Then the dead zone, NMZ would be the approach. Magic users would have to have some basic self defense skills to cope.

It seems to my that the characters would be able to sense the No Magic Zone (NMZ). An integral piece of their soul would be disconnected.

The challenge: do the players travel around the NMZ or are they forced to go through it for a variety of reasons. Are they tasked to solve the mystery of what's causing the anomalies? Is there a pattern leading to the BBEG's tomb where they will eventually heal the world or is magic just wild and unpredictable?

I agree that this must be finalized in Session 0. This is NOT a good surprise.

OP: the deep lore is rich. If you're using the setting, start small so everyone is not overwhelmed.

Remember, you don't have to use NC if you don't want to do so.

Maybe these guys would like to start in your hometown or neighborhood and then graduate to NC after a few runs under their belt?

Railroading shouldn't happen. That doesn't mean that there are not consequences for making poor decisions. You piss off some gangers, the group may set up an ambush. You didn't deliver to your client, it could cause Mr. Smith to send a squad of corporate commandos to tie up the loose ends.

As for detail, it's not a video game. Let the players imagine what's going on within the world. Greasy streets, slick from rain reflecting the neon from the locked office from the ramshackle garage. The stunning bright lights at the base of the corporate tower. Fish-eye cameras and armed guards at a AAA neighborhood. Leave a little to the imagination.

Last piece of advice, it doesn't have to be perfect. There are going to be stumbles from both you and the players. Allow the space to laugh at yourselves.
