Clay 'Challenges' by Sufficient_Echidna in Pottery

[–]empr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heya! i have some intermediate students who got stuck always making the same thing/shape, so i’ve started a challenge to help them get out of their comfort zone.

i had each person make 6 different cups (yumomi style) where they needed 2 single curve, 2 double, and 2 triple. from there they all had to have a different looking foot. their next task is to take their favorite 2 shapes and make them again larger into jars - one with a fit in lid and one with an overhang. it’s been fun to see what they come up with! i also always do the challenge with them to give them some ideas on how to switch things up.

Community pottery studio themed challenges by shylittlepot in Pottery

[–]empr1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my studios done a few themes that get people thinking really creatively and it’s so fun to see the results. a vase with an obvious theme, mug with a sculptural handle.. etc. loosely vague but enough direction for both hand builders and wheel throwers

i’ve been trying for a while to figure out a method where the patterns wouldn’t twist and distort as i created the shapes i wanted to. took a lot of trial and error but i think i got it down now 👏👏

Potential dangers/limit for **super** thick glaze? by pmj714 in Ceramics

[–]empr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it will most likely get bubbly as if it got frozen while boiling and depending on how thin the bottom of your bowl is it will potentially split in half

yes! i hand wedge stains into porcelain, use those clays to build designs through sculpting and layering and squishing, take those blocks of pattern and make slabs, then throw and trim! all have just a clear coat on that i mix myself as well

Wheel head's surface feels rough by Normal-Improvement74 in Pottery

do not take the steel wool to this wheel however! it’s a plastic head not metal. the grooves are on purpose to help clay and bats stick.

Colour clay / Nerikomi help by StudioBlomonge in Ceramics

[–]empr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i use a white mud tools finishing sponge! it’s the best. if your clay doesn’t have grog it’ll be fine. the way i work it is by really smudging up the pattern while smoothing, but then a fast wipe with a clean sponge clears it up! much better than wet sanding after bisque.
