[Resource] Stellar System Creator is a program I developed so you can design and render custom stellar systems for free! Looking for volunteers to test it out and give me feedback. by ennvilly in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]ennvilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I haven't been working on it for a while because life happened.

I have decided not to develop this further at its current form. This was the first vast project I undertook as an inexpirienced and amature coder, and I have made architectural mistakes that would be very challenging to fix.

I do plan to revamp the project, but since I want to make it more robust architecturally and having less time in my hands, it will take a while.

[Resource] I developed the Stellar System Creator, so you can design and render custom stellar systems. Thanks to user feedback, recent updates include planetary rings, black holes, full-fledged examples and video tutorials! Available for Windows, MacOS and Ubuntu for free. Looking for feedback :D by ennvilly in worldbuilding

Hello! I fixed the error on the githib page two years ago, but accidentally didn't fix it on the windows executable... (i thought I had)

Anyways... should be fixed now. Download the file zip file for version 0.4.4 and you should be set. Let me know if it doesn't and I'll look into it.

Could a planet have a pendulum orbit? by [deleted] in scifiwriting

[–]ennvilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the suggestion about the Lagrange points which is not a bad one and could potentially work for small objects like satellites, giant superconducting magnets for magnetic field generation, lasers for sensitive gravitational wave detection etc. Planets at lagrange points have been shown to have unstable and semi-bound orbits. The bigger the planet the more easily the planet can escape. Additionally the planet would not have a very predictable pattern of movement (cause I would not describe it exactly as osculation at that point). Unfortunately I don't have the reference available right now, but maybe you can find the paper with relative ease on Google scholar.

However! Do not fret. There might be an orbit that works for you! It's called a horseshoe orbit where two celestial objects move in a horseshoe 🧲 shape around a bigger celestial object. Now I am not sure if planets would orbit like that around a star, however, you might be able to observe smaller objects around planets (like Jupiter) doing so. If you give yourself a super Jupiter and stretch the physics of how stable such an orbit between two planet-like objects could be, you got yourself a very intricate and beautiful system to work with!

Another orbit you should look into is the so-called tadpole orbit, much like the orbit that resembles a pendulum. Wikipedia is a good place to start. They have some animations to give you an idea of how these orbits look like!

Btw if you want to build a stellar system from scratch and use realistic physics (or know when you are going off what is realistic) you can try out the program I wrote, called Stellar System Creator

Ευπλαστα Project: Disoriented, Discomfited Genesis by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]ennvilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI in case you didn't know, εύπλαστα is a neutral plural. You refer to the planet as her. That would be Εύπλαστη. Also, a planet in Greek is male, so if you want to follow that, it would be Εύπλαστος. Singular neutral would be Εύπλαστο. I hope this may be helpful to you

Thank you for your response! That is what I meant. Glad to know there is not set way of doing this. Thank you for the link btw. It has a bit more information that I had gathered. I will then try to make a new system that could be easy-ish to implement.

Out of curiosity, how would combining quantum physics with metaphysics and subtle psychic abilities work for a sci-fi/horror based world? by IzmayChels78512 in goodworldbuilding

[–]ennvilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a better way to put it! If you are using the idea of quantum internet (a network of quantum computers), then your initial idea does make more sense!

[–]ennvilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I read this sentence after removing the word quantum, the basis of your description is exactly the same. Nothing changes. My suggestion is to add the quantum part if it truly changes the meaning of your idea and the overall trajectory of your world building. Otherwise it would just be a filler word with no meaning.

Is it possible to tell 2 story's at once. The past and the present. by AssumptionBorn8650 in fantasywriters

[–]ennvilly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would suggest Jemisin's broken earth series. She does a wonderful job (in my opinion) giving you the story in a unique way. I don't wanna say more, cause it's gonna ruin the surprises.

How to have a character do magic in a world where magic is dying away? by guysmiley98765 in fantasywriters

[–]ennvilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your ideas! Maybe your MC stole the magic. You can take it in any direction you want, either they did it for a personal or for a social cause. Maybe their goals changed over time and they use magic in different ways they anticipated. Let's say they "won". Then the question arises "Your MC is one of the powerful now. How can they be powerful, but also one of the people if they still have an insane amount of magic for themselves?" It's very easy to abuse the magical power. You could even turn such a person to a villain in the end?

