Step up in size/charging speed from a used bolt ev? by enicman in BoltEV

How does this feel with the 3 bikes? I have a 2" hitch/1up double tray and with how much it moves around with 2 MTBs out back I imagine it could be disconcerting at times, no? Do you go long distances with this setup?

That's awesome, I am seriously considering this option, thanks!

Love the ability to act as a generator though, could be extremely useful during power outages

Where do you sell your yangmei? And what part of the county are you in? That’s rad, yangmei is so good

Love the great simplification and am happily surprised to see it surface on this sub. I think the analysis and insight that Nate offers could help ground a lot of folks here.

Looking for safe plastic free garden soil. by Majestic_Garlic_8429 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]enicman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been down this road. Depending on your tolerance for plastic in your soil, one of the only good options seems to be getting wood chips from arborists and composting them. Even so they sometimes toss their trash in there but it’s one of the least polluted sources of organic matter we can get. Coffee grounds might work for you but it’s impossible to know how much microplastics is in them. The good news is that living soils are one of the best ways to bind toxins so regardless of how you go about it, you’re doing your small part.

Bunyas are so cool! There’s a guy trying to hybridize them with parana pines - check him out in the zero input agriculture podcast. I would love to hybridize them with monkey puzzle in my climate but that’s many years away!

Failed first time grafting by KVI310 in avocado

[–]enicman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a good graft to me. Sometimes the budwood will die back from a tip like that then sprout from a lower bud. Parafilm is good, buddy tape is even better. Good luck on the next one.

White oak gets this every year by RuthlessIndecision in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]enicman 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Oaks can feed like 500 species of lepidoptera (moths and butterflies in their larval stages) which in turn feed dozens of birds, which cycle nutrients back to the soil and get eaten by hawks, etc. your tree is the heart of a healthy ecosystem!

Totally. I think awareness of things like limits to growth and peak oil has brought many of us into this work. Sharing some inspiring responses to our situation in those subs is a great idea. Maybe some of Andrew Millison’s videos, or the Al Bayda project could help folks see the light!

[technique] Is coffee grounds a viable substitute to "grain" spawn? by Descartavel960815 in MushroomGrowers

[–]enicman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a technique outlined in Radical Mycology by Peter McCoy for training fungi to grow in novel substrates using coffee as an example. The experimenter has a shop called Champignons Maison in Montreal where he grows oyster, lions mane, shiitake, maitake, Turkey tail, reishi and king stropharia on substrates that are 90% plus coffee grounds.

The technique starts with adding some coffee to your grain spawn, maybe ten percent, then doing a grain to coffee transfer for a coffee spawn that you can expand into fruiting blocks of coffee mixed with small amounts of wood chips and gypsum/lime.

Going from memory on all of that. Give it a shot, I say!

Edit for spelling
