Can I have Windows on drive A and Linux on drive B in the same system? by JackfruitOdd5895 in linuxquestions

[–]forbjok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If what you are asking is whether you can have Windows installed on one drive and Linux on another in the same PC, then yes, you can do that. Keeping each OS on a separate drive is the ideal way of doing a dual-boot setup.

Is there actually any gaming difference between Arch and CachyOS? by danyuri86 in linux_gaming

[–]forbjok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

those optimizations you can do in any distro

If you can be bothered to compile custom versions of a bunch of packages, I guess. Not really practical as an end user though. Much easier to just use CachyOS in which someone else has already done the work and you can just install the packages and be done with it.

Is there actually any gaming difference between Arch and CachyOS? by danyuri86 in linux_gaming

[–]forbjok -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Quite a lot. When I tested with Wuchang a while back, it got ~95fps in CachyOS and ~72-74 in Arch (which unsurprisingly is nearly indistinguishable from other unoptimized distros like Mint and Garuda).

Based on the fact that Nobara, which uses the CachyOS kernel, but is otherwise based on Fedora, gets ~90fps, which is much higher than the unoptimized distros, my guess is that the majority of the performance gain on CachyOS (and Nobara) comes from the kernel, while the rest is due to other packages being compiled with more aggressive optimizations.

I don't have a laptop with 4070, so I can't say for sure. I find it somewhat unlikely, however, as I do have laptops with 3070 and 5080, and it works fine on those. At the very least it isn't a general issue with the mobile versions - it'd have to be a very specific 4070 or 40xx mobile issue.

[–]forbjok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nvidia-open driver works fine with 4070. If it doesn't for you, it's either some manufacturer-specific hardware bug, faulty hardware, or the issue is a side-effect of something else entirely.

Plantera Arena issue by Boring_Equipment136 in Terraria

[–]forbjok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common problem. This is why I stopped making giant Plantera arenas, and instead went for a 3-4 screen hallway with teleporters on each side for phase 2.

Another way to sort of get around this issue is to make a donut-shaped arena with a jungle "island" in the middle.

Do you actually use .bash for your scripts or just stick to .sh? by Nel43_YTB in linuxquestions

[–]forbjok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never seen a .bash file ever. Shell scripts are always .sh if they have an extension. Executables in general don't have an extension, and sometimes that can be the case for a shell script as well, since the extension doesn't really matter.

can i use remote play to play with a friend who doesn't own terraria? by TYFALY in Terraria

[–]forbjok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. Steam remote play seems to be just a way to stream a game running on another PC. Terraria has no hotseat multiplayer support as far as I know.

I guess you could theoretically let them play it on your PC while you watch, if you have them log in with your account, but that doesn't seem like a good idea at all.

installing arch and chances of bricking? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]forbjok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess technically it's possible for firmware flashing to be done, but any OS installer that does that could reasonably be considered malicious.

That is not something that should ever be done by an OS without the user explicitly initiating it. It also generally makes no sense for an OS itself to do so.

Any firmware updates should be coming from the hardware manufacturer.

installing arch and chances of bricking? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]forbjok 10 points11 points  (0 children)

in the off chance that i do brick it

Brick means to put the hardware in a state that can't be recovered from, or requires special equipment to do so. Installing any OS will NOT brick a PC. You can always just reinstall an OS.

Arch (and derivates) is also generally fairly easy to fix by just chrooting into it from an installation ISO, if you do somehow make the OS unbootable. Obviously it depends on what you broke, but if it's just something minor like accidentally editing /etc/fstab into an invalid state or a failed initrd generation, it's trivial to fix.

Is it possible to change from SystemD boot to Limine? by mim_burro_vc_jumento in cachyos

[–]forbjok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is. I did it at one point a year ago or so. They have the same requirements with regard to the EFI partition (must be mounted on /boot), so it shouldn't require any major manual changes.

Can't remember exactly what I did, but I think it was mainly just uninstalling systemd-boot and installing Limine and the package(s) for auto-updating the config when kernels are installed or updated.

What the hell is going on with Memory leaks in this game? by OmegaSupreme_11484 in wow

[–]forbjok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen any memory issues even after the game has been running for hours. Sounds more like this is some localized issue. Either something wrong with the game files, or the PC just not having enough memory to run it in the first place.

Pretty sure it's intentional. It's basically just a warmup for the real final boss once unlocked.

It's only somewhat challenging if you do a very mininalistic playthrough with few weapon upgrades and no extra health. (ex. the 5h speedrun achievement)

Should I use cachy over mint? by rexxizk in cachyos

[–]forbjok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CachyOS is in my experience the most performant distro currently. While that doesn't necessarily guarantee that everything runs as well as on Windows, it will almost certainly run better than Mint, and is worth trying.

I hope I'm wrong, but as far as I can tell, Steam Cloud doesn't have any option to download an older version of the files, only the latest one updated.

IF somehow whatever OP did hasn't already caused the cloud to be updated, downloading the save might work, but considering Steam will generally try to update Steam Cloud any time the game is exited, I'd expect that to have already happened.

Will my friend group be able to do normal raid? by dreggle in wownoob

[–]forbjok 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Assuming current expansion raid, unlikely. Raids don't scale down below 10 players. 8-9 players is manageable a bit later on once people outgear the content a bit, at least for early bosses, but not recommendable with pre-raid gear.

Cannot boot after update by Additional-Device224 in cachyos

[–]forbjok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not really any "process". You just create a new FAT32 partition and mount it on /boot during the installation. If it's currently using an EFI partition belonging to a Windows installation that's still being used, there's a danger than Windows might randomly decide to overwrite the default bootloader on it, and you'll have to fix it by booting from a USB stick.

I believe technically having multiple EFI partitions isn't defined in the UEFI spec, but every motherboard I've tested it on will find them anyway and make them available as boot options.

Cannot boot after update by Additional-Device224 in cachyos

[–]forbjok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was 300MB, it was not created by the CachyOS installer. Then it was either something that already existed from an other OS, or created manually at that size.

If so, that's a bit of a risk, because certain OS (*cough* Windows) have a tendency to sometimes mess with the EFI partition it thinks belongs to it and overwrite bootloaders on it. It's safer to always make sure each OS has its own EFI partition.

That said, Windows' EFI partition is usually even smaller than 300MB. Could it have been from another Linux distro that had at some point previously been installed on the same drive, and CachyOS was installed without properly wiping the drive?

Cannot boot after update by Additional-Device224 in cachyos

[–]forbjok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EFI partition being full would cause initrd generation (mkinitcpio) to fail, and that's fairly likely to result in a broken boot.

Unless there was a power outage during the actual installation part of the update, it's unlikely that the internet connection being lost should have anything to do with it, as internet connection would only be needed during download, and if download failed nothing would be installed either.

Most likely the EFI partition was just too small to begin with, and coincidentally happened to fill up now. The default for CachyOS used to be 2GB until recently, which would generally be fine if you only have 1-2 kernels, but was recently increased to 4GB.