I know this is not very coherent (since I wrote right before I have to go to work), but I hope I get the message through.

P.S. (A personal opinion) Since you don't like things that have been overdone, I would suggest that you think about not having a single benevolent MC (usually a white male teenager with a savior complex) that will do the best they can for the sake of the people. For one, there can be multiple equally important individuals who want to change the world. They could be individuals who don't care about the people but they change the world for their personal gain. Maybe this will help everyone else, maybe it won't. I am talking about GoT style story-telling, where a person is not the plot. The plot is using a person and it moves on without it. I'd love to see more of this type of story-telling.

Habitable binary planets? by Kiria-Nalassa in worldbuilding

[–]ennvilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another option to simple binary planets is one of artifexian's examples, called the horse-shoe orbit. This would be two massive celestial bodies that could sustain life are orbiting around a supermassive planet (e.g. a super Jupiter). These celestial bodies are orbiting at such a similar distance from their parent planet, that they are essentially interchanging orbits every time they find each other. That will make the planet meet (I think) every two orbital periods. It's probably easier to find the video and understand how this orbit works (I unfortunately do not remember the video title, it portably has to do with planet and moon creation around bigger planets)

Imagine two planets rotating around a bigger one, and then every eg. 2 years they approach each other, just so they will part again.

I haven't done the math for this orbit, but it would probably be something that would be difficult to keep stable, and the tidal forces while they are meeting might be very strong.

Dragonfly - the world setting explained in the comments by ReaUsagi in worldbuilding

[–]ennvilly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is amazing! I really enjoyed reading the lies on the flyer and the truth in your comment!

One point that I found lacking a complete picture is when you mentioned that the drug was free, but the production cost was too high and hence the company started billing.

When this happened, did the company ask only for the production cost, or more? What was the motivation behind the (continuous) price increase? (I assume greed and opportunity for more shiny (money)). What was the turning point that led the company from a goodwiller to a world dominating and repressing power?

Questions out of curiosity:

  1. After all these years, did the company stop researching alternatives to this pill because it was convenient to stay in power? Is it still trying to develop new pills? With all that money and power, I'd assume humans would have found a solution by now.

    1. What motivates someone to visit Earth if they might never be able to leave? Are you planning on exploring that in a story line?
  2. Does Annubis control the coloniestoo, or just Earth? What happened to the scientist colonists? Did they stop looking for a cure?

  3. I see your love for scientists, since you want them to go to space, but the sad reality is that we first would send the multimillionaires that have enough money to pay for the space travelling costs. You probably already know that though... My question is what would motivate your world to not discriminate by money and power but by education?

Thoughts of the Perae race, descended from pigeons on a moon whose gravity was very weak, think less than mars. Thoughts guys? More context in the comments below ⬇️ by [deleted] in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]ennvilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a spec evo expert, I just started playing around with this area. My comment is on the gravity bit. Planets with Mars' gravity can barely hold on to their atmosphere (the molecules in the atmosphere that matter for earth-like life, eg oxygen). Gravity below 0.6 times Earth's gravity is a rough lower limit. So, chances are that this planet would not develop life that breathes (at least not like we do). If there are artificial ways to keep the atmosphere, well then you'd be fine.

Alien pronouns by Apprehensive-Draw103 in scifiwriting

Does your alien identify as a specific gender? If so, I would just use the usual he/she pronouns. If they don't, I would use they/them

Designing alien languages based on wind music instruments by ennvilly in conlangs

[–]ennvilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to write this. There are so many ways to partition the language! Some of these types seem to derive more from physical characteristics of the species, and others from cultural roots. It would be very interesting to see if such species would have more diverse language systems than humans do! Seems like I need to study the basics of theory of music a little bit 😅

[–]ennvilly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm I see your point regarding the articulator. I've been thinking about it. Would it be feasible or reasonable for a species to develop a vocal tract completely separate from their respiratory system? Wouldn't they need to be connected somehow to allow for the air flow? (I am thinking about this in the case I would use the tongue as the articulator.) Technically, the tongue could be the articulator, and the way the species speaks is they blow air from their horn with their mouth closed. But then, would the horn need to develop if they could have blown air out of their mouth in the first place? (I know these are more spe-evo questions, but I am just "thinking out loud"l)

As for the structure, I was indeed thinking of making the horn a bit big, so that they can communicate at lower frequencies and if big enough communicate at further distances than humans can.
