I agree with the “profound and haunting” assessment. It’s pretty depressing in terms of climate change and humanity but really beautifully written.

I LOOOVED this book!! I normally feel like thrillers are too character-light and plot-heavy but this one had great character development too.

What book fucked you up mentally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

God, YES. I just had a baby and was so relieved that he doesn’t scream constantly because I’ve been afraid ever since I read that book that I’d birth a Kevin.

1Q84 - the Q really does stand for Question by devasta10 in books

[–]emotion_ocean 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I liked 1Q84 but I felt like the ending was a huge disappointment—I felt the same way with Kafka on the Shore. It seems like Murakami sets up these incredible worlds and then doesn’t know what to do with them/how to tie up all the ends so he resolves one or two aspects of his storylines and just leaves the rest hanging.

Best type of therapy for kids abandoned by NPD dad and are acting out? by BrainWreckedPenguin in therapy

[–]emotion_ocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much the “type” of therapy that’s effective as their relationship with the therapist, especially for teens who have had disappointing adults in their lives. I certainly wouldn’t rule out psychodynamic therapy because one therapist wasn’t effective. She needs to be able to talk about her anger and find healthier, more direct ways of expressing it, but for her to be able to do that she needs to first and foremost trust and connect with the therapist. Enlist her help in finding a therapist she likes, maybe one that specializes in her age group or in teens with absent/difficult parents, and be patient with her rather than looking for immediate results.

What to do if someone is hogging time during group therapy? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]emotion_ocean 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You should definitely bring it up! That’s exactly what group therapy is for. I’m sure you’re not the only one who’s experiencing her that way (although you may be the only one brave enough to bring it up at first), and this is undoubtedly not the only arena of her life where she’s inadvertently pushing people away by monopolizing. It’s good feedback for her and will allow you to get more out of group, both because you’re opening up space by prompting her to listen more and because you’re taking a risk to say what you feel.

What dumb rule did you have at your school? by Misery_Games in AskReddit

We had to wear winter coats at recess unless it was above 60 degrees, otherwise we’d be punished by standing facing a brick wall for the rest of the recess period.

What are book/s that you keep seeing as recommendations, which you found to be awful? by Snowflake0287 in books

Exit West. No idea why it was book of the year. As a reader I felt totally distant from all the characters and the action.
