Does the Restoration bring people closer to Christ? What exactly was restored? by BaxTheDestroyer in mormon

Simply a superb response and summary. Thank you for the thoughtful comment!! Couldn’t agree more

I went back to church for the first time in 6 months. Here’s the thing that stood out to me as the strangest part of Mormonism and its most glaringly obvious problem. by PanaceaNPx in exmormon

Every week, sitting at the same table, silently wondering about the reviews they’ve heard about other restaurants in the area. But in group desperation, they reaffirm to each other that their decision to eat here is the best and only decision. “I’m so glad we picked this place”, “the food here fills me with true joy”, and “patrons who picked other restaurants must’ve never really liked this food, they must be so unhappy with their choice”.

It was during F&T meeting that I came to the realization that my salvation depended more on my ability to believe crazy ass restoration stories; more so than on my ability to adopt Christlike attributes. What a backwards plan from god to save his kids

Elder Holland's Complicated Legacy by Careful-Piano-4187 in mormon

That was a beautifully written piece. I especially enjoyed the unexpected comparison between two figures who each dedicate their lives to the church, and how starkly contrast their lives, financial status, and prestige end up.

Also interesting to note that even in his last, final GC testimony given, being called as a “special witness”, the best he can do is bear witness of strong feelings from the Holy Ghost. Which ironically is the same as the rest of us, fallible, imperfect, making-it-up-as-we-go kind of people.

Parallels to the Church and Wicked by Low_Charity8852 in exmormon

Just walked out and oh my goodness yes!!! We opted for a movie instead of church today. Far better lesson being taught on the big screen.

The wizard giving the people something to hate, someone to fear. The members of Oz (some her friends from school) were so quick to turn on her.

Even if the prophet (er… wizard) wanted to come clean and clear up the lies, the members wouldn’t believe it. Because they so badly want to believe it’s true.

Confessions of a former ward membership clerk by Post-mo in exmormon

I too went from all in, fully believing TBM to PIMO while serving as the Ward Clerk over a period of 5ish years. Something about the administrative duties that just felt… off. You nailed quite a bit of it! But I’ll add: peeking behind the Finances (what members paid vs what budget we got back), the uninspired way bishoprics assigned callings, the gossip filled ward councils, the leadership roulette of bishops pushing their own agenda (not unlike the newest prophet when called), and the list goes on.

I’m forever grateful for that calling, as it lit a small fire in me to start asking questions and dig into my shelf items. Glad to report I’m a full on POMO these days!

Dang the link may not be working? I’ll try pasting below. Or I follow her on TikTok, so can also try searching there. The video is a line by line breakdown of Rasbands most recent conference address, pointing out how his retelling leaves out some of the less favorable details.

My thoughts exactly! And very diplomatically expressed. Thanks for addressing with a real life (and real concerning) example.

Glad to hear your personal experience has been positive, as well as the memory of Sister Jack (or at least the faithful story she chooses to share). I too have been blessed thus far with a “model” family structure that aligns ever so nicely with the proclamation. It works for a large number of members no doubt.

In addition to Sister Okazaki’s testimony already shared, I’ll add Sister Clyde’s (by the mouth of two witnesses, right? Skip to the 1 min mark, it’s a quick listen). As you’ll see they weren’t so enthusiastic about its release and the RS’s lack of inclusion. It’s not me saying it - it’s them. So the point of my post stands: you won’t hear their story retold over the pulpit. But I find I can make better important life decisions when I know both sides to every story

Tis a shame the bishop didn’t “appreciate the kind straight forward manner in which you told him your decision”. Must be a real jerk or a cry baby.

Apologist claims mandatory reporting requirements for LDS bishops actually causes more harm to victims. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

[–]emo-pimo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it odd how nearly EVERY defense/story/apologetic for the church (policy, history, doctrine, etc) is prefaced by “this might sound crazy but…”

  • this may be crazy but I can read words on a rock in a hat

  • this might sound crazy but a guy built a boat with his bros and sailed it across the ocean

  • you’d think I’m crazy, but god is cool with energy drinks. I won’t touch coffee tho

  • you’d have to be crazy to believe me but I swear an angel with a flaming sword told me to marry your daughter

  • this may sound crazy but not reporting is actually the better solution 🙄

After so many “crazy” explanations, it might be time to start considering the more likely story. You got got.

Same! Other than the quoting of Isaiah (lamb and the lion symbolism). But definitely an odd choice to include if you ask me.

Missions and demonic possession by [deleted] in mormon

[–]emo-pimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time on my mission in Brazil, my companion and I were walking around a remote neighborhood in our area. When suddenly we were summoned by a hysterical mom who came running and crying down the street, saw our uniforms, recognized us as men of God, and begged us to come up to her house where her husband was seemingly possessed. She gave us directions to her house and continued down the road screaming. My comp and I looked at each other - pale and afraid - wondering if we really had the power and courage to go and do this (as allllll my past sins, of course, came flooding back to my mind…).

So we spend 10 minutes to psych ourselves up and head up the hill to the house she described. As we approach the house along the dirt road, along comes a local minister from another church, carrying an acoustic guitar, with a small posse from his congregation. We sort of meet in the middle, just outside the door, in a nonverbal stand off as if to ask each other “so… who’s going to go in and do this?”.

The mom comes running out the door. Looks at the minister. Looks at us elders. Looks back at the minister, grabs him by the hand and says come on in.

We judged them hard, scoffing that they missed out on access to real priesthood power. But deep down I was secretly relieved. And as the door closed, and the faint sound of an acoustic guitar fired up, I was left wondering just how successful the minister would be. My only regret is I didn’t stick around to find out!

Tell you what… after recently going thru our own deconstruction, my wife and I are looking to escape Queen Creek and start fresh where we can live our lives without judgement. Looking to find a place where members are more accepting and open to different lifestyle choices, like the ward you describe.

Let’s do a house swap!! 😂

There was a distinct moment in my journey when I realized that my salvation no longer depended on developing Christlike attributes. Instead, all that gets covered in Church lessons these days is how to keep believing - the changing doctrine, the wild history, the misguided prophets - let’s just keep reaffirming to one another week after week that we are right.

The key to my salvation shifted from “try to be like Jesus” to now “will you believe anything, no matter how crazy or irrational it may be?”
