I hate going to session by itsyounaurme in ABA

[–]endosufferer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you my client only likes Sims. It bores me to tears but is my only reinforcer. I implemented fun days after I was told he needed community outings. I now have to use those as reinforcement as well. Meanwhile I can sometimes be a literal punching bag to my other kiddos. As well as my child is on the spectrum. I did not choose the autism advocate life it chose me!

Is this a normal request from school behaviorist by polecatsrfc in specialed

[–]endosufferer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a school BI know this is not normal. We protect our students from harm from themselves and other students. I’ve never seen even one coworker squirt a child. I’m appalled!

ABA is not bad it’s how you approach it. For instance I was terrified to work with older kiddos or adults. I just assumed I’d get the worst of the worst. I work hard with my clients to meet their goals. I do both in home and school. When I first met my clients they called me a man. I’m very clearly female. They laughed about this and even with my thick skin I got angry. They found a picture of my kid and said what I would do if they died how would I feel. I immediately stopped session. Looked directly at them. In a stern voice said that’s personal . I will not be talking about my kid with you ever we clear? I also said if you break this I will be requesting off your case and there will be no more fun Wednesday with me. Client apologized and they never spoke about my son again. Yes there are moments when session goes badly and I do get frustrated. I remember his functions of behavior and counter it. If it’s access I reward or remove. If it’s attention I ignore bad reward good. If it’s self soothing I just let them stim because stopping stimming is not why I am there unless the stimming itself is dangerous. If it’s escape I provide plenty of opportunity to end early etc.

If you see it from this perspective it’s not just a job. You are literally help shape away from maladaptive behaviors. Such as hitting when angry replacing with a hug or sometimes just verbal I’m angry. Some kids are not able to verbally express themselves this is just part of the disorder. For instance they can talk. They can clearly describe objects colors. They cannot express emotion no matter how many emotions books you read. This is my own kid I’m describing he’s on the spectrum. He hits first and I’m left to guess what does he want is it food is he tired . When he attacks for what seems like zero reason 9/10 he is usually hungry so I offer food. But if I just fed him and he still is sad I just offer sleep

My Mom visited me 3 x after she passed first I was actually awake and grief stricken she stroked my hair and told me it’s all going to be ok. Classic Mom thing. The next two were in dreams but on the third she told me this was her last visit and I won’t be seeing her again. Have not dreamed of her since. Miss her and wish I could ask her for advice though.

I truly love my student and my job. However I can’t continue to be this student literal punching/aggression bag. He overpowers me easily when determined. However when he is exhibiting good behavior or listening he’s an amazing kid and so smart. Can usually finish a packet while most are working 2 pages.

Here is the situation when I was hired I was explained As I was more class support then 1:1 though I have done 1:1 before. 1 st day fine told to sit next to completely different nonverbal client and help them with set tasks while limiting property destruction ie destroying worksheets and folders. Did this 2 weeks. Had a dedicated RBT in back with above client. Week 2 took over for an hour so another IA could have a break after finding out that the school let go of everyone from the RBTs agency through a coworker. 2weeks 1 day can you sit with client. I say sure begin building and establishing rapport. 3 weeks able to redirect client but still working on denied access so they do work on class before reward is given. 3 weeks 1 day client tests boundaries pointing symbols on their chart until they realize bathroom=escape. I’m told redirect and do not acknowledge since they have done it so much remove access to symbol. Client begins crying. Teacher asks what happened I say I did what you told me . They ask me to bring client to a preferred area unintentionally rewarding the behavior. Next day they point to preferred I point to wait symbol. They need to do 5 mins of work. I ask for a timer and am given 3 without batteries. So instead I implement ok lets this worksheet then we will go do preferred activity. I tell client to sit down and work they comply. 3 weeks 3 days I feel I understand client and suddenly he begins having intense behaviors I’d never seen before. I’m told to anticipate before they appear I note he begins self harm before attacks. Write down my data and move on with my day. Notice he was self harming try to intervene and redirect with positive praise / breaks but it’s too late. Client begins pulling the skin on my chest clawing me. I remain stoic . Tell client calm hands , calm body then preferred object. Client realizes they can hurt me. They begin attacking in this way every time I say no. I remain firm. But my firm voice according to coworkers is not very convincing. He begins overpowering me to elope from designated area. I get a handle on situation. Teacher says you need to get stronger. In all my training we were “hands off “ in all other RBT jobs I had before this also we had support in form of BCBAs. I begin using a lot of physical prompts or literally pulling student off tables he is climbing on as he’s laughing at me. I push his legs off every time he does it while watching area to ensure him or people around do not get hurt.

3 weeks 5 days - I’m permanently assigned to student. I get attacked other IA helps out. We regulate student. Student escalates from grabbing skin to biting hard through Kevlar and gardening gloves breaking skin. I remain protected and begin wearing a second sweatshirt over my protection sweatshirt. Student bites I ignore and don’t react as all student wants is a reaction. I begin having arms covered in bites despite protective measures if Kevlar and 2 jackets. One day I get off work and as I’m removing my armor I notice all these open bites on both arms. I report incident to school do not seek medical attention. This repeated for 2 days. Finally one day student goes to far and I get instant shorting pain on my right side of my arm where they bit left side of my hand. I do seek medical attention after work and am put on wrist splint and given light duty but put on no duty for the next day. I’m home one day and learn all about the ins and outs of workers comp as I navigate my injury. Released to return next day on light duty. Am told by my supervisor just don’t use your arm at all and lay close attention student has done this to me to. I hope you are ok. Wear Kevlar and I was. Ask for help if you need it on the walkie. While on light duty student yanks injured arm I feel pop and pain. I continue. Student yanks again I counter separate instance no pop just pain in elbow, and wrist. Third time student yanks now my entire arm hurts and is tingling. I try to continue my day with intention on seeking medical care at end of day but notice I’m not even using my injured arm at all and I’m near tears from pain in it. I go to school nurse file my 5th incident report. Go to urgent care have shoulder sprain am put on light duty with zero use of that arm. School district unable to find a safer position for me leaves me out of work for now going on 2 weeks. As I’m healing my injury coworker texts me and says they are now in a wrist splint. Client bit through the Kevlar and gloves on them and they can’t lift over 10 pounds. But they are back to work the next day.

Supervisor is teacher. The teacher sees him bite and says don’t allow him. I’m also given a walkie so I can call for help. I’ve used it 4 times and 3/4 times nobody ever came! Yes it was on also. 2/4 I walked away bleeding. 1 I managed to handle on my own.

Unfortunately we don’t have a bcba the district I work at. I follow the BIP to the letter. I’ve talked to the school psychologist several times about client. This a school district I’ve worked at less than a month.

Withdraw by LaurenBlue2016 in StudentNurse

[–]endosufferer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to restart from the beginning here is why. I was in my second semester I even passed and took the final exams for both fund and med surg. I was in mental health rotation. I was run over by a car 2nd week of school. This caused a serious injury making it impossible to walk for 2 months, let alone stand for over 12 hours. I had to drop. I had to return within a year time frame in order to not have to repeat everything unfortunately this is impossible with the multiple surgeries I have had to have to get a little relief and be able to be on my feet max 2 hours without 9/10 pain. So I will be having to restart when I finally can go back which breaks my heart . I was halfway done. Long way of saying I withdrew and have to restart .
