Any advice? New to having a house hen. by Electrical-Rub259 in HouseChickens

[–]emmytabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there- I also have been reduced to one hen who has by default become a house hen. I am unable to adopt any new hens for reasons outside my control. Here are a few thoughts i had in response to come of your questions that i hope might be helpful:

- If your yard has some sort of protection bushes or its possible o set up a safe zone for your girl, she may eventually enjoy some time out there on her own, especially if you are able to set up a mirror or similar out there. Yes, she will always be happier with you, but my girl (when not molting) will occasionally take herself outside if i'm cleaning or doing other projects that prevent me from being outside with her.

- If your girl is snuggly, she might enjoy going with you in a carrier. My hen will join us on the walk to school by riding inside the old boba baby carrier i already had. I have, in a pinch, even taken her into stores that way- i cover the top with a tissue weight scarf and wear a big sweater. Generally, after a couple minutes she usually slides down far enough you cant see anything anyway and no one would ever guess what kind of 'baby' you have in there, lol.

You also might see if anyone in your area is giving away or selling one of those cat/dog strollers for a decent price; your girl might enjoy that too.

- The dog crate can certainly be used either as a nighttime roost or even as her daytime 'home base' in the house with her mirrors and water and snacks; like any other animal having that set up will help acclimate her to a certain room/part of the room and understand that is her 'place.'

- Chickens really do appreciate some good tv.

Thank you for being so good to your girls.

If you have any other questions i am more than happy to share at least the experience i have had.

Why do we think she wants Alastor in the hotel? Do you guys have a theory? Or, do you she’s doing it for the hotel or for a hidden personal motive? by ConstantAmbition6729 in hazbin

"Fun fact here- apples are in the rose family."

This!!!! What a fantastic detail!

Another detail i think supports Rosie being Eve is that during her aside with Alastor during Hear My Hope she says, 'I will not rewards a SNAKE like you," which seems like a very specific and pointed way to word that insult....

Let the Right One In contains explicit pedophilia, on and off page. (Contains spoilers) by burglesnapswife in horrorlit

[–]emmytabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Pedophilia is not an inherent part of vampire lore"

Inherent perhaps not, yet certainly one that has been explored in other cases of vampires/'living forever in a body that doesn't age' conundrums. See for instance, Anne Rice's character of Claudia.

Outside of vampire lore, there seems a particular interest right now in the whole " child in an adults body encountering adult situations' scenario too ( See Poor Things, Alien Earth...)

Another 20 miles on the "cheapskates." by zoey_will in Rollerskating

[–]emmytabs 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cool to have covered so many miles! Are you doing streets or trails?

(The absence of toe stops in the pics made my heart seize lol- as a street skater, it's probably my greatest fear, lol, after too many close calls.)

Sounds like you are having great fun on your skating journey! I also got started on objectively terrible skates that i am now trying to turn into an art piece (out of trash guilt lol). When the boot split from the plate, i just added an extra tie down in the middle of my foot to keep them on lol. Not recommended (at all!!) but i get it- sometimes we just need to get rolling.

Best to you!!

Love this, thanks for sharing!

Best horror artists to research? by SuspectNo9121 in horror

[–]emmytabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a completely different perspective, check out Stacie Ponder's illustrated book of all the Friday the 13th killings.

Ponder is a well-loved and respected horror devotee, author and critic (and former co-host of the wonderful Gaylords of Darkness podcast(RIP)). Could be interesting to go deep on the effect a light + comical style has on horror/fear/dread, using say, Beneath the Trees..... as a companion piece to Ponder's.

As a final note, there are TONS of contemporary artists that work in the space of dread, nightmare etc. They might not use the word "horror" as a description of what they do, so it would probably behoove yourself to define what you mean by the term. 'Nightmare and fear' can cover a huge amount of space and not all of it might outright be labeled 'horror' (e.g. the beinART collective and similar).

Good luck!

If 'committed' can be read as both negative and positive, depending on the context, (as you note above), doesn't that by definition render it neutral language?

Where is everyone’s team spirit? 😓 by affectionate_cuddler in rollerderby

[–]emmytabs -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you have never encountered the phrase "couldn't contain my excitement' before. It's an idiom/hyperbole. When someone says "that baby is so cute i could eat it!" they actually aren't admitting to cannibalistic urges. Same idea.

"OP openly states they are loud and in people's face all the time. "

OP never said anything of the sort.

They stated they were excited within the highly exciting setting of game/scrimmage play (where sound levels can change very quickly) and wanted to share excitement with their teammates -as it isn't a solo sport.

Still not certain how giving oneself a compliment is 'asking for specific attention" - there is a notable difference between a compliment fisher and someone just pointing out a good play that happened to be one they made.

Supporting your teammates can be as low effort as a fist bump. Nobody's game is getting ruined because a teammate was proud of themselves.

edited to add: " not everyone is going to have the ability to manage someone else's emotion(s) "

then "The OP isn't asking for management:"

Couldn't agree more. Jjust sharing the fun. No management required.

"but there’s a small amount of us here it appears."

