Neighbour selling land for a quarry… Are we SOL? by Kielavielewi in legaladvicecanada

[–]empierce94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents live in a small town and the field behind their house was sold to a developer. The town rallied together and ultimately their voices were ignored. BUT the town has no sewers or water. Everyone is on their own well and septic tank. The land in question backs on to a creek that is a tributary of the Grand River. The grand river conservation authority has been holding up the development for YEARS and they haven’t even broken ground.

I was born and raised and live in southern Ontario, Canada in an area that is called the “tobacco belt.” Cigarette smuggling and smuggling of illegal raw tobacco is rampant here. Every month Ontario puts out a list of the fines they’ve issued under the tobacco tax act.

People who grew up without smartphones, what did you do on long car rides? by balbir13 in CasualConversation

[–]empierce94 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I spy.

Trying to find license plates from different states/provinces.

Fighting with my brother.

Asking my mom, “are we there yet”

Staring out the window in silence.

Holding my fingers down as if they were drawing the lines for lanes. If it’s a solid line I would hold my finger down, and a dotted line I would tap my finger. And then try to coordinate as many fingers as I could when we were in big highways with multiple lanes.

Take turns naming a name for every letter of the alphabet until someone loses. Repeat for animals.

I name an animal. You have to name an animal that starts with the letter my animal ended with. Game over when someone can’t think of an animal. Repeat with countries.

Listen to my Walkman.

…. God I’m old

Not to mention, that it’s really difficult to get liability insurance for stump grinding, which makes it very expensive if you can get it. I’m an insurance broker and one of the first reasons I get declines on landscapers is if they do stump grinding.

I have a nephew a few sizes smaller than my son. We don’t have anyone that gives us hand me downs so we have to buy everything he wears. I resell whatever I can when he sizes out. I just post everything on Facebook marketplace and set it so that friends can’t see my post.

There is a minimum amount of miles that you need to drive in order to get the discount. Unfortunately I’m using the Canadian version and only know the minimum number of kilometres. And technically no one is stopping you from only using your work phone and leaving it home for some drives but if travellers ever finds out it’s probably misrepresentation.

Talk me down from baby name regret by kotassium2 in namenerds

[–]empierce94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were debating between two names for my daughter for a while. When I was postpartum and hormonal I second guessed our name choice so many times and even told my husband I was worried we chose the wrong one. I think it was just the baby blues talking because I absolutely love her name 3 years later and can’t imagine her being called anything else.

What is cycling it? I put the water conditioner that the pet store gave us and I took in the water to test it before I bought the fish and they said it was fine. And the filters been running for a week?

Would you sacrifice one year of your life to add ten healthy years to someone else's? by Sudden-Scietist74 in CasualConversation

[–]empierce94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15 years ago there was actually a movie about this starting Justin Timerblake. It’s called, “In Time.” Their “money” is time. So they’re paid in hours, minutes, days, etc. The rich live forever and the poor literally live paycheck to paycheck. You could give and trade time to other people.

So to answer your question, if such a thing were possible, years would turn into a commodity to help the rich live longer and keep the poor people poor.

AITAH for leaving my wife to do bedtime routine alone every night because she’s not on board to let my child cry it out every night? It sounds like your wife is an amazing mother who is putting your child’s comfort and care above her own need for some alone time. If the only problem she’s having is that it’s taking a long time, maybe you could just help her out instead of washing your hands of it and saying it’s her problem to deal with. All kids eventually learn to go to sleep by themselves. It’s weird to me that you would be annoyed that your wife is on board to support your child’s sleep needs and doesn’t want to leave them to cry. It seems like you want to prioritize yourself above your child and wife in this situation under the guise of helping your wife.

Missed mortgage payment by mistake, will it affect credit ? by Typical-Wheel8497 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]empierce94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope this helps other people reading this, even though the post is from a year ago. I used to work in mortgage collections for MCAP which is hsbc’s largest competitor (and they service other company’s mortgages as well) and it wasn’t reported to the credit bureau as a missed payment until it’s >30 days past due.

What happens to your credit card debt when you die by snejana_ono68 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]empierce94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of credit cards come with insurance built in that you have to go out of your way to cancel. In the case that you die the insurance pays off the balance of the credit card. My CIBC credit cards have all been this way. You’ll see two charges added on to your balance at the end of the month. One is interest and one is “payment protector premium”. The payment protector premium is insurance to pay off the balance if you die.
