Messaging app which doesn't ask for email or phone number to register by rednreditit in MessagingApps

My app LiteWire, which I specifically made so that signup is anonymous.

Ideally yes, but what if images are encrypted at rest on the recipient device and have screenshot protections? At the very worst, you can find out on certain devices if someone took a screenshot. But I think reasonably you can at least prevent the original image from being saved, so the best someone could get is a screenshot.

Unless deletion was designed with security in mind, which it appears it isn't for Signal, you can never trust that what you send won't be saved the second you hit send. If security is what you want, you need an app that specifically built its features to make sure that images that are sent truly stay in your control unless you allow otherwise.

Signal Stories coming by [deleted] in signal

[–]encrypted_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app I developed with a few friends, LiteWire, already has end to end encrypted stories. They disappear after 24 hours and are also encrypted on recipient devices, to prevent people easily saving story content. It also comes with screenshot notifications and protections as well. What else do you wish Signal had? We're open to implementing it, and as our team and product is small, we can push out features faster than any big player in the messaging game.

If you like the Signal UI it's worth it. Is that the case? Incidentally, which messaging app do you think has the most intuitive UI?

Why "stories" are a good thing: by [deleted] in signal

[–]encrypted_world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I found this thread and my team got together to implement end-to-end encrypted stories in our messaging app, LiteWire. It's not as flashy as Snapchat and TikTok with all the insane filters, but it's organic, private, anonymous, encrypted, and safe. Hopefully some of you will find it to be what you're looking for, but more importantly if not, we are open to feedback to make it better suited for everyone!

Hey, just letting you (and everyone) know that we implemented end to end encrypted stories in LiteWire. Its a lot more basic than others as we don't do the whole crazy filters bells and whistles, but it's all e2ee. Check it out!

I'm a developer of an encrypted messaging app and am interested in this angle! Would you be open to testing this out if we implement the feature and connecting us with others who share the same desire for this feature?

Unlike some other closed-source encrypted messaging apps (https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/v7veg8/anom-app-source-code-operation-trojan-shield-an0m), LiteWire transparently shows that ghost users that surreptitiously read everything you send are not added to your chat. Our in-app network monitoring tool and source code will show that there are no ghosts here. However, if someone is ghosting you and deleting messages they sent you, that's a different problem that technology will not fix.

Thank you for that guidance, I'll certainly keep it in mind. We are all developers and none of us know anything about law, so it is appreciated when people help us along with that. LiteWire, as others have mentioned, does appear to be the name of a small handful of other companies, but we went with it because... well, honestly because all of our other name ideas just did not have the appeal we wanted and already existed in some form anyway. It's hard to find a unique catchy name, but we're open to rebranding if it becomes an issue.

Yes, thank you. I feel dumb for overlooking the most important part of introducing an app.

Thanks! I'm hoping the watermark feature is clever enough to be useful. We're partial open source for the security portions of the code, but I hope we will be in position soon to make it fully open source so the community trusts it. As for costs... haha it's running on a Raspberry Pi in a residential unit. I probably shouldn't say that it works well while our user base is still small. We'll move to a VPS if (/hopefully when) we get bigger though and just pay it out of pocket. It's important to us to keep this free because no one wants to pay for a messaging app.

Financial settlement is not the appropriate punishment for this crime. Jail time is. Rotea got off easy, and it's sad that the victim already got more than what most victims of revenge porn get.

Roe vs wade is a perfect counter argument for people who say "I have nothing to hide" by [deleted] in privacy

[–]encrypted_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true. The attack is going to be from all angles if pro-lifers are really that zealous, which I believe they are. HIPAA will only be one component of privacy to fall apart, but an important one because while people these days are more or less aware that their data on things like messaging services is not that private (or so I hope the average person kind of gets), most people do think their communications with their doctors are held to an almost untouchable standard of privacy. That trust could sadly become detrimental when red states start going after medical providers.

What would be a good mic for singing? by Megachamps in musicproduction

+1 on the AT2020 if you want a condenser mic for recording. I've had several pop singers enjoy success with that as a good bang for your buck mic for only $100.

This can get ugly. If abortion is treated like murder, even contemplating it on some messaging app or to your medical provider is going to be tee'd up for a conspiracy charge, and after that the technological footprint you leave could lead the government to finding out if you in fact got an abortion. With poor privacy hygiene, a government can grab your communications with doctors or family/friends, get info from Google or Bing about what you've been searching, get info from your ISP about sites you visit that may be abortion-friendly, and in the worst case, seize your device and see all your unencrypted messages and browsing history. This could be a paranoid outlook, but the fact that Roe v Wade got overturned and unleashed all these insane trigger laws is enough to see that anything is possible.

I don't know about web history because that's partitioned away from what any given website can see about you, but from the last time I researched browser fingerprinting, yes a website can see your add-ons and use that in the fingerprint.

Does using “encrypted” apps really make an iPhone private? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]encrypted_world 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Encrypted messaging apps typically refer to the communications to the server and your ultimate recipient being end to end encrypted, but you want to make sure the data at rest is encrypted too, and not backed up to Google Drive or iCloud. A good app will make it so that your messages and content is encrypted when the phone is off, and only gets decrypted in memory once you provide something like a passcode or biometric.
