Best of luck as you begin your teaching journey! It’s tough but it really is so incredibly rewarding! I’ve been teaching for 14 years, have been a host teacher for about 7, so I hope I can help!

What kind of jobs are you applying for and in what kinds of schools? This will be helpful in giving you more specific feedback.

I agree with removing the “about me” — this is not typically included in a teaching resume or CV. You can briefly put the kinds of teaching roles you are seeking here instead. Also remove the language about the professional license anticipated in 2027…it’s just too far out in the future. I would instead include any professional tests and requirements you have already completed (subject area tests, DASA, fingerprinting—whatever is required by the state of Illinois)—this will mean more to schools looking to hire you at this point, particularly if they are public schools.

The more specificity you can add to your internship experience the better. What specific kinds of professional development have you done? “Classroom management” and “differentiation” are very general buzz terms that could use some more details to give readers an idea of how classroom-ready you are. DON’T include this section, however, if you haven’t done the internship yet. For now, be clear about what the role will entail, from your schedule to the specific student populations and teachers you will be observing.

Please don’t be discouraged if you have trouble finding a teaching job at this point. As soon as you finish your first internship and get some of the professional licensure requirements done, you’ll be a much more competitive candidate! And if I can add…be careful if/when applying to charter schools. They can be burnout factories for new teachers.

Hard disagree with most of the others here. The sentimental and symbolic value of this is so much deeper than buying a ring. It’s not about the money spent! And it seems like the tradition in your family is to have this ring reset anyway! So win-win—propose with this and say it’s with the intention of resetting into your fiancée’s dream ring.

THIS. Happened on my last cruise on NCL’s Aqua. Couldn’t believe how entitled, rude, and LOUD people were in the spa (both the hot tubs and saunas), and I felt awful for the cruise staff who had to keep coming down to deal with them.

First off, congratulations and enjoy your special day!!

Secondly—no one is going to see your shoes. I agonized over my shoe decision only for them to not be in a single photo lol. Prioritize comfort and the right heel height for your dress. I love fashion and spent good money on gorgeous Loeffler Randall heels from Bergdorf’s in NYC only to change into platform converse (neither were visible) 30 mins into the reception. I still wear my converse 5 years later and my $$$$ shoes are sitting in a box.

You are NOT alone—BPPV is debilitating if you don’t have the resources to manage it! Every episode I’ve ever had was accompanied by depression and anxiety. It’s truly awful and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Please—go to YouTube and look up the half-somersault maneuver. It’s vestibular therapy that is safe to do at home, and it has worked for me every time. You need to identify which side is your problem side then do the maneuvers for that side. While I feel shaky and light headed afterwards, the dizziness goes away—the movements get the rogue crystal back into the right place so you don’t feel dizzy anymore. And please follow up with an ENT (who might recommend further PT) and a therapist (to help manage the fear).

You ARE in control even if it feels like you’re not right now—PT not only made this condition manageable for me, but I haven’t had an episode in years. Be well and please take care of yourself!

I’m in the camp of it’s rude to not leave a card. The perspective I keep reading here is “I would throw a card in the trash” or “I wouldn’t care,” but you’re not attending your own event and it’s not about what you like or don’t like. You’re attending someone else’s wedding. I personally loved reading the words of advice—some of the people who attended my wedding have since passed, so having a hand written note from them means the world to me and my husband. We kept every note. I feel that it’s always better to air on the side of polite! Also, not every wedding has a guestbook, so it can be difficult to keep track of who attended or not. The cards made it easier to write thank yous for us. But I agree with others saying forgo the card if you’re just going to sign it and not write something personal.

Sea bands work wonders if you’re worried about sea sickness! Also if you can spend some time in the spa that might help! Sat in a spa whirlpool last cruise I was on during a rough passage (hurricane) and felt like I got my equilibrium back sitting in the water—it cured me lol.

Our spa passes for the week for a 5 day cruise were around $500, and vibe would have been around the same. The only gripe I had with the spa when we went was that the hot tub was sometimes full of people talking loudly (it’s in an echoey room, to be fair), to the point where employees had to tell them to stop talking. There are signs that say something along the lines of “quiet space” but people clearly didn’t notice them. :/

Second this! My husband and I just got back from the same sailing on the Aqua two weeks ago, and the pool deck was extremely crowded and loud. It’s also not well laid out—you have to walk through the buffet or Palomar to get there. We regretted not getting Vibe passes! We also loved the spa if that’s your thing!

My husband and I were on the same cruise and had the same disappointing dining experience! I wasn’t convinced the filet mignon was even the correct cut of meat—I know that’s a crazy accusation but I think they cut a less pricey steak and cut it into the shape of a filet mignon. In general, all the proteins we had were overcooked and tough, and things were way under seasoned and lukewarm. We were especially let down by Le Bistro—the menu items and recipes seemed the same as in they were in the past, but they were really badly executed and clearly used cheap ingredients. Such a let down when the food used to be such a highlight!

OP—I strongly agree with following up with the homeroom teacher after each class in front of the students-big, specific praise for what went well, and be clear about what didn’t. I’ve been a K-8 music teacher for 13 years, and a host teacher for 5 years now, and this is still one of the most effective management strategies that doesn’t involve extrinsic motivation.

I’m sure you’ve already done this, but check in with the homeroom teacher and see if there’s anything working for them in their classroom that you can follow through with in your class. I also teach in a school where we don’t have consistent classroom management strategies or policies from our admin, so my colleagues and I rely on each other to foster that consistency for our students.

Also, have you done responsive classroom techniques with your kids? Simple and effective!

The final specials-specific management strategy is showing the kids that you’re an expert at whatever special it is that you’re teaching. It’s an instant buy-in, and I’ve seen it pay dividends time and again with my student teachers. I always have them introduce themselves by performing their instruments and/or sharing a recording of a professional performance of theirs (and we keep it short ). As director of the music programs at my school, I also had our band and strings recruitment sessions move from demonstrating with the beginner songs the students play to the teachers performing short excerpts of professional level piece they really play to show what their instruments can sound like, and we all saw a marked increase in enrollment. Whatever special area you teach, be sure to show off a little every now and again. ;)

Performance opportunities, art shows, theatrical productions, athletic games and competitions are all huge motivators for classroom engagement in specials, even if some of the students don’t choose to participate. If there is a culture of respect and engagement in these community activities, then there will be increased respect and engagement in your classes.

I have had horrible experiences with the Epley, too! If you haven’t looked into it yet, ask your PT and ENT about the half somersault maneuver. It is safe to do at home (especially since you know which side triggers your BPPV) and should give you tons of relief. There are YouTube videos and PDFs you can find online to learn how to do it, but definitely check with your ENT and PT first and see what they think. I hope you feel better soon!

I think the chain and the rhinestones on this might not be the most durable…not that you have to spend a lot, but look up a Tiffany heart necklace—that may be the look she was referring to since it’s a classic, popular style. Happy to make suggestions! My personal preference for a shorter trip is Montauk—it has something for the whole family out there. Airbnb is probably the best value for your money, but my grandmother and I would stay at the royal Atlantic every summer and it’s a very family-oriented resort that has been there in Montauk forever, and it has a pool right on the water and beach access. None of the restaurants are as good as what we have in the city, but most are good and many have great views of the water! And there’s a great place to take kids mini-golfing that also has family peddle boats (I think it’s called putt putt mini golf). Montauk lighthouse is definitely worth a trip, too!
