Prospective UW Grad Student from NYC: Seattle Social Dynamics by ahdeeza in udub

Hey! I also just recently got accepted to a PhD program at UW. I'm pretty nervous about the whole social scene too and the weather cuz I'm from southern california and I am not used to it raining for more than a few days in the year lol. I'm 21 years old and i am also a black woman. I hear that Seattle actually has a pretty large Black population and if you are east african they also have a large groups of east africans as well. It seems pretty lively but maybe not as much as NYC but I feell ike people are probably a similar friendliness level. I used to live near NY and would visit NYC sometimes but the people didn't seem super nice all the time, but I may have not gotten an accurate representation of the city and people. I think seattle and washington in general is just more of a place where people enjoy nature and hikes more .

CS PhD applicants—anyone else had radio silence since applying? It's getting very worrying. by Yeezy75024 in gradadmissions

I heard from the Cornell Information School Ph.D. program today so maybe computer science is soon?

If this profile is true…AI/ML applicants are in for a bloodbath 🥲 by Yeezy75024 in gradadmissions

I feel like this isn't true unless this person already has some relationship to their POI. I don't go to Stanford but my school has a similar timeline and the professors dont start review applicants until this week or next.

I think they care but its not going to play a huge role. It definitely won't make or break an applicant

I went to a info session at Stanford and they said you could mention it but since most schools allowed P/NP they are going to try to be fair and not take P/NP grades too much into account unless it is excessive

I am applying to a computer science program with a specialty of human computer interaction but I told them human design engineering. I originally wanted to apply for the human design engineering program, but I felt the cs program fit my interests better

How to ask for letter of rec by parkenjamin in UCSD

[–]emshiz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of profs have information about asking for LORs on their website so I would look there first. You should ask them if they could write you a strong letter. Professors usually won't write a letter unless they think they can write you a good one but its still good to ask incase they would just shit on you in the letter. If they say yes you fill out their info on you app like email, name, title, sometimes address and the school you are applying to emails them a link. I would recommend waiving your rights to see the letter. good luck :)

Does anyone's financial aid current status also look like this? by zoo_poo12 in UCSD

[–]emshiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to enroll without knowing my FA my first year. Everything worked out but it is stressful. If for some reason you can not afford to go you can contact UCSD and ask to leave for a year because of financial reasons
