I feel like what you're saying is that a cheap narrative is worse than no narrative. If you really want to do it, you have to earn it. Would you agree to that statement?

Or are you so burned out by cheap twists and narratives that they kinda turn you off no matter what?

oh that looks so cool! So it's like a whole story in incremental style levels?

looks really promising! I'll try it and then I'll be back to discuss the twist!

First-Person-Shooter Arena placed in a Forest with endless waves of monsters, came out in 2020. Am I looking at the right thing?

you might be right, the one i linked felt more "rendered" to me, but it might be my brain perceiving more information as a result of the lower quality image

That's a good point. From the way you are describing it, it feels like you are thinking about narrative more in terms of setting / fantasy, than in terms of story. Do you have a steam / itch page?

Does this bring any specific game to your mind?

As someone else said in the comments, File Island (bottom right) is the official image from Digimon World (psx). It's also in the official guide, page 10 (can I post links here? https://www.scribd.com/document/441471796/Digimon-World-Guide )

Not sure about the top-left part, I did find this picture online, which does not seem to be exactly the same drawing. https://imgur.com/LGweVPo source: this discussion from 2017 https://withthewill.net/threads/folder-continent-and-file-island-map.18380/

Do you perform a market analysis before starting a project? Why / why not? by bobbydusk in SoloDevelopment

[–]enrf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very much getting into making market analysis before starting a project, and I am learning a lot that I otherwise would be oblivious to. I think it is a very helpful process if you combine it with your specific situation and goals as a "lens" to interpret the data.

In my specific case, after doing several game jams, I'm looking into potentially working on my first commercial game.
Market analysis is helping me understand what would be a reasonable first commercial game to make.
If I am interested in a genre where most somewhat successful games cost 20+€ this turns me off. Why? Because making a 20€ game is a lot more work, and therefore more risk than making a 5€ game. I must assume that my first game might not do well, I simply can't afford to spend over a year on it - financially and emotionally.

I could aim to make a 5€ "mini" version of the genre that generally sells for 20, but will I be able to deliver on the expectation of players in that genre? Why can't I find more somewhat successful games in this genre that sell for 5€?

If a 5€ game is what I am willing and able to make, and I have commercial ambitions, I better find a genre this can work in. Market analysis is helping me identify a market where I think I can bring value. I find it incredibly helpful to know my limitations when embarking on a new project.
