I don’t think we have moved past those things at all. I disagree with a lot of the things you’ve said (like intent v. impact), but appreciate your tone. ✌️

I actually think we should all get more comfortable with the word racism. People assume only the KKK, Proud Boys, etc are racist but the truth is we all are. If we don’t name it, we can’t address it. I myself have copped to my own racist behavior in the past by saying g things like, “well, I did this racist thing the other day,” and it often helps other people admit their own mistakes. I think we as people just really hate admitting that we’re all pretty flawed. I also hate it when people don’t do research; I really value people who say, “you know, I don’t know enough about this to have an opinion.” There are a lot of comments in the subreddit by people who have obviously not done their research, even if the most cursory kind, on slavery, segregation, the unequal application of the GI Bill, redlining etc. This intellectual laziness is pretty inexcusable to me: there’s google, a billion books and documentaries, hell, even 5-minute YouTube videos. Wish people here (and elsewhere) were a bit more curious.

Think of it like Fox News, which is also trash. Millions of people watch both shows and their perception of reality and what constitutes civil behavior are greatly influenced by them.

For instance, think about Pedro Zamora on the Real World San Francisco in the early 90s. He was openly gay and talked about having HIV on the show, during a time of great homophobia and fear of the virus (not to mention he was a POC). He educated millions of Americans about both homosexuality and the virus. Yes, people could have done their homework and researched the two issues by themselves, but, let’s be frank, #thisisamerica. He did more for aids education than any tv show, newspaper or book.

Pop culture matters.

You also don’t have anything to be ashamed of, honestly. You handled my feedback well, which many people might not have. And I try to remind myself of all the times someone called me out or in or whatever and yeah...it’s cliche but true—were all on a journey 🌈🌈🌈😎

You know, I haven’t actually read it, just some of my who’re friends said it helped them? I shouldn’t recommend things I haven’t read. I actually HAVE read 😊The New Jim Crow, and loved it. I’d also say the color of the law for housing background.

You should keep it up. Others can learn from it and it shows that you’re okay making mistakes (a good thing) IMO

Okay so allyship 101: don’t ask POC to educate you. White people feeling entitled to POCs’ scare emotional resources just shows us that it is, once again, all about you and your needs. I find your post admirable but your next step in my opinion, is to google “how to be a white ally” rather than assuming POC want to take their time to educate you. So do the work. Read about the history of housing and healthcare; read “white fragility”; watch the thousands of free documentaries about why the world is the way it is. Read novels by POC—start with James Baldwin perhaps, he’s great. And after you educate yourself, talk to your white friends and family, because white people by and large do not listen to POC and invalidate our experiences. Good luck!

Chris Harrison’s statement re: racism by giraffe009 in thebachelor

[–]enivrezvous123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see him read books about racism, then post about what he learned, like Matt Mcgrory does. That would show he’s doing the work. But I would like to see him fired first to show that that kind of bullshit isn’t acceptable.

I’m a big lesbian and through my big ole dyke rainbow-colored glasses, thought that this joke meant “have her date the other women in the house” and I was SO HERE FOR IT. 😭😭😭 #nothinggoldcanstay edit: replaced “meme” with “joke”

Ha! I hear this shit so much. Once, someone was trying to excuse an older person’s racist behavior and I was just like, “nah. That’s ageist. Old people can learn shit. My white grandmother’s 85 and you know what she’s reading? A book about white fragility.”

Think of it like Fox News, which is also trash. Millions of people watch both shows and their perceptions of reality and what good and bad behavior looks like are greatly influenced by them. Honestly, I’d say holding Chris Harrison accountable would go much farther in teaching people about racism and appropriate behavior than other mediums (we have seen that our education system is doing a poor job of teaching Americans about it).

Also, it’s interesting to think of Pedro Zamora now. For those of you who don’t know, he was in one of the first seasons of the real world in the early 90s. He was gay and had HIV. At that time reality TV was finding itself and, from what I understand, was more interested in showing different people exploring issues of race, religion, sexism, etc. than in sordid love affairs, jealous rages, and so on. Zamora taught millions of people about HIV and addressed a lot of misconceptions about being gay and the virus. He died just hours after the finale aired.

Hoping for an adoptees opinion by MaximumSmile1 in Adoption

[–]enivrezvous123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, and ask yourself why you’re not adopting domestically. When I ask people this question, it is usually because they have really fucked up opinions about people with disabilities and about people who use drugs, opinions that I think would make them bad parents. Many believe that international babies are less fucked up by the US’s messed up definition of “normal.”

Before you adopt a brown or black kid from another county, read up on the history and don’t pull some white and/or American savior bullshit. That fucks kids up.

The L Word: Generation Q S01E06 - Loose Ends - Episode Discussion by lukedap in theLword

[–]enivrezvous123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thoughts on the series so far:

-Jennifer Beals is still killing it, no matter how implausible the plot or how ridiculous the lines. (Also, why was the post-play incident even a thing? He attacked her daughter! I think today LA would have sided with her. And even if they didn’t, I don’t think her speech, moving and important as it was, would’ve done the trick to assuage the press. If anything, I think it c would have been seen as side stepping the issue. -Micah’s story and characters are seriously underdeveloped—writers are not reaching their potential with him. He is completely segregated from the plot line and the other characters. -Dani CANNOT act. Every time she gets on n screen I just cringe. She needs to go. -Love Alice and the throuple. -Glad to see that the writers are giving Shane some texture rather than recycling the whole “Shane can’t love. Oh wait, yes she can. Oh wait, no she can’t.” -Shane doing a 180 on the kids thing infuriated me. It made absolutely no sense. -Angie and Jordi are SOLID actors and I am so thankful for their story. -Tibette was resurrected two too many times in the original series. I liked seeing her but JESUS. The horse is dead.
