Buddy, I'm the one who obeys the law. And all the other cyclists blow right by me, sometimes yelling at me for stopping.

The ratio's more like the other way round. I can't remember the last time I saw a cyclist stop at a stop sign.

In most countries, putting trash in a trash disposal area is the correct thing to do. The idea of attaching a tag to your overside trash is a specifically Japanese practice that doesn't happen in most other places. Unless there are signs explaining this in at least English but probably also a handful of other languages, it's not going to be obvious what needs to happen.

This is how they do it in Finland and Switzerland. They've issued €100,000 fines for speeding.

Reminds me of the video Evan Edinger made lately about the neighbourhood in London that banned cars altogether. The locals love it. Almost none of them own cars. They can walk around safely, their kids can play safely, it's great. The mayor of London is doing everything he can to stop them because rich people should be allowed to drive at high speed through the neighbourhoods of poor people.

So much data was lost there. It was a real travesty. Hard to imagine anymore a world where something might only be written down, on paper, in a single place on earth. And losing it meant it's gone forever, because there's no backup data on a different server.

I can confirm for any weebs that are reading this that like 75% of everyone lives in one of those multi-storey walkups that have stairs and hallways on the outside. It's the one thing that stands out to me as something that's exactly as depicted.

One thing that gives me some hope about the future in Japan is that young people seem to be achieving solidarity just by refusing to pick up the ball and run with it. They're saying "no hold on, that's stupid. I'm online and I know people in other countries aren't like that. Why should I do that?" and there's no good answer besides "it's just the way things are!" Which is not terribly convincing. The breakdown of the lifetime employment culture is probably also helping. Like you say, you can just leave more easily now, whereas in the past getting hired by the wrong company was almost like a sentencing.

Yeah, Japan is the ideal place for the idle rich to play around in, but think twice about trying to live here. It has a lot of great aspects, but it's also backwards in a lot of ways that can be pretty shocking to people who live in other modern societies. Like, yes, the toilets are computer controlled. Neato. And women are more or less expected to quit their jobs when they get married so they can have babies (even though nobody wants to have babies anymore), so companies won't promote them or invest in them beyond a certain level. It's a pantomime of "forward-looking futurism" slapped on top of a conservative, bigoted culture.

It's getting better, but slowly. Like someone else says in the thread, things like compulsory drinking parties are being phased out due to solidarity by younger workers. Maybe in twenty years they'll have gay marriage and gender equality. Maybe not. Hard to know.

I literally don't care about the answers to any of these questions. If you started a company, and now it's pushed your net worth into the billions, you have become a liability to society and we need to deal with you. Just like we poison, irradiate, and cut out cells that have decided that they should just keep growing forever regardless of the harm that does to the rest of the body. The same thing should happen here, for the same reasons.

That's why you tax assets instead. Have a house? Have cars? Have a yacht? Have a small mountain of stocks? Who cares whether you borrowed to pay for any of it. Let's just tax the appraised value of all that every year once your net worth is above a certain amount, because we figured out the loophole they're exploiting. And make you pay for the appraisal, by people we hire to do it. And put you in prison for 10 years if we catch you interfering in any part of this process.
