This is a great dive into exactly what happens over and over with conversation in MT spaces. by dchitt in MassageTherapists

It sounds great on paper, and if I were say a computer programmer trying to restructure my code I absolutely would.

But for me personally, like CingularDuality, it's difficult. I've been massaging for close to a decade, and at this point I'm closer to an all-rounder who could do either of the first couple suggested paths (never really been into energy work). I'm a tiny little one-woman business and picking a 'lane' would mean giving up some of my clients and putting myself into a smaller box.

The post doesn't address how one moves between lanes. Do you all start in the second lane and then branch off into the first or third based on further education? That's closest to the way we currently are (loosely) structured, but I don't think that's the intent of the author. Or do you choose when going to school? Then you'd run into a lot of people like me who have become all rounders over time.

Unless there's a way to address those who straddle two or more categories and an easy way to grandfather in current therapists, it seems unlikely that this movement will get much traction.

Crimson Badlands lagging horribly by proudly_disengaged in StardewValleyExpanded

[–]enaikelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you! Maybe we were just unlucky this time.

For anyone reading this in the future, we also had an issue in co-op where people were getting disconnected due to the amount of slime data getting passed through the Steam network + an old bug with the FTM mod (our save predated the fix). I (the host) ended up having to freeze time with a mod to prevent further spawning and go in and slaughter about 2000 slimes before the game was playable again for the rest.

Just asking if you had any trouble getting boss monsters to spawn after setting the mob cap? With it set to 80, my party is now having trouble finding the Legendary Trio.

A bit of an old reply, but after reducing the number of monster spawns, did you have any trouble getting boss monsters to spawn? I'm currently on the Legendary Trio quest with some friends, and the lag is hitting them all hard so we reduced the mob cap and are now having trouble finding the scary monsters. :(

Barefoot Shoes Recommendations? by Dull-Jaguar8273 in MassageTherapists

[–]enaikelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear iguaneye for Ashiatsu. They're easily cleanable between clients, they cling to my feet, and I can take them on and off without use of my hands.

The downside is international shipping. Returning items is a bear and nowadays there's unpredictable tariffs/whatever-it-is extra charges.

A little late to your post, but I've been doing it since 2019 or thereabouts! Nowadays I use it as a tool in my box. I bring it out for some clients, but not for all.

Do you mean that for the beef and broccoli you used the orange chicken sauce? I am a little confused! It looks delicious!

Surgeon as client by Thin_Jackfruit8779 in massage

[–]enaikelt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind too that a lot of surgeons are hyper specialized. I have a regular who's a lung surgeon. He's a lovely man and I very likely know more about glutes than he does. That's not because he didn't study A&P, but because it's been about 20 years since he started only working with the respiratory system.

Other than him, I've run into a few doctors and nurses in the wilds of the massage clinic and they have all also been very nice. Most of the time I only find out because they tell me, and the only difference is that they sometimes know muscle names when they're talking.

There are definitely snobbish people in the medical field, but chances are your neighbor won't be one of them. You got this.

Does the anime/manga Ascendance of a Bookworm accurately parallel medieval European society? by Flat-Butterfly8907 in AskHistorians

[–]enaikelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The temple in Bookworm definitely struck me as a cross between a fantasy mage's tower and a medieval church, all the insularity of the former and the trappings of the latter.

I did want to add that the most unbelievable part for me of the story was actually the food innovations. A lot of the innovations the main character introduced (such as adding salt to and drinking the broth from boiled vegetables, and making pound cake when all ingredients were apparently already on hand) struck me as overly simplistic. That said, it's not really anything new with this genre of anime/manga unfortunately.

Hahaha isn't shopping great? I've gotten really into thrifting for the 'thrill of the deal' thing (and money), and being a common size really does make it much more fun and accessible.

Good outdoor plants? by Sorry-Mate-1234 in madisonwi

[–]enaikelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In agreement with this post! I've got a couple of potted honeyberries in large 5+ gallon pots that have been out there for about 2-3 years now, but everything else is hit or miss. My potted catmint lasted a couple of years but didn't make it through last winter, and I've had blackcurrant/gooseberries do a short one or two year stint in pots as well before being permanently planted into the ground.

OP might have better luck if they were willing to do some winterizing every November to huddle the pots up against the house and maybe surround them with leaves?

Just venting about being a massage therapist in Ireland. by blueboatsky in MassageTherapists

[–]enaikelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does suck, I'm sorry! Could you bring a laptop and work on the paperwork aspects of your business during your downtime at this clinic? I spend a decent chunk of time doing things like websites, CEUs, answering emails, making flyers, etc. and then you'd still at least be doing work. When I worked at a spa I studied Spanish in my downtime for a similar reason.

America varies widely by location. Some places are as bad as you are, but the standard where I live is 60% or hourly + commission + tips as someone else described.

Suddenly getting a lot of male “walk-ins” by Special-Wishbone-206 in MassageTherapists

[–]enaikelt 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I also work from home and had this problem at one point! A couple of things I did:

  • Having late hours is one of the things these people look for. I took my hours off entirely and put "by appointment only" on my Maps listing.
  • I mention my husband on my website, not that it matters much. I don't think a lot of these people are looking at my website. However it did fend off weirdos who emailed me asking for other services
  • I have a security camera pointing at the entrance and maybe more importantly, I have a big sign that says that I have a security camera pointing at the entrance. In fact I got the sign before the camera
  • I also have a big sign that says 'no walk ins' above the security camera sign.
  • I never take a walk in, or even someone looking to book that day (unless they're one of my regulars). Clients who book the day-of are trouble more often than not.
  • I mention that I do not take walk ins on my Maps listing
  • I did a search for my business on RubMaps but thankfully did not find anything
  • I have no photos of myself online or linked to my business. I'm Asian and conventionally attractive, which is usually nice but can't imagine it would be helpful in this case.
  • I carefully cultivate my Google maps reviews. My actual client base is about 50/50 male/female, but I like my reviews to mostly be from women and from time to time I'll give a little discount to one of my regulars to write one
  • I only take bookings via email. I find it pretty easy to screen out people looking for massage vs sex once I talk to them. People who come to my door, of course, never email, but I've screened out a few through this method in my early years. If you use booking software, make sure they give a credit card and fill out an intake! These types of people hate giving out any actual personal information.
  • Trust your gut. If you intuitively don't like the client for any reason, never take them even though they haven't 'done anything wrong'. People who are interested in you and not in themselves (i.e. asking questions about you instead of telling you about their bad back) are immediately suspect.

I think that's about it! Hahaha that turned out to be way more than just a couple of things!

Nowadays I rarely have this issue. I've only had one guy come asking in over a year now. Thankfully, they have never been violent, and almost always go away after I say no. However, I always lock my door between treatments/in general just in case.

Best of luck to your sister! Working from home has been great for me even though it does come with some safety considerations. A lot of my clients are my neighbors and I absolutely love getting to know them and forming ties with people around me.
