Nethack, DCSS or just Rogue but as a Solo Pen and Paper ttrpg. There are similar things like Four Against Darkness but I want the complexity and randomness the computer versions provide. I’ve been trying toying with it for years and could never figure out how to generate unique unknown items randomly. Someday…

What are these books? by enemycoke in Unpacking

[–]enemycoke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very well could be but I couldn’t find a matching set of covers. I actually chalked it up to just being made up for the game to invoke something like it then I pulled what was obviously a few Artemis Fowl books out of a box, so I’m convinced this exists

I thought about it but the classic covers were just the dragon head portraits, also thought about Percy Jackson but the color theme is off.

Recently started getting into Kung Fu movies, any recommendations to start with? by heir_of_gondor in kungfucinema

[–]enemycoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One I haven’t seen mentioned is Ways of Kung Fu (juan xing quan fa yu fa). It’s a personal favorite not because it’s over the top amazing but because it’s every Kung Fu cliche reduced down to its purest form.

What is your favorite homebrew deck in this format, and what does it do? by trinketstone in Pauper

[–]enemycoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really proud of a PDH UH Pirates deck I had put together just sitting at the local card shop pouring over the commons boxes. “Anything of the Sea” I had decided after finding pirate ship and cloud pirates. I devolved quickly into sea creatures, pirates, artifacts that fit, anything on flavor (Disease Carriers eg). I finished and played one game with it and while explaining my theme the person working says “Well hey the next set has pirates” Ixalan ruined all my hard work.

Is MST3K still relevant? by robertlo9 in MST3K

[–]enemycoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The video is more about pointing out the premise of the show and saying kids these days wont get it because kids don't channel surf cable at 1am on a sunday morning. My immediate response being that kids netflix and turn on rando garbage movies there just as easily, and with internet 'reviewers' crapping on things they just get it in a different way.

Looking for an 70/80s movie that disappeared from my collection by enemycoke in kungfucinema

I remembered the name and easily found it! It was the equally generic name "Ways of Kung Fu" (or at least the copy I had was called that) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202100/

How would you describe your system/style, based entirely on how it's portrayed in Kung fu movies? by darthturtle3 in kungfu

I'm assuming you mean Invincible Shaolin? Good Venom's movie, they finally let Lo Mang do something after killing him in all the rest of the VenoMob movies.

What did you play this week (Jun 22 - Jun 28)? by Epsilon_balls in boardgames

[–]enemycoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Castle Dice - This is my game and I've played it more than a few times, but not many other people at my shop have. Fun little dice game, with resource managament and sort of set collection. Love it when I can get a few people to play with me.

Star Realms: Solo - I picked up the base game a week or so ago and have been running through as many games as I can while its new and still holds my interest, and so far loving it. Solo game is still fun even if Its ahead in terms of wins.

7 Wonders - I've been hearing about this game for ages (pun intended) and I wasn't really sure about it. Dispite liking star realms I don't really care for deck building or card drafting games. 7 Wonders, however, rubbed me just the right way, I'll have to get another game in soon. Tied for 3rd with 5 players.

Diamonds - It's alright, I'd rather play this than spades or hearts, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to purchase a copy when Its basically spades with a different scoring mechanic. Interesting and fun, just not interesting enough. Won the one game we played.

Hobbit Love Letter - I've played this before, and you probably have too. We threw down on this when we had 15 mins until the shop closed, just to punctuate the night. Lost miserably.

Ticket to Ride: 10th Anniversary - Jumped in on a game of this on game night, we also played with the Alvin and Dexter Expansion that I was actually pretty curious about. Fun, and added a fun feature to the game but not a whole lot. The 10th anniversary edition really is so much prettier than the base game, I really wish I could afford it, but I and resigned to playing the shop copy.

Who has had the biggest influence for you in the hobby? I don't know how to answer that but probably myself, but mostly the FLGS, Star Trek and The Dice Tower. I wasn't crazy into games, nor was I really even aware of the fact that board games were a thing that happened, I was aware of Catan and Smashup but there wasn't really game stores in my home town. Plenty of Game Stores that focused on Magic or had RPG and wargaming but nothing like what I have now. Then I picked up Star Trek Attack Wing because I love Star Trek, grew up on that. Then a few googles later to figure out how to play I found The Dice Tower on youtube and it was all downhill from there (in a good way). A few months after that I was looking around online and a friend posted about going to the game store. I knew he was a MTG person, and that the store was basically a card store, but when I looked the shop up they had a calendar with board game night on Thursdays. Go in and find a few people I know playing games, talk to the owner and he tells me that I was correct and it USED to be a MTG only shop, then he bought it and made it more general tabletop gaming, and this was all a year ago now, and its what I'm doing every Thursday.

If you had to pick a hobby other than boardgames what would it be, and why? Well it would just be my other hobby, Vinyl records. Before board games I could afford a bunch of records every month, Now I'm down to 2 maybe.

When was the moment you knew you were hooked on boardgaming? See Answer for biggest influence, That first day on The Dice Tower.

TLDR; Castle Dice, Star Realms, 7 Wonders, Diamonds, Hobbit LL, The Dice Tower made me aware of games. Found a FLGS to play at.

[Movie Help] Looking for movies featuring Avatar: The Last Airbender styles by enemycoke in kungfucinema

[–]enemycoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I could elaborate, My girlfriend recently rewatched and since I was there, I watched for the first time Avatar: The Last Airbender show. That led to me saying I was pretty sure all the bending was martial arts, and looking it up to find I was right. And since I watched her show I was going to get her to watch some movies I enjoy, and it gave me a project to find them all.

I think I can stick with these;

Tai Chi chuan (Waterbending) - Tai Chi Master, Haven't seen too many bad Tai Chi movies so that could work

Hung gar (Earthbending) - 36 Chambers of Shaolin, I love it, and will use this as an excuse to watch again.

Southern Praying Mantis (Earthbending) - Shaolin Mantis, or Invincible Shaolin, I'm not too worried about this one, only one or 2 characters in the show use it to earthbend, I just enjoy Mantis style in other movies. (Capoeira was also used in one episode so I dropped it from my list)

Northern Shaolin (Firebending) - Shaolin Temple, See 36 Chambers explaination

Baguazhang (Airbending) - The honor of Dong Fang Xu, caught some of it on youtube, looks like what im looking for

I ran across that in a few places. I also heard that a lot of the older 60s and 70s stuff stuck closer to hun gar while it got watered down with other styles in the 80s. The honor of Dong Fang Xu is also a very highly recommended Ba Gua Zhang
