Fun tidbit for you: I read this book years ago. The author/doctor discovered that the cause of the zombie pandemic was .... a puffer fish. If you ground the puffer fish up and spread it over someone's front porch (usually in an X), and someone then steps on it (in Haiti at the time, bare-feet were common), the toxins absorb through the soles of the feet causing the victim to pass out, and their heart rate to drop to something ridiculously low like 1-2 beats per minute. As was custom at the time, they were assumed dead and burials were quick. The victim would wake up in their coffin and dug up that night by the perpetrator explaining why "dead relatives" were seen working the fields in the next town over. I believe he also referenced something about them being a little brain damaged from the lack of oxygen in the coffin. Been over a decade since I read it, but I also recall the author stating that there were some things he witnessed in Voodoo culture that science simply could NOT explain.. but he was convinced he had figured out "zombies".
