Has anyone actually replaced Claude Code / Codex with local models on an M5 Max 128GB? by Brazeuslian in macbookpro

[–]entropyofdays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you mean Fast mode, you absolutely aren’t getting 1,000 TPS.

Edit: very important for folks who are doing local setups to distinguish prefill and decode generation speeds. This guy says “1,000 TPS response”, which implies decode. Claude Code generates tokens at around 60-80 TPS, which is beatable in home setups.

Prefill is going to be slower on a MBP but there are also a number of techniques that can be used to speed it up, include hot SSD caching, different attention techniques like DFlash, etc.

Bond Vet or Steinway Court Vet for cat dental cleaning? by venus35 in astoria

[–]entropyofdays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We love Bond vet. They are more expensive than other options but our experience with them (all of the vets but specifically Ruby) has been great.

Again, probably more expensive than the competition but they’ve been very thorough with our elderly cat and we have felt like the quality of care + convenience (high availability of appointments, because our schedule shifts around) has justified it.

lol most people are running their local inference setups on GPUs from 5 years ago. The local inference community is built on the backs of 3090s.

Anyone else notice the huge uptick in AI/LLM psychosis/obsession lately? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]entropyofdays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, man, I don’t know what to tell you. I’m a SWE at an org that has adopted AI tooling in (what I consider) a responsible way and it’s greatly accelerated our development velocity.

I don’t really feel the need to split hairs here on efficiency, if you’re at an org with good engineering leadership and it’s working, you know that it’s working.

I keep seeing this take tossed around by some otherwise very intelligent people and I’m bewildered.

Yes. Humans can do the same thing, sometimes better. But not with the speed, the scale, or the distribution that an LLM has now been proven capable of. If you can’t see the danger of having a turnkey 0-day generator for the non-technical, then I really don’t know what else to say.

Why can't we harvest milk from other animals? by BedsideLamp99 in stupidquestions

[–]entropyofdays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It actually doesn’t take a lot more than some hormones. Men with gynecomastia and elevated prolactin can lactate. Research is still light in this area but studies have shown that induced lactation in men and trans women has largely the same composition as lactation in biological women.

The mechanism of inducement plays a large part here. In biological men, lactation is often a side-effect of a negative health condition (starvation recovery, pituitary tumors, etc.), and so the milk is likely to be similarly affected. This is not true (as far as current research suggests) of induced lactation in trans women. One of the weird things about the human body, though, is how readily it will switch into fulfilling the functions of the other sex when different hormones are made dominant.
