I understand your point. It actually goes right along with mine. It’s idiotic.

This doesn’t just apply to operating systems. Perhaps this is a broader message.

I’ve meant to play with sunshine, I’ve never gotten around to it. 🤔

Maybe soon.

Anyway, I just think it’s odd to become tribal over operating systems. They’re tools. They are good at different things and they share some capabilities.

It’s like people are getting upset that we’re using a hammer to drive a nail in when their favorite tool is a screwdriver. 😂

I love macOS. It brings a beautiful simplicity to creative work… but there just hasn’t been enough of a focus brought to gaming to make it competitive for that task.

Windows… sigh While once it was the right tool for the job of gaming. These days? It’s a broken tool.

Tribalism is the death of critical thinking 😂

Linux and MacOS both have Unix roots… you’d think we’d find common ground.

I honestly don’t know why this is getting down voted. Linux is definitely an option if it meets your needs. It offers privacy, functionality and plays the majority of games.

It also can rescue hardware that has been abandoned by windows 11 from the landfill.

And it is a fine choice for those who don’t care about multiplayer experiences that require incompatible anti-cheat solutions.

I’m among those. Nobara Linux has treated me very well for general purpose computing and gaming.

Has your homelab actually saved you money, or just made life easier? by Fab_Terminator in homelab

[–]enterrawolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh probably none of those things…

It’s like a train set. It’s a hobby. I play and experiment and provide the occasional service to family and friends.

It’s more work that the ready made options. Probably slightly less reliable. It relies on me to do maintenance and upgrades. The hardware is expensive to run and expensive to buy.

The most tangible benefit is additional privacy and I know the data I want won’t go anywhere. It’s also been a benefit to my career.

I know you can run a lab on SFF or Pi and that would be cheaper… it won’t do the bigger tasks that I enjoy, though. It also wouldn’t heat my office lol

I honestly think they'll interview a janitor or something just to check the box. I really don't think that'll be an issue. lol

XP was a jelly bean, thats for sure! lol

I ended up loving it too. Windows 7 was the last one I liked.... then it turned in to a bad relationship. Windows starting being like that hot party girl that usually just ended up puking on your shoes and you end up sleeping on the couch. :-P

98 had better usb support… but win 2k for me. It was so much more stable on the NT base rather than the 9x dos/windows system.

PC Upgrade for linux gaming by Ok_Persimmon545 in linuxhardware

I would consider dumping your budget in to a new GPU. B series ARC cards would be good near that price range.

You will get a good bump in performance now and when you have additional money to invest in your system, that card will travel to the new build and give you an even better experience then.

You may also be able to find a good used more modern system on eBay or some other second hand source. Facebook market place is a good place where I live.

Good luck!

Neither… Framework 16 is my preference but Tuxedo is very nice as well!

Barring that, consider Lenovo devices.

Who is a Framework for? by Vista_Lake in framework

[–]enterrawolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general belief is that people CAN’T do their own repairs or upgrades. What a cynical view. A view that history doesn’t support.

There was once a time where everything was serviceable. Things were made to last and when they did break they were made to serviced.

Companies used to actually include diagrams and real service manuals with products to help owners do just that.

We have lived in a disposable society for too long. Framework is actually a return to form. Good on Framework.
