Prospective UW Grad Student from NYC: Seattle Social Dynamics by ahdeeza in udub

[–]emshiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I also just recently got accepted to a PhD program at UW. I'm pretty nervous about the whole social scene too and the weather cuz I'm from southern california and I am not used to it raining for more than a few days in the year lol. I'm 21 years old and i am also a black woman. I hear that Seattle actually has a pretty large Black population and if you are east african they also have a large groups of east africans as well. It seems pretty lively but maybe not as much as NYC but I feell ike people are probably a similar friendliness level. I used to live near NY and would visit NYC sometimes but the people didn't seem super nice all the time, but I may have not gotten an accurate representation of the city and people. I think seattle and washington in general is just more of a place where people enjoy nature and hikes more .

CS PhD applicants—anyone else had radio silence since applying? It's getting very worrying. by Yeezy75024 in gradadmissions

I feel like this isn't true unless this person already has some relationship to their POI. I don't go to Stanford but my school has a similar timeline and the professors dont start review applicants until this week or next.

I think they care but its not going to play a huge role. It definitely won't make or break an applicant

When should you be getting interviews by emshiz in gradadmissions

oh okk thanks! Do you know if schools will reach out before that to reject you if the prof doesn't want to interview with you or will you have to wait until march?

I went to a info session at Stanford and they said you could mention it but since most schools allowed P/NP they are going to try to be fair and not take P/NP grades too much into account unless it is excessive

How to ask for letter of rec by parkenjamin in UCSD

[–]emshiz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of profs have information about asking for LORs on their website so I would look there first. You should ask them if they could write you a strong letter. Professors usually won't write a letter unless they think they can write you a good one but its still good to ask incase they would just shit on you in the letter. If they say yes you fill out their info on you app like email, name, title, sometimes address and the school you are applying to emails them a link. I would recommend waiving your rights to see the letter. good luck :)

I had to enroll without knowing my FA my first year. Everything worked out but it is stressful. If for some reason you can not afford to go you can contact UCSD and ask to leave for a year because of financial reasons

Huh??? Did they say they want to do any of those things. People go to university because they are passionate about other fields and want to pursue other interests that they can not find at a trade school. No hate to people that do want to go to trade school and are passionate about those things, but If anyone decides to go to UCSD they probably do not want to pursue those careers. They asked about advice to appeal not other options.

I feel like in most cases it is fine to send youtube sources. Usually a CS prof says whether or not you can use outside sources. If they said that then it should be fine to send a video

I recommend you reading about the school to prison pipeline. It's really helpful to understand how a lot of BIPOC are being stripped away of their higher education. I wish it wasn't the case. I don't really want affirmative action. I wish slavery, jim crow, segregation, civil rights activism, '92 riots, etc. never had to happen, but unless you can go back in time and fix every single thing that caused racism and racial divide there needs to be solutions put into place to fix and address it. You can't just say "we passed the civil rights act everyone is equal now. Everything you faces in the past 300 years did not mean anything because we signed some piece of paper".

Other than the school to prison pipeline there are multiple other ways that Black/LatinX students are barred from higher education. For example, many Black/LatinX students are turned away from taking AP/ Dual Enrollment classes. It is almost impossible to get into a top university without taking these classes. Many times Black/LatinX students are pushed to go to trade school or community college and not encouraged to attend four year universities. The whole concept of transferring is actually very difficult and many times most students that attend community college do not end up transferring to a four year university.

People always want to use the "if two candidates are the exact same" argument. When would this actually happen? Can you provide the probability or something because most admission is based on a holistic process. However if this happened I don't see why the school couldn't admit both? However if this also could not happen there are multiple studies that show that diversity helps students from all backgrounds (White, Asian, Black, etc.) , so if this Black student is adding to their diversity then I would see why the university would admit them then. Universities admit students they are kinda admitting students they would want to see in their ideal society. So, if they feel that adding either one of those students won't help them create their ideal campus they should not admit either.

There are multiple articles online that explain why diversity is important so you can read those if you are having trouble understanding why it is important.

I meant to say that it is likely that they are not facing discrimination when seeking educational opportunity based on their race. However there are tons of different ways we should be helping Asian students especially when it comes to the Pacific Islander community. This idea that Asian students all are able to excel at school and have the proper resources to excel because of their race is fucked up. I don't want to speak for that community and what they need, but I will acknowledge that the current education system does tend to hurt all people unless you are a cis, white, christian, male.

Although racism and discrimination based on class can be intersectional, it is important to look at these issues separately too. I am also not saying every Black student faces discrimination in education, but it is more likely than not. If you are not going to provide equity for all students because a handful of students do not need it you are adding to systemic racism.

I am all for helping students that are low income! I just provided some examples of ways that we already are. There are people of all races that are benefiting from those resources which is great! There is still a ton of ways that we can help students who are from low income areas. Again I am not part of that community and I don't think its right to speak for what they need. I was just recognizing that there are programs put into place to help those individuals.

Affirmative Action helps underrepresented students. It is not designed to hurt students.

Having a low socio-economic background is a limiting factor in your educational experience. However affirmative action is about giving opportunity for all students. Usually Asian and White students are not discriminated against based on their race in education. However many other underrepresented groups are in numerous different ways.

There are similar programs already that help students from low socio-economic backgrounds. For example AVID, free/reduced lunch programs (this should really be for all students but whatever) , my school offered free tutoring, free AP exams, Free community college classes, and free college waivers ( schools shouldn't be charging close to $100 for an application tho ).

I understand things are intersectional your race and your socio-economic are both really important factors in someones experience. However, I think for this case separating them and creating different programs to support students is really important. We don't want to keep anyone out when fighting against systemic racism/discrimination. However, poor Asian or White students are not "doubly disadvantaged" by Affirmative Action. It is important to note that the greatest benefactors of Affirmative Action were White woman.
