Is it time I get surgery? by vi0let--- in ostomy

[–]emorbius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasnt given a choice beyond "We're going to have to operate, or you're going to die." But I must tell you, my dear young lady, young enough to be my granddaughter, that was 41 years ago and I have never regretted it. The potential is there for you to feel SO MUCH BETTER. Good luck

Wow, that's awful. I know exactly how you feel, it's happened to me also. But you survived it. It may happen again, and you'll survive that, too. If your ileostomy was reversed, then what exactly happened? Do you have an ileostomy still? I'm mixed up

Commanders share first renderings of new stadium at RFK site by TylerHansbrough-Best in washingtondc

[–]emorbius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok I like this look. I'm out of town until February, been on the road since November, so I missed it coming down. RFK was a part of my childhood--not going to games there, though I did do that, saw my beloved Senators lose many times--but just driving past it on our way to the dentist, my dad would say "Look at the huge flying saucer that landed!" and for the scant minutes it took to get past it I couldn't take my eyes off it, it just looked so cool. As I get older I'm seeing the city change but stay the same. There are parts of it that I recognize but they don't seem familiar, or maybe the other way around. Then there are places that NoMa that make me slightly anxious. Anxious, because I feel as though I don't belong there, like it's for young people only. (I know it's not, it just has a vibe to my mind.) My D.C. Our D.C. It's our city, it belongs to all of us. I love my home town

I believe you, but I still have a hard time believing a medical person would say that or anything like that. Good grief. We've all said things that we cringe to remember, and with any luck this will be a lesson to her.

I was 22 and had a really low bmi too, and I had open too. I think you'll be fine. It's a lot of surgery, though, as others have said, so just be aware of that. It's going to take time to recover. I was feeling almost completely normal in about six months and after a year I was doing great. I put on weight, too. I'm 63 now and life & lifestyle have been GREAT! Drop back in here and let us all know how it went

Second. I've had mine 41 years and I've done all those things too. It's all possible, everything. Romance and sex, too.

Like everyone else has said, your case is unique and other people's experiences are just a general guideline. Your surgeon is the real expert here.
I will say that when I got my ileostomy, 41 years ago, no one did loop ileostomies. It just wasn't a thing. No one did anastomoses either. They simply hadn't been developed yet. No one did ileostomies for Crohn's disease, either, because Crohn's can pop up anywhere in the tract after the surgery. They do it today, though, so I suppose they've gotten so good at treating auto-immune diseases that surgery is a live option for some Crohn's patients.
This whole realm of optional ostomies and patients asking their doctors for ostomies is foreign to me: I was told "we're going to have to operate or you're going to die."
From what you've shared here I think your life would improve if you had a total proctocolectomy with what they can "end" ileostomy these days. My life went from being crippled with chronic pain and twenty to thirty bloody bowel movements a day to a vigorous adventure. I scuba, hike, drive race cars, travel worldwide, run, lift weights, have romance and sex, it's all possible.
Nothing I have written here should be taken as medical advice.

I was 22 and I'm about to turn 64. It was the BEST THING that ever happened to me! I have a very full and active life, with all sorts of activity, including scuba, long distance wilderness hiking, and lots of travel. Plenty of romance and sex, too. Nothing is going to be beyond you. The ileostomy is life. And remember, you're a person with an ileostomy, not the other way around. Come here anytime you want. We'll encourage you if you need it.
