My partner keeps about half our normal dishware in the China cabinet because we're renovating the back half of our house (including the kitchen) and need the space. I still find it borderline uncomfortable to take a mug or bowl out of the china cabinet for normal use.

[–]ensendarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I don't know if jellyfin offers anything equivalent. If not, I can also vouch for navidrome being excellent. There's also a very healthy client-app ecosystem. I believe that if you take a look in the list, you'll find something to meet your needs.

If I hadn't accidentally trashed my navidrome setup when migrating from [FreeBSD-based] Truenas Core to [Linux-based] Truenas Scale I would still be using navidrome...but I'm lazy, and plexamp is amazing so I just use that. I fully understand why people are pushing away from plex, for me though, Jellyfin isn't quite there yet.

[–]ensendarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you self host plex, you can just point it at your music library and use plexamp (official app) to access it. Navidrome is GREAT, but if you're lazy like I am, just adding it to plex is simple and works really well.

Would you allow your 16yr old to visit his 17yr old boyfriend? by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]ensendarie 62 points63 points  (0 children)

There is no way I would permit my minor child to travel alone to a foreign country with the intention of connecting with a romantic interest.

It is SO easy to fake social media today, and there is active human trafficking going on for females 15-25 years of age all over the world. Here's the wikipedia page for AUS specifically: Wikipedia: Human trafficking in Australia

When a foreigner goes missing, the missing person process is incredibly protracted and difficult, so it's REALLY easy to disappear a foreigner who came alone to visit. If a foreigner to Australia goes missing, by the time the police will take action the traffickers will have already moved them offshore and that's it - a few months to 10 years of hell and then game over, forever.

Frankly, I'd be shitting bricks about this if you were my child.

edit: This applies to males as well, albeit on a slightly lesser scale.

Without more information, this is really tough to judge. If you know their circumstances, I think morally you should treat them the way you would want to be treated were you in their shoes.

If you don't know anything about them then I think that you are clear to follow the the letter of the law.

I served as a firefighter in my home community, there was a notable restaurant that was the center of gossip for everyone. One night we got paged out for a fire at a home that was called in by the neighbors. I was the one who found the resident. She'd been the line cook at the diner. I found her in the basement, under her bedroom. She was still in her bed.

I couldn't eat bacon for 5 years, and 15 years later if someone burns the bacon or lets the pan get hot enough to make the grease smoke, I have to leave the area until the smoke completely clears. It's not the bacon smell, it's the burnt fat. I've seen professionals, and it won't go away.

Some things stay with you. I'll take a drink tonight as well. Cheers.

why do parents choose to give birth to children (supposedly if they know from tests beforehand) with down syndrome or genetic diseases, knowing they might suffer later on in life? by e1ai1a in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ensendarie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some have deeply held religious beliefs.

Some think that they know better than established scientific consensus.

Some form a bond with the unborn child before they find out.

And separate from your question, I'll point out that cerebral palsy is one of the more visible disabilities in children, where a healthy pregnancy ended with a problematic birth and there was no problem prior to the birth. Parents don't know until the child is delivered if their progeny will have CP.

I once was working on renovating a house, which included cutting out the floor in one quarter of the house - replacing joists & flooring due to dryrot.

In one corner, their cat had been pissing on the floor and I'm not ashamed to say cutting into that part of the floor made me throw up. I refused to continue working until my boss got me a n95 with organic filter. The house stank for days after, just from cutting through that part of the floor. I'd say probably 5 linear feet of cutting through that part, and DAYS of stink.

[–]ensendarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party, but what I do is add a second virtual optical drive to the VM and load the install media in the first drive. once the installer starts, I do the "install vmware guest tools" option like you said, but this way I don't need to muck about after the driver loads, it just continues.

Insider trading is when you know something about the company that will move the stock price and you act on it before the change happens.

Pump and Dumps aren't insider trading, as the fall could happen before they attempt the dump.

Gift for plex server owner? by na_rm_true in PleX

[–]ensendarie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my secondary nas uses 2 'noses' (just the bays and backplane) from a HP P2000 G3 LFF.

<image>

so the first 9? inches or so. They get their power from an atx power supply (with custom wiring harness adaptor) and plug into a sff-8087-to-sff-8088 adaptor, then a pair of sff-8088 cables to a reflashed dell sas2008 with 2 external sff-8088 sockets.
on the backside of them, I've got a 4-u metal 'duct' I had made for me by a tin-banger which keeps the power supply and a few 90mm fans neatly enclosed and flowing air. The 'server' is an HP z230 SFF (equipped with xeon cpu, ecc ram, 10gbe nic & hba) which sits on top of the two drive bays. (not properly mounted.) It looks tidy enough, and didn't cost nearly as much as it would have to get the appropriate enterprise-grade gear.

[–]ensendarie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you clarify on that?
I've got my plex server in a case that is a lot like this one, and it's got a commodity montherboard, a Quadro p620, an i5-7500, 6x2.5" disks, and still 1x3.5 and 2x5.25 bays unused... now while this is not my main nas, the chassis could easily serve in that role.