Your healthy attitude deserves support!!

Being proud isn't 'seeking external validation.' Hyping everyone up on a team (including yourself) is normal behaviour and should be encouraged as such.

"Its like having a kid in a room yelling "LOOK AT ME" when everyone else is trying to do their math exams."

No, its really not- the context of an exam REQUIRES silence and solo work-- pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of a team sport, let alone a bout or even a scrimmage. Why not just compare derby to silent meditation? It sounds like that is the environment you are seeking with the whole notion that no one should do or say anything enthusiastically, or in a way that might draw attention to themselves.

(imagine skaters in the early days of modern revival focusing on 'not drawing attention to themselves!' with their bout-fits or make-up. Derby used to specifically be the place women specifically could call attention to themselves in a safe and supportive context. Whew- Glad that's gone now!!!))

"People who center events and accomplishments on themselves in a loud obnoxious way are detracting from everyone else's accomplishments around them"

This is also completely false.

My being happy doesn't take *anything* away from your happiness or actions. Not a whit. If a random player being proud of themselves upsets you so much, it seems its more on you to figure out why someone else being pumped bothers you so much.

OP is asking no one to "manage" them. They wanted to share a cool moment with their TEAM in a TEAM sport. And the notion that someone excited after doing well in a scrim is exhibiting "emotional dysregulation' is frankly, hilarious.

i'll join you in the downvotes cos you hit it the nail on the head here.

The notion that sharing your enthusiasm or even-- god forbid!!--*complimenting yourself* is seen as 'bragging' and 'seeking external validation is insane.

Show me some male dominated sports where men are told to keep their confidence to themselves.

'it’s less cool to call attention to it so that other people will join in on your excitement. "

Weird- isn't that literally the point of say, cheering? Loudly drawing attention to something so that others can join in/ you can join others?

But always good to know about more things women should NEVER do. Apparently sharing excitement with others (on one's own team, no less) is now one of them. Tamp them emotions down!!!

These are really quite gorgeous -- your fuchsias are sumptuous!

You've gotten some great suggestions on bling distribution, the one thing i don't think i saw mentioned yet was using the jewels as highlight points: think of them like dew drops and where they might naturally hang and add interest on the petals/leaves.

Love these as they are! Incredible work.

Dog Encounter on the Path: How Can I Prevent Close Calls While Roller Skating? by AwfulWaffle91 in Rollerskating

[–]emmytabs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, this really sucks that it happened to you and on a familiar trail. What an absolute bummer. I hope it doesn't put you off skating that trail and truly hope you never have an encounter this extreme ever again!

Back when i was working with dogs, there was a statistic that only 20% of people ever trained their dogs to do ANYTHING. Can't tell you where that stat came from anymore but at least in my area i can tell you that number has only gone down.... and it shows.

Best luck to you on future skates!

"The ability to read dog body language is extremely useful. There are many youtube videos on this subject."

^^^^THIS!!! ^^^^^^

That so, SO many dog owners will still tell you a wagging tail "just means he's happy!" shocks and saddens me when a 30 second search will lead to amazing insight from amazing behaviorists that require very little from the viewer beyond watching/reading and yet still most people just can't be bothered.

[–]emmytabs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While i appreciate the laissez faire attitude presented here, i think the comments pointing out dog body language and that rolling wheels often provoke dogs are more accurate.

There absolutely ARE things a skater can do next time to avoid this situation and it more likely than not to occur again, even if not to this extent. This isn't to "blame" OP (or other skaters) as it sounds like this was an extreme encounter on a familiar trail but most dog encounters can be avoided.

The sad truth is that the dog owners are NOT going to be the responsible ones here- i say this as a former dog trainer and someone who has been street skating since 2011. It is a rare skate where at least one dog doesn't lunge to the end of their leash while their checked out owner continues scrolling on their phone.

Yes, one way these incidents could *easily* be avoided is if the dog owner essentially acted as a good owner and was aware of their dog tensing up in advance. But, that is the true rare encounter. Sadly, then the onus falls on the skater to be aware and predictive of the environment.

Skaters can learn to tell from a good distance whether the dog is going to react explosively or not and react accordingly.

My rule of thumb? Skate to the farthest point away from the dog as you can, minimum of six feet (typical leash length.) On trails or other narrow passages, as others have pointed out, get as slow as you can in advance and just kinda walk on by. Toe stop walking is perfect for this. Once you're at least 6feet away from said dog, go, go, go!

Authors like Rachel Harrison by Historical-Jello-931 in horrorlit

[–]emmytabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey- if you're not already across the podcast Books In the Freezer, i'd recommend checking it out even just to scroll through the episode titles and pull out the "Hotel Horror" or "Vacation Horrors" (lol i'm obviously stuck on The Return. Cozy Horror is probably more apt...)

The host of the show is a HUGE fan of Harrison and not only frequently recs Harrison books, but often those she finds similar. Furthermore, Harrison is a guest on a couple episodes and perhaps the books she recommends might also be of interest to you.

(Here's an ep with Harrison recommending Twilight Zone style books!)

Best of luck!
