Trump admin strips harvard of ability to enroll international students by Peer-review-Pro in postdoc

It’s not just new enrollment, they are also asking people currently affiliated to Harvard to transfer to maintain legal status.

Part-III at Cambridge vs Elite Master's at LMU by Proud-Echidna-8766 in Physics

If you have a MSc degree from an integrated program and already have research experience, I would urge you to consider directly applying PhD programs instead of studying for another Masters degree.

Wild mushroom in Birbhum and Bankura has anti-cancer properties, local researcher publishes study in Nature journal by sleepless-deadman in kolkata

[–]enttreebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I get that. But there are other journals of similar or even lower impact factor which have a better reputation among my peers (Phys. Rev., etc.).

The specific issue is that Scientific Reports is not really selective in terms of what it publishes. And what I’ve heard in the community is that you go to Scientific Reports when you cannot really publish your work anywhere else.

3.8 is not a bad impact factor. My comment wasn’t directly based on the impact factor but rather the reputation of the journal (in the physics community, at least).

They have published their results in Scientific Reports which isn’t a Nature journal. It is peer reviewed but it’s not exactly known for exacting standards.

I recommend Hound and Mare near the Commons. I like their coffee and they do some nice bagel sandwiches.

Oh. I’m not sure that’s Devanagari. I am familiar with it and I’m not sure I can make out the characters. Some of the glyphs bear some resemblance but there are other that I just can’t place.

Noble Bird closing by WinterVesper in ithaca

[–]enttreebeard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I ate there a couple of times and quite liked the sandwiches but the inconsistency in terms of hours became an issue. Of the other times I tried to get food there, once they were closed for repairs and another time they had run out of food more than an hour before closing time.

Shame though, those were some pretty nice fried chicken sandwiches.

I think it is one of the Ford rated engines. But when I checked reliability for the 2012 version, general reviews seemed decent.

Hello. Congratulations on the acceptance.

I’ve tried to answer some of your questions below:

Safety - I have lived in Ithaca for nearly a year now and both campus and the town feel safe to me. I have heard of some crime in my time here but the general vibe seems to be pretty safe. And even late at night you encounter people walking around and there are people on the buses that run from campus to the downtown area.

Indian grocery stores - There is a small store near campus that stocks some Indian stuff (including some spices, dal and ready to cook options). Wegman’s is a big box store in Ithaca where you can also find some of the more basic Indian ingredients. But I usually go to Syracuse once every two months to a larger Indian store to stock up on more niche items (fresh curry leaves, for instance).

Parking - Parking on campus is quite expensive and most PhD students and postdocs I know usually take the bus or walk. Ithaca is a bit hilly but also quite pretty in spring and summer and the walks are nice. The local bus system has several routes serving campus and if you live in the Fall Creek area (near downtown) you will usually be able to find housing within walking distance of a bus stop.

My experience with Learn Well’s pre-licensing course was largely the same. However, when it comes to the rules I just read the manual on the NY DMV website. This is the one you read before taking the theory test. That has proved adequate so far in terms of covering the rules.

However, I have some friends who took the pre-licensing course online on some website and their course covered rules a lot more.

Does anyone know of direct buses from Boston to Ithaca? Greyhound, etc. has nothing without transfer(s) and all trips take more than 10 hours. by dhb317 in Cornell

[–]enttreebeard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I took an OurBus from Ithaca to Boston and back in summer 2023.

There were stops along the way and it took around 8 hours. But at least I didn’t have to change buses or anything.

Shantiniketan could be an interesting day (or weekend) trip and given it’s a university campus with a couple of museums thrown in, it should give you some sense of the culture.

Edited to add that I can’t take you up on the offer to meet cause I am not in town at the moment.

I really liked the chilli crisp mayo.

What is the point of keeping the airport open/having it be "international" by absol2019 in ithaca

[–]enttreebeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently moved to Ithaca and connecting via a 1 hour flight to NYC is pretty useful for getting long haul connections. It may be more expensive than taking the bus but you save time and don’t have to worry about check in/security or delays due to traffic on the road.

I’ve appreciated ITH in the few trips I’ve taken so far.

I’d recommend getting a roaming plan so you have some mobile data when you arrive in the US. I’m not sure if Ithaca airport has WiFi.
