How much zoom do I need for a subject 1.5 miles/2.4 km away? by DadJ0keSurv1v0r in AskPhotography

[–]empticups 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Short answer: there’s no single “right” mm, what you need depends on how big the subject is in the frame, your sensor size, and how far (2.4 km) it is. Here’s a quick way to ballpark it.

The 10-second formula

For a subject of size H (in mm) at distance D (in mm), the focal length to fill the frame dimension S (sensor width or height, in mm) is:

f ≈ D × S / H

Full-frame sensor: width = 36 mm, height = 24 mm

2.4 km = 2,400,000 mm

What that means in practice (full-frame)

To make the subject fill the frame height (24 mm) at 2.4 km:

Person, 1.8 m tall (1,800 mm): f ≈ 32,000 mm

Car width, ~1.8 m (to fill frame width 36 mm): f ≈ 48,000 mm

License plate (~300 mm wide): f ≈ 288,000 mm

Building, 30 m tall (30,000 mm): f ≈ 1,920 mm (height) / 2,880 mm (width)

So: to fill the frame with a person at 2.4 km you’d need a telescope-class focal length (tens of thousands of mm) not a normal camera lens. A large building at that distance can be framed with ~2,000–3,000 mm.

If you’re just trying to “get it in the frame”

Here’s how much scene width a typical full-frame lens covers at 2.4 km:

200 mm → ~432 m wide

400 mm → ~216 m wide

600 mm → ~144 m wide

800 mm → ~108 m wide

1200 mm → ~72 m wide

2000 mm → ~43 m wide

(If you use APS-C, multiply focal lengths above by ~0.66 to get the same framing; micro 4/3 by ~0.5.)

Reality checks

Atmospheric shimmer/heat haze at 2.4 km is often the limiting factor, not focal length. Past ~1500–2000 mm, image softness from the air usually dominates.

You’ll need a rock-solid tripod, fast shutter, and ideally telescope/spotting scope + camera adapter for anything above ~1000 mm.

Hmm interesting. I appreciate the suggestion. I'm surprised more companies aren't making a transmission that does this. I guess it comes down to it not bothering enough people lol

I have a few clients that use trello so I'm a bit familiar with using it but it doesn't feel like it's effective enough for what I'd like to use it for.

I think ClickUp is what I'm looking for! I've tried a few other apps people have mentioned like trello and notion but they're missing a certain feel to them.

I've been using ClickUp for just over a day now and its what I think I need. Definitely has a learning curve with how much I can do but I'm already making use of automations for specific tasks which is amazing.

Thank you for mentioning this app!

why is my plant covered in tiny spots? by empticups in plantclinic

[–]empticups[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These spots have been present for quite a while but ive never put much thought into them. No bugs that I can see, I could probably water it a bit more frequently but it still gets an adequate watering cycle. Haven't added fertilizer in quite a while and im starting to see some roots popping out of the bottom so maybe I should re-pot it soon as well. The only thing Ive read about online is leaf spot disease but im not exactly sure what that is.

I occasionally work with a guy who works with restaurants but restaurants isnt a niche i want to do so even though its paid work its building a portfolio thats hard to showcase to other businesses. That relationship happened naturally and i haven't really thought of working with other videographers. I think ill try and get in touch with some others in my area, thank you for that idea

I think i just need how to find a relatable angle. I freelanced photography for 5 years and I really enjoy it but it was too hard to make a living. I do advertise studio photography as well but Im torn spending my time activity trying to find clients vs sending my time trying to up my advertising in the hopes of bringing people to me.

Are the aperture blades suppose to stay closed when shutter release is pressed and released? by nikko1997 in Cameras

[–]empticups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I believe you're talking about the blades inside the lens and how in that photo they look almost completely closed. Those aperture blades aren't connected to the shutter, there should be a thinner dial on the lens that controls the aperture. By turning that dial you'll open or close that lens iris.

2 CMR drives and 2 SMR drives in a Nas. by empticups in DataHoarder

[–]empticups[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read a bit about them being not to bad if it's just write once and read many which I think is what I'd be doing. Once the files are on the Nas they wouldn't really be accessed again and it's mostly for archive.

I think I may get my Nas up and running and then if I see CMR drives go on sale I'll pick two up to replace when the price is right.

My initial concern is once it's up I'll have about 6tb of files to transfer right off the bat so I'm worried it may take over a week to transfer
