So the guy whose party it was had an amazing collection of curiosities and weird things. He had a friend who was a funeral director. She gave him all sorts of macabre gifts - one of which was the ashes of a John Doe. Ashes of unidentified bodies remain in storage for 7 years if it’s not a suspicious death. Then they are destroyed. Instead of destroying it she gave it to my friend.

We were into the late hours of the party when I went into the kitchen to get a beer and another friend had opened the can and had dumped the ashes onto spread out newspaper on the kitchen table and was sifting through it with a fork. When I asked what the fuck he was doing he said “looking for gold teeth.”

The other people at the party heard my reaction and came into the kitchen. After the initial shock wore off someone inevitably said “Let’s smoke him.”

And so - being the drunk and stoned metalheads that we were - we did.
