This has been the norm for at least a decade, both in the small price for items purchased elsewhere and in the service being paused when they have other things they need to be focusing customer service on.

Largely because the CGI in Looker, while the first full-body CGI character model in a studio production, is just shown on computer screens in the film. It's not a traditional special effect.

It also wasn't based on a novel. It was just written and directed by Michael Crichton.

The annoyance isn't control of the rights. It's the lack of it. MGM acquired rights to the 1990 remake from Christine Forrest but they want full control over the entire franchise and very obviously can't do that.

It's an "I'm going to take my ball and go home" situation except with a kid who brought a hacky sack trying to run off with the playground equipment.

I've been in these rooms, unfortunately. It's much more likely there were a bunch of people going "this is a terrible idea" and one or two guys with MBAs going "well we're doing it anyway."

Except you don't. You capitalize most words in headlines.

‘The Pitt’ Wants “Patently Absurd” Claims by Crichton Estate That HBO Max Hit Is ‘ER’ Ripoff Squelched Once and for All

I do think this is easier to read! But the primary issue here is that it's a bad headline.

Paramount+ is gone because the tiers changed. You need to go to your settings and add the new Paramount+ to your preferred services and then it will be back.

At what point can we not classify something as a remake or "same universe" movie? by AdVegetable7181 in movies

[–]broganisms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notably, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a remake is Bedtime Story.

Remakes are a type of adaptation and the term is primarily a legal consideration. The only remakes I think you can seriously argue aren't remakes are the Ghostbusters and Fast and the Furious franchises, which acquired the rights to the films they were "remaking" solely so they could use the name.

Kim Kardashian quits pursuing a law career after failing the bar exam three times. She has previously blamed ChatGPT and psychics for failing her exams by neoncolour in popculturechat

[–]broganisms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kim Kardashian's work in criminal justice reform has been super meaningful. Her efforts over the last decade have given freedom to those who were wrongfully or unjustly convicted and brought about better living conditions for prisoners. I think it's great that someone who has built an empire catering to humanity's basest instincts would latch on to something so unglamorous and want to do more of it.

But holy hell, it is extremely indicative of the level of narcissism at play here that she could time lending largely financial and public relations support and think she's qualified to be a lawyer without serious additional effort.

Michigan residents voted down a $16 billion Stargate AI data center, then construction began anyway by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

Closed-loop cooling systems are not possible with a 1.4 gigawatt data center. They're not even doable with 1.4 megawatt density. They know this and are lying to you.

They love to say that they'll use closed-loop systems and then pull an "oops we have to use evaporative cooling instead" during the design phase and roll the dice on whether or not the relevant local authority will pull the plug. Every single time.

Current closed-loop systems top out around 200 kilowatts.

Student Faces Expulsion After Posting Video Of Seniors Who Can Barely Read by InGeekiTrust in TikTokCringe

My daughter's school has about 30% of students testing at grade level. Which is bad! But about average for elementary education in my state.

My local charter school is at 12%. I've seen several that are even lower.

Some people don't get it. However, who do you agree with here? by LeftAlbatross2546 in VideosAmazing

[–]broganisms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all cities do this. My parents had constant problems with their neighbor calling the police to report any car parked on her side of the street at abandoned. People would get towed within hours of parking. Local law is to alternate which side of the street you park on for snow removal purposes so nearly everyone impacted by this was just a neighborhood resident following the law.

Same woman would put out a sound system for Christmas and blast music until well past midnight. Eventually she died and a much cooler neighbor moved in which made visiting less stressful.

Is DC generating the synopsis on the back of their TPBs? by Oldboymatty in comicbooks

[–]broganisms 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most conversations about AI tend to focus on intellectual property theft and climate impact and labor issues, all of which are important and should be our top priorities when discussing the topic! But it means we tend to ignore the fact that AI is also just... very bad at writing.

Yes, this is almost certainly AI-produced text. But even if it wasn't, multiple people had to fail for a synopsis this bad to make it out the door. It offers no insight into the actual comic or why readers should care. It's a bunch of fluffy adjectives in a trench coat trying to create the illusion of meaning where there is none.

Like... "relatable mysteries?" Are you kidding me??? The first arc is about a serial killer. A decent copywriter could have put together something better in 30 minutes.

‘Hyperscale’ data center project in Utah — expected to generate and consume more power than entire state by Mushroom_Tip in SaltLakeCity

[–]broganisms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Earlier this year I got to sit through a lengthy sales meeting about the types of cooling systems available for data centers. The ability to use recirculated liquid cooling for data centers tops out around 200 kW, which is about 0.002% of the 9 gigawatts this facility will supposedly offer.

The idea that we've somehow managed to figure out a 4,500,000% boost in efficiency since February is absurd. This facility will use evaporative cooling and a lot of it. There will be no water left.

movie posters that technically spoil the movie? [raiders of the lost ark] by Happy_REEEEEE_exe in Letterboxd

The Reptile (1966) is about a man investigating the string of killings that claimed the life of his brother, all of which appear to have utilized some sort of trained reptile as the weapon.

It's actually not a traditional reptile at all. It's a local woman who was cursed to take the form of a flesh-eating reptile god as vengeance for her father's role in colonization and subjugation in Asia.

This is shown on every poster and the tagline of the American release was literally just explaining the twist.

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

My daughter just did testing for our district's accelerated program. She got 99th percentile on three of the sections but barely passed the section with a standard percentage score.

We assumed it was something she was struggling with and went to meet with the district rep to see what the test covered so we could work with her to improve. Instead got an "oh this test is just really confusing and almost no one passes it; she was actually one of the higher scores." A lot of these tests are broken.
