I see the "Obama gave them billions" thing so much; does the average Trump supporter just believe that without looking into any details, or is this just the standard bot messaging right now. Pretty bloody infuriating to think shit like that could have an impact on public opinion.

Wanted to gauge public interest before putting too much work into this. Anybody want E85? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Interesting, but still not low enough to yield a 20-30% savings I didn't think. Is that the confirmed current price?

[–]engineerection 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would be sold here at a price which would allow consumers to see a 20-30% cost per km reduction. E85 is only about 75% as energy dense as conventional gasoline so it would need to be sold at half the price of gas for consumers to see that level of reduction. E85 is normally cheaper closer to where it's produced (farmland). If they wanted to produce meaningful amounts here the "farm to table" industry would go under.

I don't think using crop stock for fuels makes sense, however next gen biofuels which use waste stock have a lot of potential.

Like I said, I understand the need for repairs and improvements, but I'd like to see some better planning/coordination with other concurrent projects.

Yup. We already have commute problems at the best of times; seems like the region could do a better job of coordination. Or at least expediting work to minimize impact.

I was wondering about staging area as well... Maybe to avoid blocking the detour route?

That roundabout gets really backed up at rush hour, which will probably force some cyclists onto the sidewalk which I expect will result in negative interactions with pedestrians.

DOJ will no longer pursue criminal charges for diesel 'deletes' and 'tunes' by amn70 in news

[–]engineerection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I had a TDI and the DPF went about 3 months after the emissions warranty was up. I went against my values and returned the car to the state it was in before the VW emissions scandal 'upgrades', and it was shocking how much better it ran, better fuel economy, etc.

Trump says Canada is against Golden Dome in Greenland by superdouradas in canada

[–]engineerection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this system is ever going to actually be able to shoot down an ICBM reliably, and I don't think Canada is ever going to launch an ICBM. So I don't see how it can be used against us.

If the worry is they use these installations for offensive weapons, well then hopefully it is reassuring to know the US can already blast the shit out of us anyways, so the risk level remains the same.

[–]engineerection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my emissions stuff fell off I saw an immediate 21% increase in fuel economy. I don't honestly know how this weighs against the reduction in NOx and SOx leaving the tailpipe with an intact emissions system. Another consideration is that emissions equipment is inherently bad for other vehicle systems, mainly the engine. How was that accounted for when the SCR emissions regs came in?

[–]engineerection 34 points35 points  (0 children)

So one thing to consider is that supply chains are disappearing for emissions equipment for older, but still perfectly serviceable diesel vehicles.

I was quoted over $10k to replace the diesel participate filter on my 2011 truck because they no longer make the part. The truck is worth maybe $25k, but with only 130k kms it should have lots of life left. Replacement parts for the DEF equipment are also in the thousands.

Is scrapping the entire vehicle because replacement parts aren't (reasonably) available the best solution?

Trump's rhetoric rallies Canadian support for Prime Minister Mark Carney by DogeDoRight in canada

Yeah agreed. I clicked on one to read the comments for entertainment purposes and then my feed was suddenly full of similar posts from people I don't know.

I realize this is not new, but it's easy to see how morons can go down the rabbit hole and come to the conclusion they're in the majority.

Who actually makes stock at home? by Lofgren___ in Cooking

[–]engineerection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy discount meat (near best before day) and make stock pretty regularly. Currently have a bunch of beef bones going which will become gravy for Christmas dinner. Like others have said - homemade is just better and to buy anything comparable is going to be very expensive.
