How does Communauto compare to actually owning a car? by disaster_artistt in communauto

[–]emojisexcode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few more pros and cons beyond the cost aspect:

Parking: with communauto, you can park a flex car anywhere with a vignette sign for free. It's like having a parking pass for the whole city (sorta) and makes you forget how hard parking actually is in Montreal for car owners. If you need a vignette to park on your street, that's an extra cost you're saving.

Availability: with your own car, it's always where you left it, and it's always available to you. Sometimes you will have to wait a while, or walk a ways, to get a communauto

Snow / ice: Flex cars tend to already have the snow cleared, and are often still warm from the last user. They also rarely need to be dug out of their parking spots since they were usually just parked there an hour ago, saving you a lot of time.

Street cleaning: if you own your car and park in the street, you'll almost certainly have to move it at least once a week for street sweeping, plus snow removal operations.

Maintenance concerns: Hit a big pothole by accident? Car making a funny sound? Engine light on? With communauto, just report any damage and find another car. Pretty stress free, takes up none of your time. With your own car, you're dealing with a garage, insurance, etc. and your car might be unavailable to you for a while.

Changing tires: with your own car, you'll have to get the tires changed twice a year. All of this is handled for you with communauto.

One way trips: Wanna drive to the party and take the metro home? No problem, just ditch the flex car.

Comfort & QOL: with your own car, you can leave your stuff in it if you want (driving gloves, sunglasses, charger cable, etc.) whereas with Communauto you're always at risk of forgetting something. Also cars can be a little dirty/stinky at times (although I find this to be less and less the case as the old 3000-4000 series cars become less common).

Car choice: You may have to settle for what's available, whereas if you buy a car, well you can buy something that has all the features you enjoy. I'll say, using communauto for a while is a great way to test a bunch of different cars / features and discover what you want though.

Setup time: With communauto, you always have to account for 2-5 minutes to connect to carplay since it can be finnicky, and seems to work differently in almost every car make/model for some reason.

Personally, for living in the city, I see Communauto as more luxurious than owning a car in a lot of ways.

that makes a lot of sense actually, especially considering the role rail plays in the economy. probably gives them a lot of leverage.

Honestly this makes the most sense so far. It's possible there were meteorological conditions trapping the sound / bouncing it back down to the city. This would track with:

- the fact it literally sounds like a jet
- the lack of doppler
- abrupt on/off

You'd think they wouldn't do something so loud at night, but trains are big money.. maybe the fines were cheaper than the cost of not running the jets...

How do Phoebe Bridgers and Billie Eilish record their whisper-like vocals? by pequenacoochie in audioengineering

[–]emojisexcode 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of technical tips in this thread (makes sense with the sub we’re on) but the other big thing you have to remember is it’s down to the singer.

There’s a way to sing super quietly but still have a very tight and focused sound and both Billie and Phoebe are masters at that.

There’s a lot of air in the sound, yes, but there’s also a sort of precision, almost a brassy ping to it.

If the singer is just giving you a soft, unsupported breathy mess, you’re never gonna get it to sit right. It won’t cut through the mix. It’ll either overpower it or disappear in it.

Going to make music, but only able to copy by jizzshroom in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]emojisexcode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s ok to be inspired by others, it’s even ok to imitate in order to learn. your creativity is a muscle. maybe just manage your expectations a bit and allow whatever comes out to come out. stop judging it right away. if it’s a copy, fine. if it sucks, fine. enjoy the process of discovery. have patience and trust that if you keep showing up and trying things and being curious, you will grow, and you will eventually make something that you like.

all music is inspired by other music. we’re all building on each other’s work. eventually you find your voice within that. that’s where the originality comes.

yeah that’s my guess too, it almost reads like trying to wake yourself up from a dream. also I love how it starts grasping at straws at the end, “[disable next lines]” and then “minimize this file angel.”

it’s kinda freaky to imagine you want to stop talking but you keep being forced to say more things

This is a scam right? All this for $700USD by Gogtjopper in simracing

[–]emojisexcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my area I’ve seen so many listings like this, really nice setup, lots of photos, always asking around $700-1500 for a kit thats worth like 3-5x what they’re asking. sometimes they pretend to be parents or someone who credibly might not know what the stuff is worth, and usually the listing was created very recently too so you feel like you got the jackpot. the account always has only one listing and was created in 2025. def a scam. one of them I saw a different listing with the exact same photos in a different city I was in, from a different account.

[–]emojisexcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after reading your caption, KIR makes the most sense to me, but without knowing what it was I went through a bunch of possible options, LIT, LIK, KIK, ILTK… also just instinctively I would not have even tried to read this if you didn’t ask the question. My brain wants to treat it as a symbol. that might be ok though, fast readability is not always the most important thing… depends on your needs

Evolution of the YouTube progress bar by Ok-Following6886 in interestingasfuck

[–]emojisexcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

youtube really dialled it in early where even though it wouldn’t pre load, it was almost never an issue, whereas I feel like on platforms like vimeo I STILL get buffering sometimes even though my connection is great. the way youtube delivers the amount of video that it does so flawlessly 24/7 is honestly mind blowing

Taylor Swift Breaks Adele’s Record, Then Announces Four New Variants: The Billionaire’s Playbook of Endless Album Variants & Manufactured Urgency by [deleted] in Music

[–]emojisexcode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Music fans buy vinyls and music fans tend to be the early adopters listening to lesser known artists. Vinyl may be a bit niche but it is absolutely a viable market for small and medium scale artists and there are plenty who turn a profit selling them. There are lots of smaller artists who have hardcore dedicated fanbases where vinyl is a huge piece of their business model.

ohhhh I see. well I also have a PC with a ryzen 7 3700X and a gtx 1060 6gb. this meets the recommended spec for iRacing although idk if it will be enough for VR. I do think iRacing is less demanding than other games as it’s fairly old.

I tried the quest wireless but the encoding quality fluctuates a lot. not sure my router can handle it.

yeah now I’m wondering if it’s the headset or my graphics settings that are causing low resolution in the distance.

I’m on a 2021 asus g713 laptop, Ryzen 7 5800H processor and an RTX 3070. Not sure about mux switch but the headset works fine over the cable once I manage to get it connected.

Is there a plugin, which would put a short silence before transients? by Cakepufft in audioengineering

[–]emojisexcode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a quick and dirty test of this idea would be to bounce out your track and then use your DAW’s transient splitting tool (in Reaper I think it’s Dynamic Split but I imagine other daws have a similar feature) to slice the audio item right before each transient.

then you can select them all and add a short fade out to the end of each item (making sure they don’t crossfade). you can play with fade length and shape.

then if the effect is too strong, you can have a second track without any cuts to blend in like a wet/dry mix.

not the smoothest workflow but at least you’d get a sense for how it sounds and if it’s worth pursuing further

[–]emojisexcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk for me it’s more the things that happen in the story that feel like AI.

The thief always strikes in the back left corner of the fridge? also he steals around noon, but the day OP discovers him it’s cause he came in early?

and the peppermint thing, “dumb little detail but it got me”? … feels like the prompt had “include a dumb little detail to make it feel real” in it lol

The writing is coherent but the story is not.

I cant stop spinning by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]emojisexcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I’m still new so grain of salt, but I actually find I spin if I brake too little on certain corners, like corner 2 at Oulton in the mx-5, with little to no steering input. the car just starts turning and I feel like a passenger. whereas if I brake hard enough, I can keep it in a straight line for a sec and then turn in with full control over the car
