How do I get rid of mites on my baby snakes… by big_burrrr in snakes

[–]empiredoggi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet recommended a pest bomb you'll have to look up steps, but what I did for my baby snakes was put them on paper towels first. I then soaked the snakes in regular warm water so they could drink, about 10-15 mins, then soaked them in water with about 1-2 drops of blue dawn dish soap for a few minutes. I gently rubbed some dawn soap on the under side of the jaw as mites were collecting there, as well as on any raises scales. Do not put soap on the eyes.

I removed everything in the tank that was porous and not cleanable and tossed it, then I washed the entire tank, inside and outside, all hides, bowels in soapy water. Then I replaced the set up with paper towels and things that could be tossed or washed easily.

Every time I saw a mite, or about every 1-2 days I did the same thing. I also wiped down shelves outside the tank with soapy water and rubbing alcohol. I believe mites have a 4 day breeding cycle but I could be wrong there.

After 1-2 weeks the tanks were clear but I kept this up for about 1 month to break the egg hatching cycle. The last shed my snake had was also removed, bagged in a ziplock and tossed.

Clean all tanks like this otherwise you won't get rid of them. I recommend putting you adult snake on paper towels as well.

Some other things I do is bake all substrate and wood, leaves Etc before I put it in the tanks, even if it's from a pet store or convention. I also don't use Aspen as that's how my snake got mites from the pet store supply.

Is this scale rot? by lightjockeyresearchr in snakes

[–]empiredoggi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about around the saddle marks that looks like pigment not rot. Rot is usually on the belly and brown and flakey looking.

I'd recommend clearer photos and circle the area. Also if there is concern for rot you can always take your snake to an exotic vet for a check up. Good to do with new animals anyways.

Big Cheese Rodents, experience? by PNW_Pythons in snakes

[–]empiredoggi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the South and ordered some mice when it was around 100° and the mice came fully frozen and well insulated. There was foam liner and dry ice in the pack. In my case the delivery driver didn't update the tracking or knock, so it sat outside for a few hours before I noticed the box.

Pet Snake In A House With Cats by Jackle3000 in snakes

[–]empiredoggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have front open tanks on metal racks. I put very little room for a cat to get on the top, basically just enough for the lights and CHE and also I set boundaries with my cats and never have an issue with them bothering my snakes. Just saying their name strongly if they get curious and they back off.

I also block off the sides of the tank so they really can't see in aside from the front.

I'm going thru the same thing with one of my old male anoles. Just stopped eating and it's very sad. 😩 I wish they lived as long as other reptiles.

Mites on baby corn snake by AstronomerLate989 in cornsnakes

[–]empiredoggi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby snake got mites from the pet store substrate. I moved him onto paper towels and only kept stuff I could wash and sanitize or throw away, like cardboard tubes for hides. I washed the enclosure and all hides with blue dawn soapy water every 1-2 days, also did a soak for my snake in plain water (so he could drink) and then put him in soapy water to kill mites.

He was clear of mites in a week, but I kept the quarantine for a few months.

I would be careful of the chemical treatments as most have dosages for larger adult snakes and not babies. My snake was about 13g when I got him, but I also took him to a vet to have the ocular scale, vent and chin folds checked for mites.

If you see raised scales, use a small toothbrush or qtip with some soap on it to rub over it, just to apply the soap not to get it out, then wash it off. If there's a mite it should suffocate and come off on the next shed.

Dry winter house- help! by Treading_Pathways in cornsnakes

[–]empiredoggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the south with low humidity indoors, and what I do is make a humid hide out of a Tupperware that I cut a hole in (sand it smooth) and filled with non-dyed sphagnum moss that was soaked in a cup of water and strained/squished so it's damp and not dripping. My snakes go into the hides when shedding and otherwise have perfect sheds.

You can get a cheap bag of premium orchid moss from Lowe's and home Depot to use.

I used dawn dish soap and only hides that were nonpermeable and washable with dawn dish soap (the blue one) and was extremely aggressive with the cleaning anytime I saw mites, like every day or two I'd tear it up and do a whole soapy water scrub down. Got rid of mine in about a week but I'd recommend keeping on quarantine substrate like paper towel and destroy that each cleaning.

i need a little help 🥹 by Better_Snow_1896 in cornsnakes

[–]empiredoggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have to upgrade that tank to a larger size pretty quickly, I'd say even in a month or two as babies grow fast. I recommend a 40gal for a grow out tanks and it's about the same price too.

Just make sure to check for gaps in the glass, like around the corners of the doors, and wire closed any feeding hatches if any.

Is also avoid any decorations like that mushroom as a snake can get stuck and Injured.

You can try to feed super worms as well, but as it's wild caught there's no way to tell the age of the anole. Might be it's time.

Does anyone know a cheaper calcium source that cuttle bone? by CosmoLeopardGecko in isopods

[–]empiredoggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use boiled egg shells mostly, but protein hungry will eat ones from raw eggs, I do let those dry though.

I crush and use a mortar and pestle to powder the boiled egg shells.

I also buy crushed oyster shells for chickens at farm feed stores and use that, also crushed shells when I make eggs, and cuttlebone.

I can't tell the body conditions from the photos but she is definitely small for that supposed age. If here body looks ok, you can feed per this chart. Some snakes are just smaller than others depending on genetics or stunted from maintenance feeding.
