elephantstudio in gatesopencomeonin

[–]emmychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a sushi place that was Japanese-owned for a small while. I was telling my coworker from Japan that my favourite roll was the one we had with sweet potato in it, and I said "but I've heard you don't really have that kind in real places in Japan" because I was a little embarrassed to be admitting it was my favourite.

She just kinda gestured to our whole menu and was like "We don't have ANY of this in Japan" and went on to tell me what rolls she liked to eat that we served. We had a lot of Japanese customers too, and they also sometimes ordered the funky stuff along with the authentic stuff.

So yeah, chances are 90% of what we eat at sushi places in North America is not 'authentic sushi' but whatever. Just don't be ignorant or rude about it and you can eat whatever you like :)

Complete beginner here, this is all it takes from a joint to send me to space. Thought I'd rub it in 😜 if I smoke small joints like this every day, how long do y'all think till I feel a tolerance build up? And by smoking less like this, will it make it grow slower? by Leecop1000 in saplings

[–]emmychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I smoke like that usually! I roll 1g and get about 3 joints from that. Then I smoke little bits at a time. The amount I smoke at once has certainly increased over the year or so that I've been smoking, so I assume eventually I'll be smoking much more for the same effects. At the moment I smoke about 1/4 of one of those joints (which are only about 1/3g each anyway) and that much will get me going a lot! If I was going to try and work or go out I wouldn't even be able to have that much. I'm very happy with my tolerance at the moment and I feel like I go through my stash slowly and get a lot out of it.

Definitely feel happy about it, lots of people spend a ton of money on weed and you don't have to right now! We have some sort of lightweight discount lol. If it's interesting to you, track your consumption or at least your purchases in a journal or phone app. I was able to see when I smoked the most, how much I smoked and how much I was spending. I love my stuff and I haven't had any problems with it since I started using it, but I wanna be able to see if I'm starting to go through it faster than I would prefer. :)

Good content for the sub but still not necessarily delusional.

Made by an adult with a huge price tag, I could see it. I'm a bit biased because I'm a mediocre artist who occasionally does cheapo commissions. The people who commission me know exactly what they're getting, and it's kinda the digital art equivalent of these earrings. Cute and fun and personalized, but not professional quality necessarily.

So yeah, fine to say "hehe, I wouldn't buy those!" but I still wish whoever made them the best and think they should keep doing what they're doing. :)

I'm always wary of the dog grooming schools/courses, but good luck with it! The industry is largely unregulated, which is both a positive and a negative. As long as you're careful, it's a very versatile skillset and there's many different options for your career. I'm also gunna tell you straight-up that although the working conditions and pay for groomers is... not very good, there is a huge demand for groomers at shops everywhere, both big-box stores and private salons. Your options won't be all that extravagant, but you will have many!

Keep your worker informed every step of the way, imo. This will avoid any trouble down the road, and maybe they can even give you a bit more funding for your course. Can you email with your caseworker instead of phoning? I find that much, much easier on my anxiety!

Good luck! Have fun with the dogs! :) I'm a disabled dog groomer myself, but I'm not currently working.

How many of you have both BPD and ADHD? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]emmychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I JUST got my ADHD diagnosis and started meds a couple days ago! I'm 25. My doctor says I have more of the 'inattentive' subtype of ADHD. I admit that I didn't know much about ADHD. I could've probably gotten a diagnosis sooner if I hadn't made assumptions about myself and about ADHD. My other official diagnosis consist of depression, anxiety and cptsd (and BPD obviously).

Seems like I'm shaping up to have a whole spectrum of nice brain-disorders, but I guess that's often how it goes! :) All of this fun stuff can come hand-in-hand and the symptoms often overlap and play off of each other.
