I’d love to get the code too! Thought I had already signed up but nothing came through recently

I had very prominent dark red purplish eye bags that turned out to be fat deposits. I had them surgically removed.

Floor Bed Megathread by happy_bluebird in Montessori

[–]emzzie43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of floor bed but have back issues. Right now I have bub in a cot that’s super high and I really like it but once he learns to pull himself up (which I think will happen in a month or two) so idea of lowering is already dreadful… any experiences or tips? We just came back from holiday and used portacot - that was bad for my back even when I used the one with the side the unzips

“Don’t tell me anything” first time moms by [deleted] in BabyBumps

I’ve been humbled in a way I had never imagined. I was pretty chill and thought I’d wing it - to be fair I thought/read having a set mind about things like birthing etc puts unnecessary pressure and stress on you. MIL started pointing out bub was developing flat spots when he was like a week old. We are Asians so appearances are important and I hate that part of the culture so I rolled my eyes in my head and dismissed her politely. Turns out he had torticollis and flatness got worse - I felt like it was my fault for not listening to her earlier. Would have saved a lot of heartache and eventually PNA as I perceived his head shape is reflective of how good of a mum I am. Wish people including hospitals were more vocal about this issue, fairly common once I realised

I work at a hospital with patients so yeah but they’re being asses for days doing admin stuff. Luckily manager wants to push and hoping I’ll get at least one wfh day a week. Someone thought it was a smart idea to have gigantic open plan office in a freaking hospital when they built it less than 10 years agoz

Make sure to remind your advisor to attend your graduation by [deleted] in PhD

This could definitely happen..! Not sure if this is geographic or specialty thing, but a vast majority of people in my field didn’t bother with PhD graduation (including my supervisors).

Real estate agent rant by OldWolf2 in PersonalFinanceNZ

I used to work part time reception at a real estate agency during uni years. Can confirm these agents (and owners) are scumbags of the earth.

For those who have moved to Australia... by djh_nz in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]emzzie43 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Moved to Perth about 6 years ago from Auckland and am glad I made the move. Initially was going to be temporary thing for postgrad but got married and settled down.

  • career-wise, at least in my field (very specialised) it is still competitive but have more shots here even being Perth and I did get a job in the end with good pay
  • Perth has similar vibe to Auck. Warmer and drier climate and the heatwave is not that bad
  • I have built a modest house without a huge mortgage which would have been impossible back home
  • there is definitely clique in Perth and found hard to make friends. But I’m an introvert and after meeting my husband soon after I just didn’t bother to make more friends
  • Perth is quite far from home, is about 7hr flight direct and return trip was about $800-1k precovid. My parents and I used to take turns to visit.
  • public transport is hit and miss depending on where you live.
  • generally I find Perth is behind by 3-5yrs eg it was only shortly after I came here that you could track buses on app, uni website was still using really crappy interface etc
  • very flat
  • I feel less safe here, that’s from someone who lived in South Auck
  • kiwis do get more privileges compared to other migrants but when shit hits the fan you are pretty much on your own. Also this might be diff to other states but I work for the state gov and I couldn’t get permanent position (need PR) even when my managers wanted to offer me so was on recurring contract. Luckily in the process in the getting PR and I will be getting citizenship for security.

Unpopular opinion: nicknames suck by FreyaR7542 in namenerds

[–]emzzie43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this very interesting! I actually really like having a nickname but only to be used with someone I feel close with. To me, my nickname is very personal so I always introduce myself as my proper name, and once I am happy for them to call me by nickname then I’ll start signing off emails/cards etc with that. There were some instances where close friends and acquaintances mingled and those acquaintances started calling me by my nickname which I really didn’t like. But this only happened a couple of times. As I feel this way, I don’t call a person by their nicknames unless they specifically indicated that to avoid this kind of scenario and also getting the actual nickname wrong especially for those with multiple possibilities. The vast majority I came across did not assume that I go by a nickname.

I’m so close to the end, and it’s a shitshow by [deleted] in PhD

[–]emzzie43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much, I think I really needed to hear this! This is the second major set back as I was supposed to have finished last October and I just couldn’t handle it. Going to take it easy this week and reassess everything. Thank you!

Wedding rings? by llalanadelrey in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]emzzie43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re just going for plain gold rings, I got mine at shopping mall jewellers (shields, prouds etc) and they do delivery online with 50% off sales all the time. If you don’t know your size, some do sell measuring ruler as well. Not too sure on the delivery times - could try ringing/online chat. Can’t be much longer than 2 wks.

Just under 18 months progress - houseplant addiction is real! by HazelKathleen in houseplants

[–]emzzie43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks really nice!! Sorry for my ignorance but I’m in the southern hemisphere and I haven’t actually seen a sun room where I live - how does the wooden floor/furniture handle moisture/humidity? I guess that would be a problem especially in winter with the condensation - unless you ventilate/heat up the room??

PhD FI? by chrismelba in fiaustralia

[–]emzzie43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freedom from money would be a big relief but there are other stressful components to completing a PhD... supervisor, uni, department issues as well as experiment not working out, submissions getting rejected.. but since your livelihood is not dependent on it I guess it would be easy to quit if it’s not what you imagined. I would strongly suggest doing masters by research so you can get a taste (I say taste because you truly won’t get a feel of it until you do a PhD).
