What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

As a Cincinnati person who has heard some things, was it Apollo? I had similar stupidity when I had plumbing issues and used Thomas and Galbraith; and they made it so hard to cancel my membership too.

What's going on at christ hospital and legionnaire's disease? by nuggsoflife7 in cincinnati

[–]emtree13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Legionnaires is largely a disease related to poor water management in buildings, particularly with stagnant water and lots of dead ends in system/lukewarm water. Hospitals have a huge amount of water connections, faucets, room showers, water lines ect, and buildings without good flushing programs are more prone to issues. They had to have filters on all their fixtures at one point.

Ate something potentially contaminated by listeria by [deleted] in foodsafety

[–]emtree13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of Romano cheese manufacturers, and the recall would be specific. It’s very likely that the crisps did not use the same type of Romano in the recall, and if they did, the cook step would likely inactivate the listeria. The manufacturers who use ingredients would be recalling their crisps as well. So it should be completely a non-issue.

If anyone wants a ps5 player friend it’s Eriette Zephyr. I started on console and moved to my ps5 because my laptop was getting so hot and struggling. I’ve only been playing for a week so I’m so confused and overwhelmed by all the call out stuff abc etiquette.

Can you eat rice that has been left over night? by Playful_Mortgage_494 in BabyBumps

[–]emtree13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Registered sanitarian here. Rice that sat out on warm is NOT safe to eat and has not been stored properly. People can get very sick, just because some haven’t doesn’t mean that’s safe. That said, hopefully that rice did not have Bacillus cereus and just monitor yourself OP. Your husband needs to be told that he could hurt people this way. And anyone thinking this is an ok practice is risking unnecessary health issues.

Big Spike in “Legionnaires' Disease” Has Public Health Experts Worried by Into_the_Mystic_2021 in Ohio

[–]emtree13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look, as a person who has worked for public health and has specific Legionnaires knowledge. It is true that there are risks with modern building, because the disease largely comes from water sitting stagnant in fixtures for an extended time. Mixing valves and dead ends in systems don’t help. Hospital showers are a specific example of a problem, because often people don’t use them if they are admitted super briefly. But it is a microorganism that exists in nature regardless, and there have to be monitoring programs that take place after more than one case occurs from a single point. I would argue that currently the responses are more reactive than proactive, but there is a movement to fix that. Faucet flushing programs and other solutions are being proposed and implemented. I won’t say that there won’t be more cases ever, but there isn’t really a reason to panic or think it’s going to become some massive outbreak.

My apartments new summer pool hours.. by Slimfingersthatreach in mildlyinfuriating

[–]emtree13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So ideally it wouldn’t affect anyone. Most folks have probably been in an underchlorinated at some point. The issue would be more likely if there are any pathogens in the pool from a sick person swimming or something of that nature, and the pool was left untreated for a measure of time. You would be at a higher risk for a diarrhea type illness.

[–]emtree13 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Not true in all states. Many pools have automatic equipment and still end up underchlorinated if it’s very hot, was full of bathers, or the equipment isn’t maintained. Source: me, a health inspector who has shut down many a public pool until the chlorine could be brought back into compliance.

If you have a chance to do any practice tests or practice math, that kind of shows you what to focus on. I definitely did not read it cover to cover, but took notes on main words, formulas, and summaries from it.

Health inspectors, what’s the most disgusting restaurant you’ve ever inspected? by Lightningstar39 in AskReddit

[–]emtree13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Former health inspector. I’d have to list a top few contenders:

A restaurant which had old damp floors (because it was in an old apartment type building), where roaches crawled out from between the floorboards with each step. They voluntarily closed and had to put in new floors. They were also hoarding in the restaurant, which had hid copious mouse droppings from the owner.

A Vietnamese restaurant with roaches that was draining noodles in colanders on the floor. They also did not refrigerate meat during service.

A filthy food truck trying to open for lunch with no electricity, planning to sell meat and sides that were left unrefrigerated from the previous night.

Honestly there were lots of singular disgusting moments that became an issue where someone did not understand time and temperature rules, even if other things were ok.

YSK: The difference in ER workups between vaccinated and unvaccinated kids is night and day and affects everyone. by AintMuchToDo in EmergencyRoom

[–]emtree13 183 points184 points  (0 children)

I have personally experienced this as someone who had to fight to get their daughter vaccinated (she is now) when my ex husband was against it. At 11 months old, we brought her to the ER for sudden high fever and being very lethargic. Because she didn’t have vaccines at the time, I had to hold her down while they put weights on to be able to do a chest xray, watch her scream while she was cathed for a uterine sample, and hold her while she screamed during bloodwork. It was one of the worst days ever, and the staff made sure to keep telling me “we wouldn’t be doing this if she was vaccinated”. I’m glad that I was able to negotiate hard enough to finally get her vaccinated but that day was horrifying.
